Political Parties and the Government in Arctica
The Arctican Government is unlike every other government because of one thing: a Scientific Doctorate (or proof of being a super) is required to run for any political office. Because of this, the government is very left-leaning and progressive in general. There are several political parties prominent in the Chamber of Progress (legislative body, like the Senate or Parliament), including:
Mainstream Parties:
Progressive Party:
The Progressive party, a center-left party, currently holds a slim majority in the Chamber of Progress with 33 seats (out of 63). Their policies include heavy spending on education and science, willingness to make trade agreements and some types of alliances with other nations. They are committed to military neutrality.
Internal Party:
The Internal Party, with 20 seats, has similar view on domestic policy (heavy investment in science and education) but is much more isolationist with regards to foreign policy, and prefers spending on internal improvements and development over international projects like CERN. They are committed to military and political neutrality.
Fringe Parties:
Isolationist Party:
The Isolationist Party, with 5 seats, has a very radical foreign policy outlook: complete political, military, and economic isolation and neutrality and removal from all international projects. They even support closing Arctica to outsiders and solely focusing on scientific and internal advancement.
Cold Supremacy Party:
The only truly right-wing party, and a radical party at that, the Cold Supremacy Party believes that it is Arctica's destiny to develop more advanced glaciation technology, start another Ice Age, and take over the world using Arctica's superior adaptation to cold. Unlike most parties, they are against neutrality and have no problem with making treaties with other nations, such as the Gethic Hand. Also, they insist on building up the army and making heavy investments into military technology. However, their ambitions are limited by the fact that they only have 3 seats in the Chamber of Progress.
Socialist Party:
While the Arctican constitution bans communism, the Socialist Party, with a mere 2 seats, wishes to expand the government's role in markets and desires more redistribution of wealth. Otherwise, their policies are similar to those of the Progressive Party.
