Read annals and histories by Tacitus. They are about the early empire only, but very fun to read: Tacitus lived in the latter part of the first century, so what he tells goes into more detail and isn't as much chewed as modern histories. You also get to see how people then thought. If you haven't read classics before, it will probably be striking to see how similar they are to us.

Don't let the word "classic" frighten you, Tacitus' text is excellent and lacks irritating decoration you might be expecting. (Old translations might be burdensome to read though, but just pick another one if it is so).
