Jumpmasters 1B: Power is Knowledge (Vanilla, GOTM mod - Emperor - No research)

The ship chaining went fine. Our production rate is not up to our transport capacity, though, so we have galleys sitting in the chain idle.
@Dianthus, as you say the steady state rate of delivery, in your terms, is equal whether you use it or not. However, it's not a steady state process. It starts when you decide to move troops in a particular direction, and ends when you delivered enough to complete the job in hand. Since ship chaining gets troops there faster, the total troop delivered in a given period is greater. In Republic we need our wars to finish in the mnimum number of turns, and getting troops to the front earlier helps.

I've played 6 turns, Chosogabe was no more on turn 4, and we now have 20 Bagatur Hordes plus some Khorchin and Turghaut Cav sitting on the Tokugawa border, all healed and fit, waiting for their next battle orders. Toku is the next in line, as all the other options involve sea journeys again. My only hesitation is that we are up against Samurai - 4.4.2. We can engage them with our superior range plus bombard capability, but I thought I'd better check back on whether there's a master plan I've missed before I commit us.

OK, just a sanity check. I'm going back in :D :hammer:

Mongol is Power

Here's the save at 650AD. I'll post the write-up tomorrow, as it's very late.

Chosogabe is deleted, Tokugawa has two mainland cities and some islands scattered about. We could get one of them for peace, but it's not worth it. There's a Bagatur stack on a mountain that can take out his last two mainland cities next turn.

I haven't moved all the units, as it's decision time as to where we go next. I guess either Kwariszmia or India? I've started breaking up the ship chain that I used for the first phase, and some units are already on the move south.

I suggest we have a look at the save and decide where we'd like to go next.

I got a leader and built an army - nothing else available. I used Khorchins. The bad news about armies is they lose the ability to bombard. But I was able to take out two defenders in one turn in a straight fight.

go to bed Alan - It's got to be what 5 am where your at when you posted? That's dedication. I'll look at the save tonight and check in tomorrow.

Edit: Ok I got excited and looked at it before I went to bed.

Quick thoughts on our wonderful situation.

#1. Wow!!
#2. Wow again. This game has really changed since I've last seen it. And that wasn't that long ago.
#3. We could build the Hero Epic right now. I think in Beijing it would take 8 turns.
#4. WW is not bad 20%
#5. I think that Ghandi should be next on the hit parade for 2 reasons. One, the galleys are on the NW side of the ex-Tokugawan Island and could swing around to the Rajaputani lands pretty quickly. Currently Rajaputani have no saltpeter. so that means no War Elephants right? I've had my recent share of being beat-up by those things.
#6. Alan You might have to explain where some of your galleys are headed. Looking at the save it is not easily apparent.
#7 Can we rush a harbor in one of the old Tokugawan cities to bring the wines back to the mainland for happiness?
#8 I'm afraid that Tokugawan may have some one tile islands or somthing because they still show that they still have 5 cities left. I found three. two that we are about to take and one little island to the E of where we are at, towards where the Minoans are. You can Just see the "wan" at the end of the name out of the fog.
#9. We have 20 cities that will riot if the lux slider or MM'ing is not done preturn.

Questions:
#1. Do I remember correctly that One of our UU's can settle cities? Which one is that?
#2. Why are we leaving Russia unmolested? (not that I think I'd personally want to molest Kathy) They are only 5 tiles away from our homeland.
#3 Is it worth while to rush some happiness buildings in the homeland or set-up a city to build Bach's? We do have over 6K in bankroll and are making 650+ per turn.

Thats it. I'm Going to bed now.
Have fun with this one Gator, leave me some :hammer: 'ing to do when it's my turn.
Did I Mention WOW?
WOW.jpg

I think Rajaputana is our next target as well..

I'm not sure why we went for the southern land masses before Russia, except there looks to be much more land in that direction than east. We have inherited several harbours in Chosogabe and Tokugawa, but we are separated by ocean tiles, so there's no trade between our territories yet. Yes, it's a pain. The only tradeable luxuries are in Russia, and we are buying them already. I've built some markets in core cities, both to help with happiness and to build the gpt for when our GA ends.

The WW for Tokugawa has only just set in this turn and I didn't do an F1 review before I saved the game. I haven't bothered to try to reduce WW by keeping troops out of enemy territory, as it only lasts for a turn or two at high slider level and then you can make peace or destroy them.

Tokugawa have Lida and Shizuoka which we'll take next turn, and two other visible islands - neither is one tile. Kumano is north of the peninsula, in the middle of the fully explored ocean, the other is the one you can see part of, far to the south west. I'm guessing that's Ida as it's a poor little city on tundra. You can just see some more land to the south of the town, so it's not a single tile. I don't know where the other city (Owase?) is. We can get Ida in a peace deal now, and it will probably still be available after we've taken Lida and Shizuoka. I have sent some galleys to the north of the peninsula, and I suggest we use them to transport some troops to take out Kumano, which may become their next capital.

There are two settlers in old Chosogabe. One is on his way to infill the gap where the workers are active, I thought the other could fill a space either between the old Choso cities or in the east where there's a biggish gap.

Most of the galleys are still where they were during the ship chaining. There's a stack south of our homeland and two stacks to the south east. These need to move west towards Rajaputana now. Other galleys are filling the map as fast as possible. I wanted a good world map for trading purposes when Navigation arrives.

I'll post a turn log later this morning. Gotta run !!!

Hey I pm'd Grunthex to find out if he would be able to play, so hopefully we will hear something from him. He hasn't posted hear in a while but he has been online at CFC.

If he can't play, how about switching Mistfit and my spots. I know Mistfit was looking for some game time this weekend and I just put him up in SGOTM3 as well. Our team actually posted 2 turnsets yesterday.

Very cool progress! I love the hordes of hordes.

AlanH said:

@AlanH, I was wondering if you would have done this differently. I set up a whole pile of galleys for one big rush over, so there certainly wasn't enough production to keep feeding the chain steadily. Would it have been better to build fewer galleys, or wait until production was higher? Just trying to learn!

Re: Russia, at the time it looked like Russia had an awful lot of mountainous terrain, which I thought would remove some of the advantage of our horse-based units. Also, the Choso/Toku/Raja lands to the south appeared to be linked up, or close to, with lots of open fields. The combination of the open land and multiple targets available made South seem like the juiciest target. Also, we would have had Incense if Ulsan hadn't flipped.

No objection here to going back for Russia at some point, but I agree that momentum is pointing towards Raja.

Good luck Grunthex or Mistfit!

I've just posted my save to the SGOTM I will not be playing again until tomorrow evening but either way is cool with me I'll check in early tomorrow morning.

Right now after the beating I've just received it is time for

The galleys are fine, we are going to need lots, even more now that we know there's sea between us and Raja and Kwariszmia. I built some more during my set. We also need them to build a good map of the world for the map trading round, if only to avoid paying lots for the territory maps we will need to fill the black holes.

If I'd known how fast the Choso and Toku would collapse, and the fact that they aren't connected to the others, I should probably have redeployed them for the next target earlier, instead of setting up a 4-ship chain wth the ones that were there. At one point I did use three of them in one turn, but over the turn set an average of two would have been enough. That would have reduced my ship chain from (4+8+4+4) = 20 down to 10, liberating 10 galleys to start setting up a new ferry service to Rajaputana.

The decision on Russia was reasonable, though I would still recommend we consider an expeditionary force to visit Catherine real soon now. Serial wars are OK, but we probably have enough capacity to start taking out two civs at a time now. I started putting a few troops on our eastern extremity with that in view.

I was thinking of fomenting some wars, but France stirred it up quite nicely during my turns, and the Ottomans were trying to work up a head of steam against Carthage. It looks like Joan's on her GA as well, and she organised a mini-dogpile on the Vikings before making peace with them herself.

Here's my turn log (a precis of a 12-page manuscript  )

Turn 180 550 AD Preflight
F1 review - note we have several entertainers. Switch them to tax or work. Starvaton diets for our captured cities. Change Totashamizu to barracks to give us a fast recovery base for our wounded.

Note that we have lots of units in captured cities. I don't like that plan, but can't do anything about the ones with no moves left. My policy is one or two, or maybe a few if they're badly wounded and there's a barracks, but flips can take more units than battles if you use big garrisons. So I move all units that I can towards the front.

A couple of warm-up battles left for me by Karasu

3/4 Horde towards Niihama to attack 4/5 horse. Bomb to 3/5 and kill -> 1/5.

Complete 1 horde, 1 khorchin, 1 galley, 1 Ordu Archer.

Turn 186 610 AD
It's too quiet for Mongols. Let's [party]!
Declare war on Tokugawa - he doesn't seem interested in our suggestion of 100gpt for a peace treaty
Gunpowder is out there. We buy it from France - she's always so reasonable, it's a pleasure doing business with the Maid of Orleans. We have Saltpeter hooked up,and more available.
Our troop advance on Shimoda and a Turghaut kills a 4/4 archer en route.

IBT
Kwariszmia allies with France vs. Vikings.
Vikings politely ask our galley captain WTH he's doing in Viking territorial waters. We agree to leave ... when we're ready, all right?
Otomo swords kill 2 Turghauts near Shimoda
3 hordes, 2 khorchin, 2 workers, 1 galley completed
New Tsetserleg completes barracks.

Le Foothold flips to the Ottomans. with one Turghaut. Surprise, surprise!

Turn 187 620 AD
@Shimodo:
An Ordu Archer misunderstands his orders and kills a 4/4 footman, redlining in the process. As a bombardment expert, he was "only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!".
Other bombarding troops redline the remaining 5/5 Otomo sword and 3/3 foot defences, destroy the brracks and reduce the pop from 7 to 6.
Two 5/5 hordes kill the defenders and take Shimodo with 5 resisters.
More bombardment and 4 more elite kills destroy other Toku troops around the city.

Pressing forward we see further troops in transit. We lose one horde to a sword in forest, and kill a samurai spear, two swords and capture a worker.

We see another city (turns out to be Fuji) and Turghauts kill one sword and damage a footman.

IBT
France signs peace with Vikings, the sly minx, having inveigled several besotted leaders into wars against the Vikings.
Meanwhile Kwarizmia and Ottomans ally against Carthage, and teh Ottomans invite us to join in. No thanks, we're making our own entertainment.
Two swords attack a horde. One dies, the other is redlined and kills.

4 hordes, 1 khorchin, 1 worker completed.
Ulaanbaatar completes market
Tes riots - I missed it growing.

@Matsusaka:
2 Hordes bomb and kill 2 footmen and take Matsusaka with barracks and 4 resisters

@Yokkachi:
Bombard pop from 7 to 6, footman -1hp, destroy barracks and temple.
1 vet horde, 1 elite horde kill defenders and take Yokkachi with 5 resisters and 2 workers.

@Fuji:
One horde dies, 2 more kill vet footmen and take Fuji with 4 resisters.

Kill assorted troops in the open and approach Hammamatsu (capital). We can see a Samurai defending. Bomb him to 2/4 to esnure he doesn't come out fighting and to see what he's sitting on top of - at least 2 footmen, so he's probably their only samurai.

Rush a settler at Takamatsu for 100 gold to infill the space between Choso and Toku.

Toku swords attack and die.

IBT
4 markets complete plus 1 galley, 1 horde, 1 turghaut, 1 settler, 1 khorchin
Namp'o riots :(

Turn 189 640 AD
@ Hammamatsu
Samurai is fully recovered, of course. Now we have major siege troops in place.
A massive bombardment reduces the pop from 8 to 4 and all the defenders are redlined.
An elite horde and a vet horde die on the 1/4 samurai - no retreat from a fast unit, of course. Next vet horde kills him and promotes to 5/5.
two more 5/5 hordes kill redlined footmen, then a 4/5 horde kills the last footman and ... we have a leader [dance]
We capture Hammamatsu with market, granary, 3 resisters

As we had a lot more business and a lot of elites I decided we'd better use our new leader fast. There were no available wonders, so I built an army and loaded it with Khorchin.

I rushed another settler to help fill the gaps in the new territories.

IBT
2 Kensai appear from Kofu, but don't attack
Tabriz riots - forgot to check F1. Playing too late!
Complete 2 markets, 3 hordes, 2 khorchin, 2 turghaut, temple, settler.
Palace gets a west wing

Turn 190 650 AD
Bomb two Kensai to redlines and 2 elites kill them.

@Kofu:
Bomb 2 defenders to redline.
Vet and elite hordes kill them to capture Kofu with 5 resisters, barracks, granary.

@Okazaki:
Army kills 2 footmen
5/5 horde kills archer and takes Okazaki with 5 resisters, barracks, granary

@Mishima:
5/5 horde kills 3/3 foot
4/4 horde retreats inflicting no damage on 3/3 foot
4/4 horde kills 3/3 foot captures Mishima with 4 resisters, barracks, harbour.

I bought an embassy in Kwarizmia to see where the next victims lie, and positioned troops to take the last two mainland Toku cities. There are three offshore Toku cities, one of which is not currently visible.

Here are some images ....

The ship chaining plan, before I actually set it up. I actually used the eastern route, and instead of starting the southern ships in harbour I found I could make a complete round trip each turn if the last ships in the chain were kept where you see them, one tile out from the town. This is due to the subtleties of the differential ship movement.

Hand Down Report:

I see 5 more cities on Rajaputan Lands we are set-up to take 2 more next turn
I totally screwed up the ship chaining process from Furland to the Ex Japanese lands. I could not get the ship transfer down. I'd wake the units in one boat that had no more movement and get to chose which boat it was going into next and it would always end up in the same boat again. So I started to transport them the old fashion way.
The galleys around the Raj land are headed E to pick up more units. Our Army wont fit on a boat it has 3 units in it. I only added 2 into our current Army. The next player can decide what to do with him.
The bombardment is cool but against the larger cities it was only working 1 out of 6 times so I gave up and started to attack.
Rush the market in Seoul after it stops rioting (how embarassing)
I've added a few workers into our 1st ring cities to make them bigger.
Banking became availabe at turn 10 I did not check around to see what we could get it for. Everyone has it.
I Busted quite a bit of the fog around so we can see the land masses we are dealing with. The Russian areas are about the last for us to see.
We own 954 of the 3845 tiles visable in the worls. I presume for domination we would need almost 3 times the area we currently have. I'm voting for Conquest. In 2 -3 turnsets the western Hemisphere will be ours! These are very fun units to play with although I'm worried about them -vs- Muskets and above.
Does the War Elephant rewuire resourses? If so we need to pillage them.

Well Thats it. Good night. Long live the Mongol Hordes!:devil2:

Well done Mistfit. Hope you enjoy a well-earned rest. It's hard work isn't it :D

Re: the ship chaining: Yes it's a pain working out which ships are the ones that still have movement points. I try to move one boat-load at a time, and wake all the units so that you can tell the difference between the ones you've relocated and the ones still to relocate. The ones you have reloaded into a ship are listed with "Wake ..." the ones that you haven't put back in boats yet are listed with "Activate ...". Use one unit and try each ship - they stay stacked in the same order in the selection list - until that unit gets into a boat that you can select that has movement points. Then move another into the same boat. With a galley you only have two units to deal with. With an 8-unit transport you have another 7 to move once you find the right boat.

I did try to think of a way to illustrate this process, but it almost needs a movie. It certainly needs patience, which is why I think it should be permitted under all rule sets :mischief:

Good turns Mistfit.

Now you're pulling in all the great leaders ;)

@ Mistfit - No problem, I've got a flexible schedule so I can play almost anytime.
