Welcome back to the stage of history. It's been a while, so I'll fill you in on the basics. The King of the World series focuses on Civ IV's various Earth maps, sacrificing the excitement of exploration for more consistent starts. We know where we're starting, we know who our neighbors are, heck, we even know where to look for goody huts. This doesn't make it any less of a game, though. It just shifts the focus a bit.

I've been away from the game for a while, and this game features a pretty massive curve ball, so we'll be dialing it back to Monarch for this entry in the series. We'll be playing as Qin Shi Huang of China on the Earth18Civs map. Now the First Emperor is normally a powerhouse on this map, and there's no reason he can't be again. Heck, this might be a cakewalk. But the map is set to Always War, with the Real Always War mod in effect. So this won't be a formulaic game of tech brokering and backstabbing unready chumps. No, the world is going to be in flames, with everyone at war with everyone else, with no quarter asked or given. So, let's take a look at our entrant for this battle royale:

Qin's Industriousness will speed up the production of Wonders and Forges. I expect that we'll be building more troops than Wonders in this game, though a few are appropriate for a military-minded leader, particularly if we live long enough to get the fighting front away from our doorstep. The Protective boost to garrison units could well save our bacon (after all, we will be starting with Pigs in our radius), and may even make defensive structures such as Walls and Castles worth considering. Protective's real boost, though, will be to our Unique Unit, the Cho-Ko-Nu, China's devastating Collateral-Damage-dealing Crossbowmen. If we can get these online, they could be a massive boost to our war machine. Our Unique Building, the Pavilion, is just a Theater with an additional Culture boost; I don't think it'll factor into our strategy until we start considering victory conditions (assuming we get that far).

So that said, let's get to it:

For the uninitiated, we're gonna have Genghis Khan to our northwest, Tokugawa to the east, and Asoka to the southwest. Of the three, Asoka is probably the biggest long-term threat, though the other two, with their aggressive tendencies, can be real thorns early. That coast to the east is an entrance to the Pacific, and it's stocked with Fish, besides, so I think settling 1E is a no-brainer (stupid 1-off-the-coast starts!). Beyond that, though, we have some decisions to make. We could send our Warrior north and crush Mongolia before they can even get a Warrior online, but that feels a bit cheap to me. Which way should our research go? Archery is obviously going to be more important here than it is in a lot of our other games, but should we consider Fishing first to grow Beijing? What should our build order be?

Oh, and in terms of map changes, I did indeed move the Inca to the coast and open up the Andes:

But I'm leaving Isabella where she starts. Europe is going to be a mess early on, and I want to see who comes out on top without any undue interference. If she's strong enough, she can get a coastal city very easily :)

So those of you who want to shadow the game, remember to check out this mod. Without it, the rest of the world will only be at war with you. And what fun would that be?

(Oh, and five points to the first person to identify my two non-Civ gaming references in there.)

Yay! New KOTW! My favourite series!
Thank you for taking always war. Although those games can have a snowball effect, other games can have that too, and now you might get some 'unexpected' events, such as Huaynas Longbow army landing on your shores in 1900 AD.

As far as I know there is no copper in your BFC. Iron is close, though.
What about a beeline to IW? Or is that stupid? You start with mining and agr, so you could already start improving. Perhaps you could do a detour to fishing.
Or will you HA rush Genghis?

Welcome Back!

I think warriorrush on Ghengis is too cheap, but, a chariotrush may be in the spirit of the King, and you need AH for them pigs anyway.

Iron takes too long to get teched for a decent rush, just my 2 pennies

Given that we're expected to know the E18 resources: Iron is on the PH NW of the start. There are horses 1N 2E. Do you need HAs at Monarch, or is a chariot rush enough to take out Ghengis? He starts with archery and probably has an archer defender by the time you research The Wheel and AH -- though those could be your first 2 techs (start with Agriculture and Mining).

Will be following with great interest. I'll forgo all advice since you're more than capable of doing the right calls yourself.

Due to it being a scenario (rather than a basic random game), the AIs' starting techs don't change based on difficulty. So it's a level playing field in that respect. Nobody starts with Archery.

It's a Battle Royale...

...with cheese! :D

1E is the best spot to settle. You still claim the fish and also have a coastal city.

Wipe out the Mongols first. Genghis has a tendency to build loads of units so best take out a big threat early on. Asoka won't be too much of a problem, but watch out for him. As for Toku, he isn't a threat until he gets sailing. When he does, though, he can be the biggest threat.

Skip fishing and bulb the cho ko nus!

With AW they'll give you mileage. Obviously must tighten defenses first. If you're not willing to rush GK with warrior, a more standard/fair attack on him before he gets iron will suffice.

hmmm... mod is only one python file. Seems you can get it to work with BUG/BULL simply by replacing the the standard .py file in the Assets folder (saving off the vanilla version, of course). I don't think the ini file would have any affect either way and can be ignored, but I'm no modder.

YAY! The series that persuaded me to actually post here is back!

I've been playing a lot of Earth18 lately, and I recently finished up a Culture-but-also-with-the-killing-of-the-guys game as Louis in which Qin basically was at war the entire game, racking up the entire old world (except Asoka, Liz, and me) as vassals. He's a beast on this map--land that rivals Europe plus no real competent rivals within spitting distance.

It's going to be interesting to see how you handle REXing in this game; China has a lot of room for it, but the mod means that the land outside your borders is particularly dangerous. Blocking Tokugawa and Genghis from getting footholds in China proper is obviously priority one. Long-term, I'm with TMIT; I've heard about the CKN beeline but haven't really been able to leverage it properly myself. They're a cool unit, but I kind of suck at using them.

Since you're not making changes to the scenario, I'm most interested to see what happens in Europe. As I recall, Germany starts with a Scout and no Warrior and can be taken out pretty easily by a determined Louis if he gets there before Berlin gets defenses up. A few others do too (I think Catherine), but Freddy's in the most precarious position with nice pretty land surrounded by opportunistic neighbors.

Should be a lot of fun!

When exactly was it that the leaderheads were swapped around? Just for BtS? Qin is still Kublai for me... :(

The current QSH leaderhead was introduced in Warlords. You must be playing vanilla.

Qin with Always War calls for a Machinery slingshot. Wipe Khan early with chariots, beeline MC, build the Oracle and voila! CKN's at ~700 BC is very attainable. Use those to destroy Toku and the game is yours.

Round 0: Hey! The King's Back!

Were you playing World of Warcraft by chance?

I remember a /silly by the Humans that parodies the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and it finishes with "Hey! The King's Back!"

Somebody made a World of Warcraft map and I played it for a bit - The Human start zone is so resource rich it is silly!

---------------

ADDIT: Here is a QSH Game I played recently with random Continents settings on Monarch level. There should be tons of examples of what not to do. I lost Liberalism and Taj Mahal. I used an Engineer to either bulb Metal Casting or Machinery and from there I built nothing but Cho-Ko-Nu Crossbows and took over the Continent.

Of course QSH on Earth18 has nothing to do with QSH on my game but I was trying to say I agree with those who are calling for early Machinery. The Cho-Ko-Late Crossbowmen synergize very well with the Protective trait.
