^In the medieval era monasteries were among the very few places where there were books as well as people knowing to read. At least in western europe. In the Byz empire there were philosophy schools and academies at least until Justinian banned them in case they only were greek-centered (ie not christian).
I knew of Mount Athos and that it's pretty much one of the holiest places in the Orthodox world, but I didn't realise that it's technically autonomous.
