LINES-World of Magic

The Strategos said:
New Atlantis: Education: Enlightened +8
Atlantis: Education: Clever (3/6)
Atlantica: Education: Clever +6
Illyria: Education: Above Average (0/5)
Elgovia: Education: Average (3/4)
Sudafrika: Education: Average (3/4)

Would you like to rephrase your "most advanced nation in the world" statement? I think Illyria has been "Above Average" for a couple turns now, if he hasn't gone to the next age yet, you definately shouldn't expect it either.
Permanent "Plot" NPCs like Atlantis don't count, and everybody across the sea is an uneducated barbarian anyway! :p
At the moment, "The World" consists of Elgovia, Hyperborea, Western Hostile Barbarians, Eastern Decadent Empire, and Eastern Peaceful Barbarians. Just look at the map I posted a while back.

On a completely unrelated topic, Lord Iggy, you need to change my trade counter. Right now its

Trade: Balaeria (1/2) Ur (1/3) Illyria (0/3)

Ur and Illyria should be (2/3) and (1/3) respectively, I think that Balaeria should be (0/2) since I just got the point last turn from trade, this upcomming turn will be (1/2) and the turn after (2/2) when I get a point. I think...trade still kind of confuses me.

Told you we should have gone for super-trade. Of course you could just tack a third number... nah, I was right and I still am.

There is no 0/2 value. You only have 0 as the first number when you start a trade route.

Kentharu, you're on AIM but not answering, and your PM box is full so I can't contact you in any way. Can you please be a little more accessible?

sorry bout that, i've been out of it for a while (a little wasted to) but i just emptied my pm box and you will have to add me again, so what do you neeD?

Julius leaned on his spear. He felt his eyelids droop down. Shaking himself, he jumped up and down in place. As a soldier of Karthage, it was his duty to stay awake during his watch. Not that there was much to see. The darkness surrounded him, the only light coming from the thousands of stars spread across the sky. In front of him the small sounds of the night went on like they did every night, oblivious to his presence, or at least uncaring. Underneath him the rest of the men of Fort Carthago slept. The name itself was a bit of irony. It could hardly be called a fort by any stretch of the imagination. The most imposing structure of the “fort” was a tall outpost, a flat observation platform connected to the ground by a ladder. On it, Julius stood watch, an unlit bonfire behind him that he was to light in emergency to warn the surrounding countryside. Around the outpost huddled a few buildings, the sleeping quarters for the four other men who were stationed here.

The very fact that Julius was here proved, in his mind, that the gods either hated him or enjoyed cruel jokes. He had grown up in a small native village in the northern part of what the Karthaginians called Italium. His entire world consisted of his family’s farm and his small village. Then the Karthaginians came, building a settlement nearby they called Pisae. One day, a small group of Karthaginian soldiers stopped by Julius’ village. To Julius, used to seeing the same faces day after day, the Karthaginians were a source of fascination, resplendent in their shinning bronze armor. The gods, Julius thought, must have looked something like those Karthaginian soldiers. When they offered Julius a job in the army, to see the world, to be like them, to escape the cramped confines of his small village, he had jumped at the chance. Not even bothering to tell his family, he had left with them that very day.

When he arrived at Pisae, he was amazed. It was a small city, the Karthaginian officer had told him, barely large enough for the Karthaginian army to bother with. To Julius’ eyes however, it was a sprawling metropolis. A Karthaginian merchant would sometimes stop by his village, never more than one and never more than once a year. Here, however, it seemed as if you couldn’t turn around without a merchant holding up some trade good in his face, screaming the benefits of his product over the obvious flaws of his competitors. The officer had grabbed Julius’ arm and dragged him along as Julius’ head swiveled around, taking in the sights. That night, he was given his equipment and directed to the barracks where he barely slept, eager to see more of the city on the next day.

He was waken early the next morning by a screaming in his ear. “Get up you lazy dog. What do you think this is, the fleshpots of Karthage that you can lounge around sleeping all day? So help me if you aren’t out in the parade ground in five seconds I’m going to shove my spear so far up your arse that you’ll be peeing splinters for a week.” Under the barrage of curses that followed this threat, Julius got dressed and proceeded to the parade ground. For the rest of the day he marched up and down so many times, he swore that he had worn a groove in the ground. All the time, the drill sergeant followed Julius, hanging closer to him than his own cloak, all the time yelling comments about Julius’ parentage in his ear. The same scene repeated itself, day after day for an entire month. At the end of that month, Julius was unceremoniously given orders to march out to “Protect the honor and peoples of Karthage with your life.” Quickly Julius found out these orders were army-speak for “Sit in the middle of nowhere and if someone invades, try light this fire to warn us before your killed.” The ironic thing, thought Julius, was that he had joined the army to see the world, only to end up being stationed barely a few miles north of it in lands even more barren.

His thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of someone climbing the ladders. Soon a head popped up from the hole in the middle of the platform.

“Changing of the guard boy, get up and get some sleep.” As the speaker lifted himself up to the platform the torchlight flickered across his face, causing throwing shadows where a deep scar ran across his cheek.

“I’m not tired right now Tharos, if you don’t mind I’ll just keep you company for a while.” Julius sat in a corner, drawing his knees up to his chest and looked at the newcomer. Tharos was everything he wanted to be. Unlike Julius, he had lived, he had seen the world. Instead of a small farming village, Tharos had been born in Hegesta, the capital of the Karthaginian province of Sicily and one of the largest and most important cities in the empire after Karthage. According to Tharos he had even grown up the son of a merchant, traveling with his father across the known world. He had gotten his scar when he was discovered sleeping with a young woman in Malta. The fact that he was sleeping with her was not that big of a deal, that she was the daughter of one of the richest merchants in Sicily and married to the richest merchant in Malta, complicated things. The two families took a dim view of the matter, and decided Tharos would look good decorating a cross. Tharos held a different view, and decided that things would be safer elsewhere. So he joined the army and eventually got stationed in Pisae, one of the farthest places you could get from Malta while still being in Karthaginian lands.

“Tharos, have you ever been to Karthage?” Julius suddenly asked.

“Karthage? Aye, once, why do you ask?”

“Tell me, what’s it like.”

“Greatest city in the world, when the people fart it smells like roses and the women wait in line for the chance to bed you.”

“Tharos, I’m serious.” Julius said in mock anger, attempting to stifle a smile.

“Alright, alright….well lets see…it’s not the biggest city in the world, nor the oldest, but some say it is the richest. If it isn’t sold in Karthage it doesn’t exist. When you walk the streets during the day you have to shout if you want to say something to the person beside you because of the din of the merchants. Walking the streets is like being a part of a living rainbow. All around you are people from different countries, Balaeria, Illyria, even from as far away as Ur. The Karthaginians seem to spend their time doing nothing but earning gold and spending it. Gold is more common there than dirt, wine flows like there was a river of it going through the city. The streets are so crowed during the day, that they made a law there forbidding any carts in the city during the day because they would never move. So all during the night, you hear the creak of thousands of carts bringing goods into the city. And the temples, by Baal himself, the temples. And I’m not talking about the buildings either, though they weren’t shabby by any stretch of the imagination. No the priestess my lad, the priestess. For a few copper pieces, let me tell you, you could enjoy the best worship experience you ever had. Why I remember this one little thing, a priestess of Tanit…” Tharos continued his story, so wrapped up in his memories that he did not even notice Julius’ head nodding, falling asleep, his dreams full of the reported marvel that was Karthage.

Okay, my internet's been really faulty lately. This update might finish soon, or my idiotic dial-up will stop working again and the update will be a few days late. But I have faith. Starting it right now!

You havent even started...arrr jeeez.

ACK! Internet just got back, but it'll be gone again soon. I'm sorry, just starting on Europe now.

Wah! Update now??? I thought we were still patching up the last one! Sending orders now.

I'm using internet at a friend's house. I've got all done but Asia and Antarctica, but I won't be able to upload the map until my comp's back online.

Sigh, stupid Dialup.

Update VIII- 1800 BCE

Hawaii has continued to expand into North America. Their main cause is to monitor the jungle necromancers, but the jungles of Panama are also a very popular destination for the rich, being one of the new lands most like the Hawaiian archipelago. The last survivors of the destruction of Dur Khaz have accepted aid from Hawaii and founded the nation of Dur Veliz on OTL Easter Island.

The jungle necromancers have continued to corrupt more land, expanding mainly to the north, attracted by the magic from Hawaii's new colonies.

Hyperborea has purchased the island or Rhodes from Ur. They have begun a huge project of building up a majour trading center on the island. The Hyperboreans have now contacted all of the European and Black Sea nations.

Avalon has embarked on a huge campaign of expansion through the Atlantic Ocean. While it has been widely regarded as a bad move which displaces whole populations, the completion of the Tower of Immortality has appeased them for now. With all of these long-distance explorations occuring, the world is rapidly becoming a smaller place.
(-2 loyalty levels)

Gorin has completed their project, Patriot to Dreadmire. This has shown the public the propaganda that Gorin is superior to the power of Dreadmire. Merzan is more popular and powerful than ever.

The Atlantican civil war has come to an end, but at a catastrophic cost. The continued fighting between the factions killed uncounted numbers of civilians, estimated to be over half of Atlantica's population. The extremist northern leader, General Torez, has claimed rule over Atlantica. The constant geomantic magics have made the previous geographical alterations seem insignificant. Most of Atlantica has been forcibly ripped off of Europe. The shocks of the cataclysms were felt from Elgovia to the Indus. Near the epicenter, whole mountain ranges were torn down. Rivers have been rerouted, and Helvetia, which had been the closest nation to Atlantica, lost 2000 civilians but has gained a new coastline.
(Atlantica's stats minimalised, -2000 Helvetians)

Shortly after this disaster, a large group of Helvetians travelling to Balaeria, meaning to help the other damaged nation, was mistaken by the terrified Balaerians for an Atlantican army. The Balaerians fought in what they believed was defense, but they only triggered a war. Balaeria called for Karthage's aid, and it came. Helvetia was rapidly overrun, and King Francis fled to regions unknown. Resistance was weak, for the people were not pleased with the former king's inept rule. A few rebel pockets exist in the hillside, but they are already losing their will to fight.
(-50 Balaerian infantry, +1 loyalty, -50 Karthaginian infantry, +1 loyalty, +1 economy point put into increasing economy, -Helvetia)

Germania was left relatively unaffected by the catastrophe, for the destruction stopped just outside of its western border. The few remaining Atlanticans trapped along the jagged coast joined Germania on sight, though their population is negligible.

The Illyrians, following Avalon's lead, sent colony ships on a voyage to the New World. But their voyage was to be unexpectedly halted. The geological disturbances from Atlantica had sealed the Strait of Gibraltar itself! The New Atlanteans are currently working tirelessly to open up what this critical seaway. A side effect of this blockage is that all of the Mediterraneans tides and currents all must travel through the Sinai Canal. It has been rendered impassable ever since the Atlantican cataclysm, and all sea travel through the area has been halted. Fortunately, the only majour trade route travelling through the canal, the Khemri/Abyssinia route, could also work through the Nile river, so their trade has not been stopped.

Khemri has also claimed the Libyan glass-desert (A scar from the Atlantis/Ur war. Read the intro to this NES) as its own. Observers believe that the necromancers plan to perform experiments on the titanic mirror.

Abyssinia has reassumed control of the Mediterranean port of Menelika. Many Khemri citizens are displeased with this, but that hasn't changed any of the facts.

Ur continues its expansion, but problems at home are slowing that. In the city of Babylon, a group of powerful politicians are rising, and some fear that they may even aspire to topple the government. Because of this and the Atlantican disaster, Ur has paid little attention to the fact that Illyria colonised some of the Aegean that UR had claimed.

Tripolye has finally decided to wipe out the last remenants of Barbarian old Scythia. Their army poured over the land like a flood, and the Scythians, though their defense was valiant, were unorganized and defeated. The revolts afterwards didn't last long. The spirit of Old Scythia has been broken, and its people are all dead or enslaved.
(-100 Tripolean infantry.)

The Indus Empire has completed its huge Magical forge. With it, they have become the first people, other than Atlantis, to discover how to make powerful weapons and tools from Iron. This came just in time for Indus military expansion through India. Though only a few soldiers currently own iron weapons, it is expected that iron will soon become the Indus Empire's standard in weaponry.

The Indus army has claimed huge portions of central India as its own. The locals, impressed by their conquerors, have not tried any rebellions- yet.
(+1000 Indus population)

The Mongol Horde has slowed to a stop. They are consolidating their gains in Korea and China. Due to their good treatment of locals, there have been no rebellions. Their new land is wonderfully productive, and the economy is booming. Also, just to the south of Lake Baikal, the Tower of Karakorum has been completed. Around it, a fortress city has grown. Although it is not the normal way of Mongols to build cities, it is the Khan's opinion that a fortress would be necessary should things ever go bad for the Mongol army.
(+1 economy level)

The last Korean colonies have merged with Japan to form the nation of Kojaro. No one on the archipelago believes that the peace will last for long, and military buildup is constant.

A joint force of Rossian penguins and Antarcticans have moved north to investigate the evil energies to the north. There, they encountered the Hawaiians, and pooled their knowledge on the undead menace. They know much about its warriors and land, but not who actually controls it. They will soon have to decide how to deal with this problem if it is to be stemmed.

Notes: Yes, I know that across-ocean colonization is happening and may seem unrealistic. But magic is advancing humans at a far faster rate than was historically possible.

I can't believe I had to redraw half of this stupid map *$#&$@....*mutters, stares into a corner...

From Gorin
To all nations surrounding
we have emerged from out isolation, relations may resume

To Atlantica
we demand you either stop your destruction of land or join us, choose wisely but we will not tolerate this foolishness from ones so close to our island

4 Questions:

1. Did I make contact with Haida, or with any of the Pacific Nations? I sent scouting ships west, and up the coast of America...

2. Do I know all the Antarctic civilizations, or just Ross and Antarctica?

3. Does it still cost 2 points to set up a trade route, or has that changed?

4. How many points would it take to make a Panama canal? Or would it require a wonder?

Nice update Iggy. (not your best but still good ;) ). When are stats coming?

@Erik; what happened with the thing on the things?!? Sooner rather than later would have been good.

@Kentharu; better hurry while there is still an Atlantica left!

@Avalon: we are interested in discussing terms of alliance, pending discussion with other members of the Pact.

@Iroquis: Come to Ka-Commoriom, there is much we need to discuss.

To all peaceful nations of the Mediterranean
From the Hyperborean Suzirainity

Anyone want a trade route? we have Polar bears for sale ;)!

Hah no report of my Chaos Crystal being finished.Good update anyway :) though my ships not being able to travel to the New World is irritating.

From Avalon
To all nations I have contact with.

Travle of major fleets through Avalonian waters is now restricted. All ships wishing to cross the Ocean between the two contenents will have to do just that. cross the Ocean. ships carrying trade goods between the two continets will still be allowed to travel through avalonian waters, but military ships and collinzation fleets will be turned away, by force if neccesary.

OOC: that means no more easy crossings. if you want to collonize the new world, you will have to cross the ocean. a 3-4 month journy at best. where as travling Via avalon, its just 4 two week trips, and 1 three week trip. (or via treeship, half that.)

OOC:

What does it cost to build roads?
