Masonic mutterings

From time to time albeit less frequently now I am approached as to if I would like to join the Masons. Indeed one of my relatives is some sort of Masonic bigwig, (grand wizard with pointy hat or somesuch thing). On the whole the people who have approached me over the years have in my opinion joined for reasons of social climbing / networking. Personally I find the whole idea of joining a semi secret club of people who look out for each other not very appealing and a tad ludicrous.
Does anyone have an opinion on the Masons and their place in today’s society?

How do you dare to talk if you were asked to join and to spread it in public!
It is a SECRET club for something!
So our wifes do not know anything while we go to the NOSAM bar and get ourself drunk!
becuase SECRETS are our main objective!
 ;)
Masons pfffffffffff join them, kill them, rule the world

Dont the Masons run the police forces in the UK?
The popular belief is that their members include many influential people including police officers. I believe that a upon joining the force a police officer has to publicly state that he is a member.

@dp
...and the Army. My uncle was in the army, and his c/o asked him to join. My uncle told him where to get off, and he was told that he wouldn't rise much higher if he didn't join. Sure enough, he never got past Major. Don't know what it proves, but that's what his c/o told him.

polymath, I read a book a few years ago about Masonic influence in UK law enforcement, unfortunately my memory is a little sketchy. Wish I could remember the name of it. But I recall accounts that were just like what happened with your uncle. There was even a theory about how the Jack the Ripper case was never solved because the killer was a Mason.

I wish i could join the masons- that would be sweet

It's a society of people who share a common philosophy and ideas. They use rituals and such to represent that philosophy, just like a great many societies and religious institutions. I don't see the point, but let them do whatever they like.
The conspiracy theories about them are what's ludicrious. It's a repeating symptom of all times - when people see a secret society they immediately think there must be something fishy about it.

Didn't masons build the USA?

yeah, masons were basically responsible for creating the US, and trhe US is based on its (and not christianitys) teachings and institutions

Nope it fosters and creates Bigotry and is outdated.
It should be outlawed or least laws brought it to expose these people.

Any club/group that promotes its own way of thinking on others and disadvantages
people is inherently wrong.
A bunch of people who worship the devil they should be cast to the trash can of history.

Sound like the US today,

Ever heard of concepts like religious freedom, or freedom of society?
All your statements are wrong. Freemasons do not 'impose' their way of thinking on others, do not disadvantage other people and do not worship the devil (whoever that is). Your statements would hold more truth for religions like Christianity or Islam. It's you who is the bigot here.

ummm... well there maybe a little problem for you there Curt. I gather one has to pledge allegiance to God and the Queen when you join. ;)
