Machine and Gattling Gunners

Furthermore, you can't even place improvements outside of your territory anyways.

only forts

Why are they giving the citadel a culture bomb ability, aren't they powerful enough already? For one thing the AI will not use them properly, which makes the human player have a huge unfair advantage. I mean the AI does not even build regular forts let alone citadels. Unless it actually does now, and if so, not spammed and scattered all over the countryside.

I watched the video, but I am still not sure if I like the idea.

It came from here: http://videos.pcgames.de/hdvideo/8347/Civilization-5-AddOn-Gods-and-Kings-im-ueberblick
At about 3:50 on the citadel mouse-over it says:

Edit:
I made a little screenshot (don't mind the 'PL' of 'PLAY' in the top-right :p )

Thank you!
I speak German as well so the video was another treat as well.

Citadels are going to continue to be interesting. In multiplayer games I tend to get quite a decent amount of great generals and this will help a lot. Being able to set up a series of citadels grabbing both territory and with the added length of battles is going to make things more interesting. Added with the Great Wall and its effect (which I like for my multiplayer games of being able to blitz a city and then kill off surrounding units rapidly) You could use Citadels to push fronts to a much greater extent. Setting up a Citadel could be the perfect buffer you need to start a high tension war (using land/great wall to protect ranged units) and giving you the ability to overwhelm positions further.

For singleplayer I agree with Nokmirt. AI never used forts and citadels they couldn't use and if they used were ineffective. I hope the AI (everything ultimately comes down to this) can handle this.

I think they are trying to make them more useful, because right now I almost never use them. It's very rare that I am attacked in one place for long enough to justify building Forts, much less spending a Great General to build a Citadel.

I`d usually wait until I had an artist to carve out a nice patch of territory near the border before dropping a citadel on it anyway. This sounds pretty cool for the GG. Relegating Golden Ages to artists would stop Persia from having near-constant Golden Ages.

I generally end up building a few citadels. But mostly that's because, if I'm in combat mode, I'll probably have more generals than I can use before long, so popping out a fort at least gives me something for them.

Citadels are very useful when you conquer cities near city-states that happens to be in war with you and you don't want to spend too much units to counter-attack the waves of units that they usually send to attack your cities . But usually,I only do this with my 2nd GG .

Interesting that Citadels now have this Culture Bomb effect. I wonder if we can only place them in our territory or next to our borders, ala Culture Bomb. I've been wanting some kind of Colony where I can go off and snag a certain strategic or luxury resource without having to build a city there. Maybe this will work for that, but probably not~

The text says that the Citadel must be within one hex of your borders, so it seems pretty clear that you can place them just outside your territory, like a culture bomb.

Is that unoccupied territory or does it work on the lands of another civ aswell?

As discussed above, we don't know for sure, but it seems likely that it would follow the current rules for the Culture Bomb (which is, the target hex can only be in your territory or in neutral territory within 1 hex of your border.

I always thought you could only Culture Bomb within your own borders.. and not outside of it?

As long as the Great Artist is adjacent to your borders, you can Bomb outside of your borders. But no more than 1 hex away from the border.

Spoiler :
In this example, if your borders are red, you can culture bomb the yellow tile and take the ones that are in orange.

Awwwww man! I've wasted SO many Great Artists.. but then.. does that apply to only neutral lands? so If my Artist is on Hiawatha's land, but a right beside my own borders. can I still bomb it?

No, can't be done on enemy land. Either within your own borders or in neutral territory.

This is why my first game will probably be as China. With their great general UA, and the ability of Chu-ko-nu (and therefore gatling/machine gunners) to attack twice in one turn, I can see them being pretty good on defense.

I am very exited about the machine guns. As cool as some of the other units are, there is just something about the good old fashioned machine gun; its proably why the MG is the only weapon that is still in use by modern armies, with virtually no changes in 100 years.

I hope that MG's will have a huge bonus against cavalry, just like they did in WW1 by mowing down cavalry charges with ease.

MG's should also have anti-aircraft capabilities (only against WW1 era planes). In WW1 it was very common for planes to be shot down by ground based MG's. By WW2 the planes flew too high and fast.

I played a game on king against Japan and there was a path between 2 mountains that led to Japan's capital and it was heavily gaurded. I laid a citidel down and planted a machine gun there and it survived and leveled up and got increased range. when I placed an anti aircraft unit next to the machine gun, japan quit using planes and eventually asked for peace
