A funeral is the greatest rite in the life of a Crystalist. His life reaches a better existence and ultimate fulfillment through dying. The death of a person is also marked by the grief of those around: family, relatives and friends. Therefore, the duty of The Red Lady is both to guide the deceased spirit, and to bring comforting and soothe those left behind. The main characteristic of a Crystalism funeral is the mixed feeling of joy for the completion of a life, and the sorrow of a loved one lost.
The most basic funeral consists of a ritual interrement, followed by a month of rememberance and prayer. This month, the closest relatives of the deceased usually wear ashen grey or dark grey clothes, and eat bitter herbs with every meal. Friends and neighbours often join in these acts of grieving, and it is also customary to visit the house and bring gifts. The month is believed to be the time the spirit takes to reach the Netherworld, where all dead spirits end up. Still, those who do not revere The Red Lady will not reach the Netherworld fully, and often end up "in between", never quite being "released" from the shackles of mortal life.
After the month of grieving, the family gather again to speak of the dead ancestors, and tell stories and myths. Then the entire gathering pray until sunset when they celebrate the safe passage of the dead spirit to the Netherworld. Not until the day after is the actual gravestone raised over the buried corpse. The stone will then be painted red, which will gradually wear off over time.
More ostentatious funerals may involve divination rituals, offering/crushing of crystals and raising of monumental grave markers, frequently obelisks with veins of crystals from the Crystal Ridge Mountains. The Priests are known for having separate rituals where the body is cremated and strewn in the river Wardash. High Priests or Fathers, as the new title is called, are cremated and buried in carved stone urns within the Stone Circle outside Ruby.
Once in the Netherworld, the spirit is believed to be liberated and exist in the most natural and blessed state of man. Completely emancipated from the sufferings of corporeal life, the dead are free to roam and exist in peaceful harmony. Some dead spirits come back to their mortal kin to guide them - frequently when called upon through divination rituals. Others assume a protective role over their families and kin, as long as they continue to rever and honor the dead spirit - and stay true to The Red Lady and indirectly the Church.
