Mass Effect 3

Well of course. American revisionism at its best.

From a video of the leaked xbox360 demo (which is hilariously unfinished so there is no point in actually watching it, also spoilers (that we already sort of know).

There are three game modes, two of which are completely silly and only help perpetuate the stereotype that console gamers are dumb.

Action Mode automatically chooses story conversations, normal difficulty and "maximizes action". (Why the hell would anyone want to choose this? It isn't like it is difficult to quickly pick the story options and skip through the dialogue).
Story Mode enables the easiest combat difficulty (why not just choose easy in the options?).
RPG Mode is the normal/how it should be game mode with normal difficulty.

The video chooses Story Mode and then after choosing his name (and what has yet to be added, character profile/face stuff I assume) is taken to an options screen where you can choose the difficulty, conversation choice level and various other game options. This makes offering the three different modes completely pointless since it seems you can change all of the settings they set anyway. Also apparently "United States" is now a language.

Maybe people really are that stupid, I don't know. I guess with all the publicity and the money they make by selling so many games, it means all kinds of people buy the game, with various levels of "giving a crap" about all the options, and various levels of attention deficit disorder. I don't know. So of course we must cater to the lowest common denominator instead of forcing people to use their brains.

As for United States being a language, how many websites have you gone to where the first step is to click on a flag to choose your location? It's usually a US flag for North America.

The thing with Bioware games is that the 'English' option during installation is a Canadian flag.

Modes: I don't mind. Better to make an easily (un)selectable 'dumbed down' option than to design the whole game around 'Action Mode'.

Yeah, the demo isn't really concerning. Insert cheap shot about the typical 360 gamer and "Action Mode" here.

What is concerning is the fact that I now have to engage in a complete media blackout because of the leaked story files two days ago. Apparently a Microsoft security failure again.

That makes even less sense then, Maniacal. Maybe they're catering to their neighbours.

It's now official that ME 3 won't require a permanent internet connection, only one time registration, and according to people who have taken a look at the code, Origin is less spywarey than I feared. I guess I'll get it after all.
Now since I don't have any old saves and only finished ME 2 once I'll spend this weekend with ME 1. Male Shepard, Sentinel Paragon, all sidequests. Should take me 15-20 hours without pointless exploration.

You know what was real fun ?
Hunting for a DLC key for bring Down the Sky after reinstalling ME. It's not on the Bioware site and you can't register the game anymore. The only way is to ask EA's customer support.
On the bright side, once I figured that out it didn't take long.

Which DLCs should I buy for Mass Effect 2? I'm thinking of getting Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival, but I might be open to Overlord and Kasumi's Stolen Memory.

Also, I find the Bioware Points system absolutely ridiculous. If I bought all 4 of the above DLCs, it would cost 2480 points, but EA only sells them in increments of 800 at $10 each. So I'd have to pay $40 for 3200 points to get those DLCs, and have 720 points left. Why can't they do it logically and price each DLC with a dollar amount?

Gonna steal what Dachs says before Dachs has a chance to chime in: LotSB is excellent. Arrival and Overlord are pretty good too. Kasumi you can get for free if you get the game new (Owen's comments: learned that the hard way); it's not particularly necessary, but Kasumi is a useful teammate and her loyalty mission is rather interesting.

As Owen pretending to be Dachs I say: suck it up and get them all :p

It's Zaeed you get for free with a new copy of Mass Effect 2. Unless you're getting some special deal, Kasumi is a to-pay DLC. In my opinion: Lair of the Shadow Broker is definitely worth it. Kasumi, kinda. If you're not tight on money, go for it. Haven't tried Overlord. Arrival is meh.

I've been meaning to replay ME1 but I hate the gameplay in that so much that I keep putting it off. Not like the story is really all that worth it either; and even to this day, the graphics look blurry as hell (PC version was poorly ported I guess) and the sound glitches out for almost every weapon. Dunno if I'll even bother. May as well just download a save from masseffectsaves.com since that way I can avoid all of the grueling sidequests.

I want a picture of Jack in ME3.

Oh yeah, that's right. And meh, they're well and away better than ACII's DLC which is good enough for me. And they don't pull any crap like making it impossible to get 100% comp. rate without DLC either.

Just get Lair of the Shadow Broker, don't bother with the other DLCs as you can just watch them on youtube and get the same effect for better value for your money (they are very overpriced for their content). Although I really liked Kasumi.

We have one, sort of - we have a sketch of her from the artbook that comes included with the N7 Edition (previewed recently in a video clip). She has hair.

On the non-free DLC (360/PC Version):

1. Lair of the Shadow Broker
Why: Advances the plot. Does it well: appropriate amounts of lulz and drama. One of the better boss fights in the game from a gameplay perspective; one of the better boss fights in the game from a "this is awesome" perspective. (Those are separate, by the way.) Cleans up the Liaramance and returns it to its (rightful ;)) place as the best romance option for either Shep (especially Femshep). New level design philosophy (especially apparent on the Shadow Broker's ship) showcased, prototypical for ME3.

2. Kasumi: Stolen Memory
Why: New squadmate, new squadmate, new squadmate. Opens up tactical variety with flashbangs. Kasumi herself is roughly as valuable as Miranda, with equivalent debuffs (Overload/Shadow Strike instead of Overload/Warp); Kasumi is somewhat glitchier and can't do Warp bombs, but Shadow Strike is a slightly better debuff than Warp and flashbangs are overall much better than Slam. The Locust is a revolutionary SMG and changes the way every class except Soldier works. Storyline is decent. Mission is of decent difficulty: two YMIRs, a semi-difficult warehouse fight, and the battle on the landing pad add up to probably the most challenging pre-Horizon engagement in the game.

3. Arrival
Why: Advances the plot immensely and provides the immediate background for ME3. Improves on level-design elements from LotSB. The Object Rho fight is one of the most challenging single fights in the game; everybody who plays ME3 ought to play it at least once with a Claymore Vanguard on Insanity. In addition, forcing Shepard to fight on her own requires you to develop an entirely different tactical approach, which is fruitful if primarily from a self-examination perspective. (For instance: a Soldier build that revolves around squad debuffs from Warp and Overload does not have a particularly easy time.) Downsides: not a whole helluva lot of choice in how everything turns out; not particularly funny.

4. Overlord
Why: Interesting look at Cerberus and the geth. Plot is very well done, maybe even the single best of any of the DLC (excepting LotSB). Pretty much the definition of DLC: something that doesn't really detract from the overall scenario if not done, but which is internally fun and well-created. Genuinely funny in many places, but also fairly ominous depending on the point of time. Probably could've used more actual fighting: arguably the toughest bit of combat is the first part of the DLC. Downsides: brings back the Hammerhead.

5. Weapons/Armor Packs
a. Firepower Pack
Why: Mattock, Geth Plasma Shotgun, and Phalanx. Of those, the Mattock is amazing (and arguably game-breaking in the hands of a Soldier), the GPS radically upgrades the power of your squadmates, and the Phalanx is either a novelty or a game-breaker depending on who you ask.
b. Aegis Pack
Why: The Incisor is the single best sniper rifle of the game for your squadmates, firing a three-round burst effective against shields and barriers with all three shots basically guaranteed headshots. It kinda sucks if you're using it yourself - the three shots usually don't all connect, and the gun has ridiculously low ammo for the damage it deals. The Kestrel armor is pretty cool and is a real, tangible upgrade for the Vanguard and to a lesser extent the Soldier.
c. Equalizer Pack
Why: Neither of the headsets is particularly stylish, and the bonuses aren't good enough to make me want to give up the (non-DLC) Kuwashii Visor or the (Dr. Pepper DLC) Recon Hood. Inferno Armor is really mostly good if you want to look like a weirder version of Iron Man. Not a fan.

6. Alternate Appearance Packs
a. Alternate Appearance Pack II
Why: Of the new skins, Miranda's is objectively awesome, providing a completely different look from either of the previous catsuits. Tali's is pretty okay, and since I like chrome and quarians putting the two of them together is dandy in my book. Grunt's doesn't make a whole lot of sense - why add a visor to his suit, especially one that can clip annoyingly? - but it's not terrible.
b. Alternate Appearance Pack I
Why: Garrus' skin is the only quality one here, chiefly because it eliminates his annoying suit damage. Jack and Thane both suffer from CSI: Miami syndrome, wearing shades that mostly are just annoying.

Arrival is also super linear and doesn't add anything to the rest of the game, so it really isn't worth paying that much for. Unless you are completely obsessed with the game and can't get enough, just watch it on youtube. overlord isn't bad, but it isn't much better bang-for-your-buck-wise.

The Firepower pack is actually good though.

Yeah, I will admit, I am kind of a tactics/builds junkie, so the Arrival fights hold a lot more appeal for me.

Uh...okay? That's nice? So what?
