Right, how about a kudos system purely between members?

- each member has 1 kudos point available to them to distribute each week
- can also give one negative kudos a week.

kudos awarded between members as you choose, be it a good post, too much spam, etc etc.

With this we would be more self policing (less mod work) as people would not want to lose their kudos, and would spend more time constructing useful posts in an aim to achieve more.

system of distribution needs tweaking, but i think the idea merits discussion.

Good idea, but how will we stop people from voting based on personal opinion alone? I don't want to be negatively kudoed just because of my beliefs.

Nonetheless, it is an excellent idea to have in order to show who REALLY should be taken seriously or not at all.

Not a good idea. People would create multiple accounts just to give themselves kudo points.

Actually, simular things have happened with the thread ranking system. It's the same concept, except you get one vote. There have been numerous instances where people have had multiple accounts just to increase the rating of their thread, and/or down the threads of those they don't like.

I don't think it would be a good idea. I mean, I would love it, but I don't think it's possible, because you couldn't prevent people from voting based on the personal opinion. I am sure that if someone can call me bigot and clouded mind for exposing my ideas on history, I would get negative kudo for the smallest thing.

Edit: Crosspost with Turner.

Couldn't have written it better. In other forums that I've been to this kind of system doesn't work, simply because it's too easy to abuse and many people will abuse it if brought into use.

Well if the negative part was taken out, e.g. you couldnt go below zero. Also if it was made so you could see who gave who kudos points would stop DL's being created.

And also what kind of sad acts register more accounts just to give their thread more stars/anothers less stars?

Maybe only moral people could be allowed to vote. As soon as we can decide who is moral and who is not. ;)

Yeah, but handing out 'moral points' would be the same as 'kudos points'...

;)

Anyway, there are certainly lots of cliques here at CFC. The proposed system would never work just because of that.

Well, for one thing, if you're in the OT Civivor club you're better than everybody else...

Each user can have their own impressions of a user in their mind. No need to have a public listing.

I agree.

I've seen a Kudos system on smaller forums, where it generally works out fine, and is pretty much in the background. You can only give points, never take away, and each user can choose if they wish to switch it off or on.

Wouldn't like to think what it would be like on a forum as large as this though.

The forum does have a reputation system built in. From what I read on the official vB forum, forums that have a positive experience using the system often disallow giving negative reputation points.

Sorry, this kudos thing is a crap idea, for all the reasons people have mentioned already.

I'm here for fun, discussion and time wasting, not kudos. Besides, who wants kudos from a geeky gaming forum anyway? That's like having treasury bonds for Zimbabwe!

lol that reminds me of a quote i heard recently 'thats like being the cleverest kid with down syndrome!' think it was from 'waiting'

This is a great idea ... i would like it.
And there is a simple way of preventing getting points from less than honorable ways. Only users with 500+ posts are allowed to give points... or something like that.

And who gave what must be seen ... If the negative points bother people that much then remove them. Allow only positive ones ...

Please consider the stuff i said ... they seem reasonable, and i don't see anything faulty in my idea. :)

Treasury bonds for Zimbabwe at least can be used as gifts for inlaws...
I don't see why we need a kudos system and i don't see how it would work. Even with a clause that only spammer senior poster have to right to give kudos, there would be a kudos-trading bazar in no time at all among those who crave respect from anonymous geeks. ;)
