March Patch Notes (formerly february)

Another thing I've noticed is you can't save your "free policies" from wonders anymore (if you had "save policies" checked in advanced setup menu). You have to take them when you build the wonder.

Well, at least they fixed some stuff correctly.

They also really skipped over a lot of basic bug issues such as the fact that players can sell a luxury to the AI, pillage the tile, rebuild, and resell to the same AI for unlimited cash flow.

This appears to have been fixed. I have a warrior on an improved marble in my territory and "pillage" is no longer an action that can be performed - the button isn't even there.

I haven't playeed it yet, but the new patch seems to be a giant leap for Firaxis, at least comapred to previous ones.

It's a whole new game.

Overall, I think the update is really good, but man, I wish I could have finished the game I was on with the old rules before all the changes came along. Played for a few hours last night and the changes have given me some significant advantages that I didn't have and didn't necessarily deserve before.

I'm looking forward to starting the next game and playing with the new rules from the get go.

Am I crazy, or are several of the tech icons different? They seem a bit sharper and more interesting than before.

The icon for engineering's changed. It used to be a picture of an aquaduct, but since they're using that for the new building now, they had to change it on the tech. I don't know about any others though.

Only played part of a game on prince, but even then the AI seems to gang up against the human player as soon as you get the slightest hint of a lead in the game. I never had a war with anyone and played nice with all my neighbors. Still all I'm doing is building military units for the inevitable wars I will soon be fighting.

Just a very early observation, but I just don't get the feeling that diplomacy is a valid option. I was only a few points ahead of the other civs so it wasn't like I was a massive

Ok a tragedy has occurred: my work blocked this website! is there anyway to download discussions to a pdf or somethign I can save and email to myself at home so I can use it offline?

Not seeing that here... started a "fresh post-patch from scratch" game last night, my turn to be Rome (still working down the list of civs, in order)... went the Tradition/Piety route (didn't need liberty as I'd appropriated/"Liberated" a number of workers from barbies and had gobs of grassland cows for building quick settlers) and quickly went to 4 cities before unhappiness slowed my roll, until Coliseums, then cranked out 3 more, now at 7 well developed core cities @ around 1000 AD, and bouncing between 2nd/3rd on the score list with 2 "unmet players" on the other (what I'm assuming, random map) continent. In the process of building my first Caravel off an RA'd Astronomy to go find them.

Of my neighbors...

Alex (to the NE, Tundra-esque start) HATES my guts. Hates me hates me hates me. Could be because I plopped a settled down in a wooded valley with 2 iron resources about 3 turns ahead of him, and then when he turned that settler downriver toward the 2 horses and ample flood plains, plopped ANOTHER one down about 2 turns ahead of him for the horses and a GP farm. Has denounced 3 times, told me not to buy tiles, told me not to settle, didn't like my response of "get bent". To bad, so sad, but don't worry, Alex, you'll be seeing those horses and iron soon enough. (As an aside, I had an insult I hadn't seen before from him, something about him hearing my people whining all the way over in his lands. Quite amusing, really).

Ramses II (To the south, space for 1 good 4 spaced city between our capitals, settled by me east to west along our border) is "Guarded", but seems to be going for a culture win, has built a bunch of wonders, but not really expanded a whole lot... I'm just letting him build wonders for me while I gear up for Alex, and will then go claim those wonders afterward. He'll pay full price for open borders, a good fair amount for resources, and do straight-up RAs, but won't do a straight-up "lux" trade, he wants the wheels greased with either an OB or some caish on my part.

Askia (To the Southwest, pretty far off but he's settled out to me now, on a closed border) is "Friendly", full and open trades, no animosity.

France (Somewhere in the mists beyond Egypt) is "Friendly" as well, with no issues.

In this game, I settled pretty aggressively, first going south to claim the land between me and closest Egypt, and then east-northeast to claim land that Alex was trying to extend into. Despite that, half of the known world is "friendly", and the half that's not, has a reason to not be. Hard to ask for more than that.

So far I like what I see. In my game last night I was still unable to complete the road request. The road was clearly completed yet it wasn't recognized and remained the only request by Vienna throughout the game.

That's good news. I am right smack in the middle of a continent in that game and surrounded by everyone so that might be part of it. It just felt familiar that everyone flipped from friendly to hostile so suddenly for no reason.

This iteration (V) the AI has seemed to always have a thing for not liking the score leader, or the tech leader. I think it's part of their programming that they want to win, so eff whoever else is winning.

It's probably helping me fly a little under the radar that there's an AI on the other continent who's technically slightly ahead of me, even if it's only by 20 points and a tech...

The declaration expirations are jarring, but it does seem to work fairly well. Civs tend to develop into cliques that hate each other, so even when one declaration/denouncement expires, it tends to be repeated since they still have others active with the same cliques to sway their opinion back in line.

My next big wish for this game is for trades and declarations to not expire automatically if both parties wish to renew them, but rather just be cancelABLE instead of canceled.

Also, it seems that Civ - and all games on Steam for that matter - load slower starting around 12am pacific time until around 2 am. Again, might just be me.

China's just woke up and these Internet proxies that they work with are rolling along the Fiberwires - as usual. And the US, well after the Football game is over why not stay up overnight as well.
Hijacking the Bandwidths by shear numbers! Or spreading spam, you do the math.

Now that balance work is mostly complete (at least what's possible with the existing modding tools) I've been shifting focus to enhancing the user interface like BUG did for Civ 4. There's been a lot of advancement with this in the "Civ V Unofficial Patch" part of the download.

Contact Onni_the_Willard for collaboration, it's either alternatives or the real McCoy here Thal.
:D
Gosh, we're fast.
