Mac GOTM Installers

but when I would open Civ, nothing would be there.
What did you expect to see? If all you've done is to install the 23 file set then the next step is to try to run the GOTM23 vanilla start file.

So I go to the GOTM 23 page (Arabs, right?) I download the setup files for Civ Mac, try to drag and drop, and the same message comes up - "already installed in the folder."

Use the link in my Links and Threads posts in the GOTM Reference thread.
But it's worth checking on what you want to achieve first. Are you:

a) Trying to play old Games of the Month like GOTM23?

b) Trying to play current Games of the Month like the up-coming GOTM33?

c) Trying to get Bluebox's GOTM mod working so that you can play random games using the extra civs and units?

If (a) then you just need the GOTM 23 start file as I have said. (GOTM 22 or 21 will also work with the GOTM23 set-up)

If (b) or (c) then you need to press on and install the file sets for GOTM 24 and GOTM 25 as well. In which case I'll probably need to dig out the links for those sets for you.

Please let me know which objective you are aiming for.

No. You need the start file. You don't install it. You just put it in your Saves folder in Civ3 and open Civ3, select Load Game and open the GOTM game start file to start playing.

A Game of the Month is a specific game on a preset map with a preset civ and preset rivals. Everyone plays the same game. You first install the mods to provide the extra civs and units - it sounds like you've already done that. Then you download the actual game start file, which is a .SAV file, usually delivered in a .ZIP. For GOTM 23 the liks to these are given in the readme that's installed for GOTM 23. Alternatively you can find links to the start files in my reference posts.

Let's stick to (a). I swear, if you can get through this, you can get through anything!

I go to the ReadMe in the initial file download, and open up the read me file, whereupon I am directed to the start files for GOTM23.
I download this folder to my desktop, and put the entire folder, which on my desktop reads "map development" into the Saves folder inside my CIV III folder.
I then open up Civ III and proceed to Load Game.

On my program, the computer DOES NOT open up the traditional look window that CIV III has for starting saved games, but instead reverts back to a basic file open window like you would get if opening up a MSWord file or some other program while working on your desktop Mac. It doesn't have any Civ III fancy graphics or anything. This started happening after I installed the 1.29 patch.

In any case, I don't know if it makes a difference, BECAUSE -
When I proceed to open up the Save folder to retrieve GOTM 23, "Map Development" is there, but after opening that, I notice that the "GOTM for1.29start.sav" is highlighted in grey, preventing me from clicking it open.

Stuck, I hit Cancel, which returns me immediately to the Civ III start menu with the fancy graphics and the music, etc...

This is where I am at now. many many many many thanks.

Hi, I just finished a GOTM 23, and right after the window message: "You have achieved a Diplomatic Victory!" I then get an error window and when I click OK Civ crashes. I have a G5 Mac running Civ3 1.29fbeta2. I downloaded GOTM 23, then 24, and 25 following AlanH's instructions. The only other error I noticed during my game was that several of the leaderheads were missing. Any ideas?

To play GOTM 23 you should only install the GOTM 23 mods. The GOTM 24 mod included a new pediaicons.txt file that is not compatible with earlier games, as you have found. If you still have the autosave from the last turn you can just rerun the GOTM 23 installer and then load up the autosave and replay the last turn to see the victory parade.

Alan, thank you. Unfortunately, when I try to load the GOTM 23 full installer, it gives me an error and says to try again. I try again and again with the same result. Any ideas?

Do you mean you get errors when you run it? Did it run OK originally?

If it's the installer that's failing, look in the Installer's File menu after the error message comes up. Select "Show Log" and in the pop up menu at the bottom of the log window select "Show Everything". That should give some clues about why the installer failed. If you don't understand what it says, copy and paste it to a post or PM here and I'll have a look at it.

I wonder why I didn't get an email that there was a response?

Anyway, thanks for the advice. After reading the log which had nothing helpful for me, I realized maybe I could read the instructions more clearly... and I confess, I wasn't selecting the correct file path. Duh! So I got it installed correctly so I could see myvictory - woohoo, a score over 3,500, that's one of my best!

Unfortunately, after all was said and done, Civ3 now crashes whenever I try to open the Hall of Fame (I want to see how this game compares to my others). Any ideas?

The Hall of Fame is a text file called HighScores.cv3 in your CivIII folder. I guess the game might crash if the file doesn't exist, or if you've changed it using a word processor. It works fine on my system, so it's specific to your set up. If you want me to have a look at it for you and see if it works here, attach it to a post. You may have to zip it first as the attachments system is fussy about file extensions. Or just rename a copy of it with .txt on the end.

The file is not updated when you complete a modded game, so GOTMs don't get added, and completing your GOTM 23 shouldn't have broken it.

It's just a text file, so you can add your own high scores to it manually if you want to. Here are the instructions posted by Aeson once long ago ...

Open up the HighScores.cv3 file and add a line like this:

Brennus 25 2866 3 4 1

code:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name Civ(Color) Score Difficulty VictoryType Victory/Loss
Brennus 25 2866 3 4 1--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Color: 0-31, matches up to the way they are listed in the editor.
Difficulty: 0-5 Chieftain-Deity
VictoryType: Domination(0), Conquest(1), Cultural(2), Diplomatic(3), Spacerace(4), Retired(5), Histograph(6)
Victory: 1 Loss: 0

If you want to see how your GOTM 23 score compared with the original competitors there's a Jason score calculator on the GOTM web site where you can select the game and enter your date and score and victory condition.

Once again, thank you Alan! I opened the file and found the problem - it had the color (Civ) as number 23, but in our Mac vanilla Civ version, there are only I [I think] 16 Civs, so I changed the number to 16, and it worked! I can view my Hall of Fame just fine now.

Alan, with your help you make playing the Mac version of Civilization bearable, which helps me feel good about my PC to Mac conversion :)

Now, I'll follow the link and find out how my score did compared to the orginal players' GOTM scores.

:hmm: The GOTM start files have up to 32 civs defined in them, but they should never try to update the HoF file, so I don't know where the 23 came from.

Hmmm, well the Hall of Fame got updated when I won the GOTM 23 game. Isn't that what happens every time you have a victory no matter what scenario, mod, or game you play? I just played the last turn and watched the victory screen (you know, replay highlights, the faces saying "OK you won this time, but I'm ready for another try", and "Saliddin the Conquereor", etc.), and then "Do you want to quit or Do you want to play on without score keeping?" screen. Then, I looked at Hall of Fame.

Strange! I've always understood that modified games didn't update the HoF. If the GOTM *did* update it then it may well have put a number greater than 16 in the record. If you then looked at it without the GOTM file running I guess it would have failed to find civ #23. But if the GOTM was still running it ought to have found it OK.

Well that is what happened. When I first won, Civ3 crashed before the vitory screen. You advised me about reinstalling GOTM23 becuase I had installed 24 and 25 over it, so not all the things were loading properly in my 23 game, like some of the leaderheads, for example. I reloaded 23, played that last turn again and everything worked fine, the leaderheads and the final victory screens.

Then, I went to view HoF and Civ3 crashed, so I tried multiple times. That's when you told me about how to edit the HoF file. When I opend it, I found Saliddin 23... from the GOTM23 game that I just won. I changed the 23 to 16, saved it, and reloaded Civ3 HoF and it viewed just fine.

Im not really sure what the problems were with all the crashes in #35 but Ill try to see if can spec em out with ya. It helps a little that my roommate (PC) and I started playing GOTM the same time, so its helped me to determine what is and isnt Mac specific problems.

Did you use my Mac GOTM installers? If you did, and still had all these problems I'd like to know. The ones I can recognise are:

- Spain.flc - a known problem, but if you used the installers that should not have happened.

I think the installers are fine, they seemed to work without any problems. I use to play a standard Vanilla version (no graphic or other enhancments), since I came to GOTM I added a few terrain enhancements (as per my screenshots in GOTM36) ...other than that everything was stock. The Vikings in #35 gave me the most problems/crashes. But that seemed to stabilize after copying the flics to the main civ folder, I had also done that for most of the new Civs after reading about the fix/directory issue for a just-in-case thing. While trying to get the Viking issue resolved I had tried two fresh installs to make sure everything was done correctly, think one was even done by hand from searching thru all the GOTM's for newly added files that I might have been missing. But in comparision, your installers did everything correctly automatically to when I did it manually...so the installers seemed ok.
So my next step was to assume the game was looking for a misnamed file, so i went thru the .ini's and .txt files to track down what file it was actually looking for, again all seemed fine, aside from a few Wonder Pop-ups (which a fix was posted for soon after). So only other place to look was a directory issue / looking for something in the wrong place. I tried hex-edit and a couple others, but couldnt get down to that level of the coding,so I would have to leave that to the programmers to check. With nothing else to do, i went back and copied/renamed a few files to look more like the the way the stock files were named ( I was desperate/frustrated and out of options ) ...I left the original files as originally named and located, and just manipulated the copies I made. so I have a few xtra files named "Vikings.flc" and "Dal-Riada.flc" and even copied/renamed a couple stock files (Lz_01.flc) to "Dal-Riada_Ancient.flc" to trouble shoot it that way, but nothing helped. Ainwood later determined that the GOTM file was looking for the Viking .flc inside the main Civ3 folde. So I all the new Civ.flc's for that game into my main directory, and I was on my way again.

- the crashes that continued came in two forms....one when I would sometimes go and contact a civ thru the diplomacy screen. new ones, stock ones, did not matter, there didnt seem to be a pattern other than I would double click the Leader, the ring would light, the music would stop, a quick pause, then to a black screen (as normally would just before reaching next screen), then crash to desktop.
- the other form was inbetween turns. just as it would begin my turn or do a pop-up for some instance a little bit into my turn (the time while it is running thru builds and acknowledgements before new move choices begin). ...same,pause,black screen, cdt. This seem to fix by restarting from the autosave, turning off most everything in preferences/audio/visual then clicking for next turn....8/10 times this would work, then I would go back reactivate preferences and continue playing again till the next time it would happen (5,20,40, turns later...there didnt seem to be a pattern). This may have to do with a computer/cpu thing (only thing I could figure at that point). I often run RC-72 while I play ( a major cpu user, but only uses whats available, doesnt steal anything for itself. ) and its never been a problem before GOTM, and it wasnt a problem in #36, where Ive had 0 crashes from start to finish. So this leads me to assume it is an issue with #35 itself, since it had other issues from the beginning.

as far as the -Spain issue in #36, I never had the problem. Though my roommate did with his pc till he read the fix.

AlanH said:
- resources no appearing - since GOTM30-something you have to do a resource file swap after installing. That's made clear in various placed in the forum.

yes, that was fixed early on in my #34 game.

AlanH said:
- the crashes really shouldn't happen.

Rather than take up space in this thread, p'raps you'd PM me or take it to the Mac installers thread

Im not sure what the issue is/was, I talked to my roommate and he said he didnt have a problem with #35 after he did the .flc fix. So Im kind of at a loss, and since there were no issues with #36 Ill just have till I see those civs again to see if the issue/s are still there.

Thanks for the details. I'd forgotten about the Viking flic file issue - that one jumped up and bit us having lain dormant since about GOTM 21 :hmm:

The main concern seems to be your crashes in 35. I'm pleased that they are not happening in 36, but concerned that there may be a problem waiting to happen again.

FWIW I've just released a new installer that *ought* to install everything you need to play the current games. It's a big download, but if you want to try it on a fresh Cv III installation I'd be interested in the results ....

Ill give it a shot on #37, I was so pleased with the lack of issues in 36 that I finished it up pretty quickly. :goodjob:

Ill be reformatting a new hard drive between now and then too, so that will give a good excuse to. Though I just noticed that in my QS G4 under X2.8 that only 128gb is showing on a 160gb HD  so gonna take it back for something not as lacking.
