LK148 - WM, farewell to Greece

I don't know if anyone who has triple bypass surgery is ever really fine, but supposedly, I'm no longer a ticking time bomb who's heart is liable to give out at any moment.

It takes a lot of days to recover your stamina from this kind of surgery. I'm not healed yet, but won't be for weeks till the incisions close up. I can not drive for at least 4 weeks from the date of the surgery, and can not go back to work until legally released to do so. Right now that doctors appointment is set for March 6th, but I;m trying to get that moved up 1-2 days for work reasons.

There are many things I have to do, including showering so that the water does not hit the chest and leg incisions, patting the incisions to clean and dry them, avoid certain foods, especially things high in Vitamin K like cabbage, broccoli, and brussel sprouts, which sucks, because I love all those, and especially drink less than 2L of fluids per day... Which is the biggest killer for me. I'm used to drinking 8+L of fluid daily, so to me this is really hard. I've had nightmares about turning to dust since surgery. I'm not sure what all the punishments are in Hell, byt I'm sure one of mine must be some kind of fluid restriction :lol

Hell yeah, my family has been genetically cursed to have high cholesterol and I have several senior relatives died of heart attacks. Your information is invaluable for me.

Just a quick note: I'm running a little behind, but I should be able to finish and post tomorrow morning.

Well, it didn't go as well as I'd have liked, but it could have been rather worse than it was.

Partway through I realized that part of the reason I was having trouble finding stray units was because the colored circles were off; turning them on helped.

I let the infrastructure builds complete before switching back to units, so our army is somewhat reduced.

Turn 0:
Make embassy with Babylon. Alliance vs Egypt is very pricey. I decide to see if we can connect a road, so we can make a better trade.
Declare on Germany. First horse 2/4 killing spear, second horse retreats from archer without scratching it, third horse 2/4 kills archer, takes Hamburg. Keep it for now so we can move through. Horse kills spear, takes Leipzig. Find a stack of German units marching through Russia; they may be at war. Horse kills archer near Leipzig.
Swap Delphi to worker, Thermopylae to settler. March on Berlin.
IBT: Lose a horse near Frankfurt. Lots of civs start ToA and GW.

Turn 1:
Advance. Try to lure archers into not attacking hoplite in Leipzig.
IBT: The archers suicide anyway, and our golden age starts.
Turn 2:
Horses kill 4 archers. Advance.
IBT: Nothing.
Turn 3:
Cats go 3/4 at Berlin, horses retreat, one dies, swords advance.
IBT: Archer kills a scouting horse. Egyptian galley approaches.

Turn 4:
Lose a bunch of swords killing all spears in Berlin. An archer remains.
IBT: Lose a sword to an archer, our horse kills an archer. Egypt lands an archer.

Turn 5:
Take Berlin, kill Egyptian archer. Pick off two German archers and a settler; can't get the workers to safety though.
Pay Babylon gpt to enter Egyptian war. It is still pricey, but we have lots of cash now.
IBT: Monotheism is known to two AI.
Turn 6:
Advance
IBT: zzz
Turn 7:
Build Argos; it is a pretty tight build, but it has two fish and a deer forest, two of which can't be worked by other cities.
Kill an archer.
IBT: zzz
Turn 8: Advance
IBT: zzz
Turn 9:
Take Koenigsberg.
Turn 10:
Kill some archers.

We need to take at least Frankfurt before stopping, because it has ivory. Germany will give us several small towns for peace.

Shame about the GA and the army, but nice progress here.

I like argos spot, at third ring a bit tighter placement should be ok.

I would also think that we need bremen and frankfurt in order to secure the ivory, but maybe we can get bremen in the Peace treaty once we get frankfurt.

Build Argos; it is a pretty tight build, but it has two fish and a deer forest, two of which can't be worked by other cities.
I'll have to take a look at it later, but another tight city is not the phrase I wanted to hear.

I already hate how tight our empire is. The Greek starting position doesn't help for getting 12 land tiles, but the tightness makes it worse. I realize this is only emperor, but we still need a core with decent production.
I'm going to do up a detailed analysis tonight, but my gut says we have locked ourselves into to many small cities.
When I agreed to Greece, I didn't realize how over crammed our core would be.

If Frankfurt has ivory, please make sure we have a settler to replace it. I refuse to risk resource cities to a flip.

I want cash and techs from Germany first. If they still will give us cities after that, let's see if we can get those in Scandinavia. If needed, we can abandon them, but it gets German culture away from Berlin. If we can keep, we need an ASAP galley that stays in the Baltic as a shuttle.

I like Argos spot, at third ring a bit tighter placement should be ok.
This is a huge map with an OCN of 32 (IIRC). The last game as China had semi productive cities in India and Mongolia. Our empire will be massive. We can't think a standard map game. No matter what we will go well into the 3rd age. We will need high production cities that can build cavalry fast. Tight builds won't give us that core. The goal is domination which means all of Eurasia, Africa and more. Fourth and fifth rings can still be decent on this map with courts.

Germany has nothing - minimal cash, and they haven't even learned math. The cities are going to be all we can get from them. Germany's culture is rather less than ours, so I wouldn't worry about a flip, but we can raze and replace if you like.

Argos is a tight build only because of the size of the map. It and the cities around it will easily work 12 tiles.

Until I actually started in Europe, I didn't realize how fouled up it is for quality cities.

It's not that bad, but it is certainly nothing like what we had for the last game.

However, playing on Emperor, I don't think we'll have many problems. Germany and France are going to belong to us very quickly, since neither has iron. (Germany has iron, down in Spain, but it isn't connected.)

As long as cities can work 12 tiles I don't think it is too tight. I think most or all will be able to if we place the next cities well (not too tightly) or keep the AI cities which are more spread out.

I do agree you want to work 12 tiles in your most productive cities. I think this game will be decided before we can get size 13 cities.

The Good:
The German war can be finished this turn. I just razed Bremen, and Germany is now finally willing to talk real peace.

We get:
Hannover, Heidelbertg, Stuttgart (all in Scandinavia)
Nuremberg (the iron city in Iberia)
and either 46gp or 20 gp + Salzburg

Since Salzburg is a size1 city in the siberian tundra, which will be a flip risk and will be hard to hold, once we lead war against Russia I lean toward variant 1. In this case Germany will keep its capital and two size one town all located in arctic russia.

Also I have build Mycenae near the finnish Ivory (Mammuts?) and there is another settler up there ready to found helsinki if we want to. If we dont the AI will plant here, there is a french guy on his way already.

The Bad
Still 11 turns until Monarchy
I let a german archer walz into hamburg unintenditly, but was easily able to retake it next turn. I think this helped us with the peace deal we are getting now but it cost us an almost ready trebuchet.

Also Babylon is slowly losing the egypt war, so maybe we should take part in that one soon (on one side or the other. Carving up babylon together with egypt sounds interesting too.

A deal tun out in turn 9 on 3 different luxes. Since we didnt need them to get above 0% Lux I haven't renewed yet.

The log:
Spoiler :

Preturn:
Make a excel too see if we are really spaced too tightly, and find it easily possible to give 12 land tiles to each city.
Actually we have a few tiles we cant use at all, so we should move Hamburg one spot to the east actually.

The Future
The french are willing to sell Lit and Monotheism is also around, and probably we have enough money to buy it if we want.
Do we research Feud --> Chiv after Monarchy or doo we beeline directly to MT?

I checked out in an excel and right now all our cities can work 12 laqndtiles without overlap. Considering that we might want to work a few fishes and the like, we shouldnt have any problem in this area. Actually it wont quite work oput that way due to the alps or anatolian hills and other minor nuissances. Actually if we dont move Hamburg one spot northeast, we will have a spot in our core which we cant work from any city. OF course moving hamburg there puts them in the only place where they are not on a river.

Whom to attack next?
Russia would be the logical target giving where our army is now but we have a very long front with them and they probably have lots of hinterland where they can build millions of archers to counterattack.

Babylon will probably crumble immediately after what egypt did to them, but its a long way from northern sweden.

France is also quite far away but bif we get rid of them, we loose an entire second front.

I'd like to take out the French while their lack of iron matters, assuming they still have no iron (I can't open the save right now). They are tech leaders, so they might reach gunpowder before we get to them if we go after Russia first. I'd rather fight spears than musketeers.

I heartily agree with CKS (and also can't open the save right now) We have, I think, played a little cautious for emperor so far (which is better than reckless I admit), Lets try to take out some folks down the path of least resistance first, which will grow our useful cities too.

Flips to Germany would be very unlikely... but I don't see why we need to make peace with them either. What do they have to offer anyone for an alliance?
