LINESII- Into the Darkness- Part III

This is not to be understood as an IC communication from the Citadel, which in fact will deny all knowledge of it. It is presented as a story, and might perhaps, OOC, serve to shed some light on the current situation.

Palamon's Conjecture

The following is taken from the presentation of Palamon, Head Librarian of the East, at the Conclave of 2085.

...in summary, then, an examination of the primary sources shows that war, in the Citadel, has traditionally been understood as resulting from a lack of knowledge about the world as a whole. The traditional remedy, then, is first summarized, allegedly by the Prophet himself, in the well-known verses of 2 Revelations 4:16-19.[1] In other words, the great hope of our body: if only learning and mental discipline were extended throughout the world then peace would everywhere prevail.

I propose to reexamine this argument...

...Thus the historical record, properly interpreted, leads us to the inescapable conclusion that war comes not from lack of information, but from too much information. Specifically, war is the inevitable result of the formation of groups of intelligent beings on a larger level than the village. War comes due to the relentless drive to expand, to organize, to centralize of the nation-state or empire, a drive fundamentally unnatural to the individual, who desires only freedom and peace.

It is now time to reexamine perhaps the most controversial topic of Citadel scholarship--the Eldranians themselves. Given this conclusion, is it not possible, indeed probable, that the Prophet drew the wrong conclusion from the experience of the Eldranians? The Prophet concluded that the Eldranian War and Genocide were products of the Eldranian isolation from the rest of humanity (that is, their lack of knowledge about it); but the correct conclusion is that the War and the Genocide sprang from Eldrania's proximity to the rest of the world (that is, their knowledge of it).

Though I hesitate to say it, this brings us to a conclusion whose logic we cannot doubt, even if every cell[2] in our bodies cries out against it--to bring peace to the world, all organization larger than a village, all nations and states and empires, must be destroyed and never allowed to re-form.[3]

[1] 16 Gather all the knowledge under the sun, for all under the sun is your domain, as all above it is my domain. 17 Learn all the secrets of this world. 18 Teach these secrets to all men. 19 Preserve your knowledge, so that it will never die.

For an alternate telling of this verse, see here.

[2]Yes, cell. The Citadel has developed lenses by now.

[3]The other Head Librarians promptly expelled him from the Conclave, expecting the Citadel of the East to remove Palamon and replace him with a more conservative Librarian. This is not what happened, though...

OOC: This what you meant by anti-Citadel, NK?

OOC: Not quite. Can you get on the NES chat, jal (to discuss other matters)?

I might add: Nice story. :)

Jal, your stories were good when Veritas was just plain old, and not even ancient yet. And that's saying something. :p

Though IC, the VRV still demands a full explanation to the Council.

Sorry that I have to start the nagging questions, Iggy, but the religion section is really, really out of date. I could help update it, but you know how we have our biases... :p

To Kelios
from Zamdar

As a fellow Azulian, what is your take on the supposed threat from the east and the citadel offer?

To Chancosanx, Tir Tairngire, Norvalin, Zemoran Council

I assume you recieved the same message from the citadel, what should be done? we are not exactly trusting of them. We may send our men to help Syracia but what of our homelands? This could easily be a ploy.

we think it would be more wise to wait, if others send their forces to Syracia then we help. If not and this enemy reachs Kelios then we defend them.
Responses from Chancosanx and Tir Tairngire
We believe that a portion of our troops should be sent to Syracia, not for some foreign ideal, but to support our fellow Azulians and the Tricameron of Syracia.
To Destre, Trinlin, and Magland
From: Guangfei

Against whom do you prepare your arms against in defense? For does not friendship between families led to alliances of blood? Do you seek to turn away your friends in Guangfei with your swords drawn?

From: Trinlin
To: Guangfei

As there is no threat from Guangfei, there will be no turning away of friends between your and ourselves. As you yourself once said, no soldier of Guangfei has marched against the borders of Trinlin of Old. This agreement shall protect us from the unexpected, and provide a sense of security and brotherhood, a brotherhood where we would not be overshadowed by your majesty's brilliance.

We recognize your ties of blood to a lordship of the Hiutu Peoples.

May peace and friendship forever reign between our countries.

We recognize your independence. We shall dispatch emissaries to your respective courts immediately.

Our Heartfelt Thanks, Emperor of the Dragon Throne

Guangfei opens her borders to all of Emor. For the People of Emor has been noble, if not nobly led.
Those who wish to leave our onetime kingdom may do so as they please.

From: Abbot Ferak I guardian of the Abbey of Envia
To: Guarela

Proud people of Guarela your people grow weary of this war. Leave our coastline and return to your island and we may have peace. If not this war shall continue and your captured soldiers will be publically executed.
Our lands shall be returned, back to the original borders. If not, then we have no choice but to continue the war.

From: Kelios

From what confused reports we get out of the garrisons in the East, the Syracians may well have been on the brink of betraying us before they left quite suddenly. It seems to me that if they were so quick to leave, they must have had a reason -- whether that reason is truly an advanced nation of enemies almost beyond our ability to fight, or merely a horde of invaders, there seems to be something out there. Kelios will send a factfinding mission*, and with luck we will find out what has truly happened.

With this potential danger, we formally extend the offer of a mutual protection pact to all nations of Azulia; we will also be willing to work with the Citadel and foreign powers to try and coordinate some kind of response.

To: All Nations of Azulia
From: Kelios

See the above diplomacy to Zamdar; we extend the offer of a mutual protection pact.

OOC footnotes:

*And I really, really, really hope that this won't take a whole turn to do.

In retrospect, this is rather amusing, considering one of the nation concepts I was thinking of trying out was an anti-Citadel. :p
The NPC nations of Azulia agree.

OOC: I'm continuing to represent the three Valin Republics in diplomacy, but their tone of voice will be separate: Paleaveritas is imperial and arrogant, Norvalin is quiet and direct, and Neaveritas is pious and calculating.
I'm not sure if this is fair. You should choose one primary nation, and speak for it. You can speak for the other two republics, but I will be in a position to contradict your words if they disagree with what your republic claims.

Also, I would describe Norvalin as more 'pious and quiet'- but that's just nitpicking.

JSorry that I have to start the nagging questions, Iggy, but the religion section is really, really out of date. I could help update it, but you know how we have our biases... :p
I'll get to it.

As a fellow Azulian, what is your take on the supposed threat from the east and the citadel offer?

Syracia seems to be in dire straits, so perhaps we ought to help them out. Our mission did indeed find them fighting forces possibly beyond our understanding...

To: The Nations of Azulia

We have communicated to Kelios the general situation and our proposed solutions; they can help coordinate the response.

So be it you have sealed the fate of your imprisoned people. And those unfortunate to be captured in ensuing battles.

Ectinlinism
Ectinlinism is another branch of Trinlinism. Although all of the original gods are present in the pantheon, major changes have been made by Ect [1] priests to convert those whom still worshipped the old nature spirits. And while traditional Trinlinism is still fairly popular among those in the higher places in society, Ectinlinism is growing in popularity in the lower-classes. The changes made to Trinlinism seem to be small enough that two people, one practicing Trinlinism, the other practicing Ectinlinism, can get married without having too much conflict over religion.

Terrium is the main god of Ectinlinism, governing over the ground of the world, as well as plants. The main reason for his popularity is that he provides trees for woodsmen and soil for farmers, two groups of people that make up a large portion of Ecturin’s population. He is often more associated with plants than the earth, considering many old beliefs of Ect people involved worshipping the spirits of forests.

Zester is generally seen as an enigma, governing over a realm that mortals can’t imagine. He is often given the title as god of knowledge, gifting the curious with the knowledge they need. Zester, although considered fascinating by the people of Ecturin, is not usually prayed to.

Wiviter is almost as unpopular as Zester. Although farmers understand the importance of the river to their crops, they often give credit to Terrium for their crops growing. Wiviter is credited with weather, although the people of Ecturin tend to not like snow, it being cold and all.

Ouvunter is possibly the most disliked god in Ectinlinism. He is blamed for bringing cold winds into the Wildlands. He is often seen as a bringer of death, killing those whom go outside without protection from the cold. Gusts of wind are often thought to be Ouvunter’s laughter as he watches the people of the Wildlands freeze.

Cinnav is a close second in popularity, right behind Terrium. Cinnav is loved by many for his gift, fire. He brings light to villages to keep away the beasts of the wilderness. Cinnav is widely worshipped by nobles, crediting him for their many luxuries.

Nice stuff Ninja! I've updated the religions, and if anyone would like more religions or sects added, please, either describe it to me or write one for me to put into the post. I'm thinking of you, Cult of Tzu. i've never been entirely clear on that.

Hail friend. It is with joy that we come to you in times of peace, and as such we wish to discuss the future of our world. We have stood at your side for a long time, and it is with honor that we can consider ourselves allies. We have seen that you command such a large number of peoples, and as long as you rule fairly, we will not see any reason to interfere with our native populaces. However, we wish to discuss the option of purchasing the entirety of the East Bank of the Lunx from your nation. We promise a fair value.

Apologies, but no. Friends though we are, we do not wish to surrender our only secure seaport. I truly hope that you understand our desire to not become landlocked.

Hah. Hope that defensive pact we signed after the fall of Eldrania is still good. ;)

We will share all our information with the Council, soon.

If I had to choose a 'nation,' I'd choose the Eldarium, earn 1 point per turn and have just the island of Veritas under my control. Then I'd continue to direct the general foreign policy of the Republics, and leave the specifics up to you.

So, whats going on with Tigot lately? Anything special? And why no one has killed that city yet?

A really no one cares for them eh? All this thousands of years, one would think their hiding something...

OOC: How many of them are there still? A few thousand at most? Stop asking for attention erez :p
