ljNES - The Sentient Beast

Yes, that's not difficult at all, it's just that such differences don't form the continuum that Terrance describes.

You mean the continuum he wants :p. he will probably not get the continuum thing...

The rise and fall of Nefat

The beginning of the Nephati writing system in early bronze age city of Nefat marks a great change in the culture of Aphaym tribes. The small number of cities back than begun to change thanks to the new writing system's ability to encourage much more trade and a larger ability to maintain control over agriculture. The city of Nefat under king Naok was the first to gain from this invention as the accords say king Naok invented the system.

The city of Nefat is located in the northern reaches of the Aphaym culture of before the colonial age. After the invention of the Nephati writing system the city quickly grew larger thanks tot he ability to more easily manage supplies and has gained a short time control over most of the northern Aphaym. The city encouraged trade and larger farming lands and also perfected some of the first chariot towers to enter actual battle.

The rise of the city was quick and after the death of king Naok, under the reign of his son (of unknown name) the city suffered several years of major drought and lack of food and eventually lost to another growing Aphaym city location further north. The writing system that gave Nefat its edge quickly spread both northward and southward and the city of Nefat fell from grace.

The city still exist today and it is a strong proponent of the anti-colonial movement going through Aphaym. The city mothered no colonies and has little to no strategic importance.

The masters of the northern sea lanes

Quickly after the fall from grace of Nefat another city state gained in power and influence and eventually defeated and pushed Nefat away from its strength. Thanks to far richer farmlands that did not suffer from the major drought too much and thanks to a small agricultural colony in the north the city of Umpor rose to prominence in northern Aphaym.

Its interest idea of agricultural colonies saved it from the major drought and made Umporian kings much more open to the idea of building colonies under the control of the mother city. Several small colonies and strong trade lanes with other cultural groups for supplies of food made Umpor the strongest northern city (but far from the only one). Umpor is also sometimes regarded as the birth place of the Tri-rows large ships, sometimes named Triremes and in northern Aphaym and some outside cultures named Umpa.

Umpor have for some time now enjoyed near complete control of the northern sea lanes and thanks to this powerful grip over trade and small colonial business it has remained the major northern Aphaym city state for over a century now.

The Colonial Era begins
While northern Aphaym was for several centuries the key area for historical importance eventually the Nefati writing system and the colonial ideals of Umpor reached the growing southern cities.

The growth of the southern cities have been much greater in the past centuries thanks to the lack of any of the drought years and a growing pro-colonial group of cities. There are 10-20 known free city states south of Nefat, each mothering several colonies across the sea. Each of this free city states are able to defend itself as regional powers but only a handful of any major universal power to wield outside of Aphaym.

The first city to truly mother a free colony away from Aphaym ancient cultural boundaries was Rehaf. Rehaf has reach farmlands and is the mother of several dozens of daughter cities that freely trade with it and aid it in times of need. Rehaf today also holds one of the largest Aphaym fleets known.

The second major city to rise is Dahi. It had some of the most colonial minded kings of note. It mothered perhaps hundreds of small city states across major colonial locations and probably the largest number of large free daughter city states. Several of these daughter city states are not free at all and a Dahi occupying force remains to keep them under control. The city of Dahi is the largest populated Aphaym city of note but it is known to be rather unstable and seems to go through vast population changes because of kinds that go overboard with sending their population to create new colonies.

Other than Dahi and Rehaf, as noted, many other cities mothered colonies. It is important to note that a large majority of colonies are free city states, and many are on the growth and on the way to tower even their mother states. Most city states and colonial city states are rather small, having no more than 2 thousand people.

The major colonial zones are usually rich areas that seem more alike the original Aphaym homeland but some tiny trading outposts do appear on less rich lands, like the Uroah colony (under control of Dahi) on the Uroan desert south of Aphaym.

OOC: More city names for colonies and other homeland city states I assume will be required?
The map marks the major city states and Nefat (that isn't major anymore), as well as the major shipping lanes the Aphaym would probably use by the end of update one (and on which colonies are usually formed, usually in semi-temperate areas that fit with the shipping lanes and most on the islands).
The northern lanes are mostly under Umpor influence and don't have many free colonies but rather small agricultural communities as colonies of Umpor and other northern cities that produce food and resources for the cities and are not free.

According to this, the time is 16.49. Last updates to your cultures should be added before then. I'll not be able to work properly on the update tonight, but tomorrow I'll get the last things done.

Well duh, waves of migrants did change Teraponia, and their influence waxes and wanes as they are assimilated in time for another migratory wave. I'm saying that Terapon Proper at the foot of the path has changed the most, as seen by the multitude of names (actually, I just used a RNG to find consonants and vowels) while cities between that area and closer to Ascen Minor only seen a few nomadic lords in their lifetimes. Ascen proper might have never faced a Nomadic Horde before, as they would become mostly assimilated if they ever reach that area.

EDIT: What I mean is that the very basic culture is the same, the major difference is the amount of influence from nomadic raids: Alot in Terapon, Barely Any at Ascen Minor and none at Ascen Major. It's sort of like comparing the dualism between the Yellow River and the Yangtze over the history of china: The Yellow River area served as a breadbasket for the large armies needed to contain the Nomads while the Yangtze became an more important hub of domestic commerce.

I don't follow what you're saying, if that's meant to be in relation to the Ausctuscth and the Teraponians.

The basic underlying culture is the same. As in lifestyle of peasants/beliefs/whatever when first civilization started.

In the terms of evolution, our cultures diverged because mine had to deal with Nomads while yours had to deal with other cities.

In the terms of how far the nomads attacked, there is a blurred border between Auschtuscth and Tereponian borders which is based on the high-water mark of various nomadic conquerors and therefore the most commonly affected area.

Terapon which I wrote the template for is the most extreme, the "exemplary" from of the culture which is completely affected by nomads every generation or so.

The Ausctuscth which your template was for is the "exemplary" civilizied High Kingdom which has fought no nomadic hordes and only other city states, and developed in that fashion.

My statements were my views on the borders between our cultures, the relationship between Ausctuscth Major and Minor (LuckyMoose) towards Terapon, and to make it easier to reason out the cultural border. (So that is the maximum conquered lands... that is the generally conquered lands... that is the always conquered lands... Instant culture mixture map.)

Anyhow, for the names of the cities which you used to say that our cultures are at its basis completely different, I would like to first say that I just made up some names which would sound like a compromise between the nomads and the sedentary folk- infact, most cities would probably have two names- and also that the peasantry over the generations are still the same; only the ruling class of nomads are different.

Well, our descent could be a lot of things, and that'll be up to lj to decide for certain. :) And yes, I do have names in my own language for you Teraupen, so a degree of bilingualism at our cultural borders seems possible.

You guys need to stop ooc-ing this and start making stories the way you want it to be.

I think I may join, and take control of an colony that broke away from one of the Aphaym city-states (with erez87's permision, of course). If permission is lacking, I'll just see where else is available. After the update, of course.

Any city state lj decides to make out of my culture is free play. I myself await to see the map and city states to choose one for actual play.

(I love teasing you guys by replying to the thread without having the update finished.)

erez has the first pick on any of the Aphaym city states (There will be a couple) and then anyone will be free to take over any of the unclaimed parties.

I have to say that I'm impressed. I say that as I severely dislike bumps; they rather make feel powerless than make me begin updating.

I haven't had time the last many days - the time I did have was used correcting my sleep pattern or being drunk.

Now I finally have time to do the update! ... Except I forgot my bag and pc at a house I visited last night.

I'm hereby declaring, per modly authority, that you guys are awesome for not putting me under pressure.

This post is reserved for the first part of the update (Story, factoids, snippets, epic, migration lines, assorted maps & pictures), probably uploaded Monday night.

This post is reserved for the second part of the update (Stats), probably uploaded Tuesday night.

I was really busy about this with loads of free time, but then I got a job.

I still have the update semi-finished, but I want to know if people are interested if I should continue working on it. I know how people can feel uninspired with longer mod absence, but it's not lack of interest that have caused myself to semi-abandon this, at least. Will people still want to delve into the creation of these societies, the dynamics of our cultures, and the emergence of the mysterious and mighty Karami nomads? *Shameless plug for interest*

If people want to still participate, I'll be happy to finish the update. But this NES will be somehow slow-paced with updates regular, but presented once each month or something. North King somehow managed to pull his N3S forth quite nicely even spanning a couple of years. I will swear not to make this as slow as that NES, but if you want in, don't expect an update each week, since I simply don't have the time.

On other news, my work isn't technically a "job" per se, but I'm an unpaid intern at a children's institution where they can play and develop individually and socially. And I feel that I'm really growing myself through this internship. So things are going splendidly and I have plenty of energy for RL things. I have even begun working out. So perhaps I will finally assemble consciousness and will to write the update with all life being thrown at me.

Because trust me, the things I have prepared for a potential start of this NES are pretty awesome in my eyes. You'll see if you want to see.

To gain trust one must show he is trustworthy.

I'm interested, are you sure you are?

I'm interested, are you sure you are?

Yes, but again, not if I have to pressure myself to weekly updates. It stresses my conscience in real life if I know I'm disappointing you guys and mismanaging your hard work.

So yes. If you agree it's fine doing this slowly. :)
