Didn't any of you play Civ IV where monasteries give +10% :science:?

Then you discover Scientific Method and obsolete all your science ... Monasteries and Great Library ... WHY????
 
^In the medieval era monasteries were among the very few places where there were books as well as people knowing to read. At least in western europe. In the Byz empire there were philosophy schools and academies at least until Justinian banned them in case they only were greek-centered (ie not christian).
 
So that bug monastery had no books?
 
Ah, so its like an obsolete monastery! Only provides the culture bonus.
 
I knew of Mount Athos and that it's pretty much one of the holiest places in the Orthodox world, but I didn't realise that it's technically autonomous.

Yeah, it is so because otherwise it would not be able (by law) to maintain some of its rules, or at least the one about no women visitors.
