Math01 - My first SG: OCC Space Race

The colony's like this. (R = russian city, J = japanese city, C = colony, | = current border, x = none of the above)

Rx|Cx|xJ

To take out the colony, the Russian town would need to expand once or the Japanese twice.

Renata

Our colony will be engulfed by Japanese culture when Vladivostok expands. Vladivostok and Matsuyama have both expanded within the last 15 turns, so we can be sure that Japan is actively building culture. Currently, Vlad has somewhere between 10 and 40 culture, possibly more if there is already a Cathedral, which I will assume is otherwise currently under construction.

Best case scenario: 10 culture, no cathedral soon, Vlad expands in 45 turns.
More likely scenario: 20 culture, cathedral in 15, Vlad expands in 25 turns.
Worst case scenario: 40+ culture, cathedral complete, Vlad expands in 12 turns or less.

There are a total of 6 source of coal in our world. Sumeria has one, as do the Mongols, the latter of which is currently not connected. Japan has 3, none of which are connected. If we lose the coal before our rails are complete, we should be able to buy it from Japan. We may need to send our workers in to connect an extra source, though.

Didn't even know Vladivostok was Japanese. Teach me to work off of memories from three turnsets ago. :D

Renata

Nice, Mathias, it looks like we'll be ok then, although a bit of speed is probably in order. Renata, if it helps, you could get out workers every turn; it'll shrink London, but she'll grow back fast enough. The extra worker turns might be useful...

Edit: x-post...

I edited my previous post. I agree, worker every turn until we have 12 is a good idea.

I need a skip, sorry. I was hoping to play tonight, but got home from work too late. That was my last chance til Sunday. Blech.

Have fun, whoever's up.

Renata

Bummer.

ChuckDizzle, I believe that is you. If you have any questions, please post. The trades now are important.

It's been a day and a half since Renata requested the skip. Someone needs to play here...

Renata, it's still on you if you can play Sunday. If not, I'll take it myself Sunday night unless either CD or Kahn speaks up.

Ok, I got it.

1150 AD (0): Move the worker off the hill to the pollution. Trade steam to Japan for iron, WM, military tradition. Industrialization to the Zulus for nationalism, etcetera. Industrialization to Sumeria for 129gpt/17g. If we switch our three taxmen to scientists, we can reduce science one notch for Electricity still in 3. Upgrade our spearmen, whoo.

IT: Cleo wants an alliance vs Zulu. I don't think so, Cleo. I do gift her military tradition. Hah, how funny! A source of iron just popped up in our territory. Unfortunately it can't be worked by the city. Wonder who lost it ...

1160 AD (1): Buy spices from Japan. It's Shaka who lacks iron, but he has nothing to offer for it. Start in on the worker builds.

IT: Sumeria starts Suffrage.

1170 AD (2): zzz

1180 AD(3): Start replaceable parts at 100%. 8 turns.

IT: Fukushima borders expand. Our coal colony is in a little 2-tile box. Quite silly-looking.

1190 AD (4): zzz

1200 AD (5): Since I'm railroading before mining, our population is barely even dropping with all these worker builds. It won't go below 17 or 18.

IT: Arequipa borders expand.

1210 AD (6): zzz

IT: Hakodate borders expand.

1220 AD (7): Up to ten workers.

IT: Zulus and Egypt sign peace. Inca want MPP, I think not. Since they're only polite, though, I buy horses for 5gpt and get them up to gracious. Zulus start Suffrage. Would be nice if the remaining middle ages wonders got built sometime soon so we'd have a better idea what we were dealing with with the cascades.

1230 AD (8): Japan now has Ind. That was pretty fast.

1240 AD (9): Worker #12 comes off the line. Start coal plant.

1250 AD (10): RP --> Sci Meth in 6. Lots of money out there to trade for corporation, but no new techs.

1255 AD (11): zzz

IT: Japan starts Uni Suff.

1260 AD (12): zzz

IT: Ok, here goes one wonder. Satsuma finishes Magellan's.

1265 AD (13): London back to size 20.

IT: Sumeria finishes Smith's.

1270 AD (14): Railing and mining complete. London will grow one more time in 7 turns for a specialist. Coal plant complete. Start on Uni Suff as potential prebuild. We're at 88spt -- 7 turns total to build ToE. Sci meth is due in 3; that'd leave us four turns with no research if we build it now, because we wouldn't be able to get another tech in just four turns. More on that below.

1275 AD (15): Start building some barricades for lack of anything better to do with our workforce.

No new techs discovered. I haven't given away corporation, assuming AIs would be going for the government techs anyway, but nothing's turned up. The amount of money available for corp from various civs hasn't really changed in the last few turns, so they don't appear to be researching it. My guess is they wouldn't go for refining or steel anyway, if we gave it to them. We still have electricity as a buffer between us and losing ToE, so we may be able to research at least one additional tech before building ToE -- needs discussion.

The cascades are still in effect in a big way, with three civs building Uni Suff and everybody building Bach's. It'd take investigating about ten cities to figure out how and when that'll shake out, at 150 or more gp per city. Not an impossibility, but expensive.

Russia and the Inca absolutely need to get industrialization soon, lest Japan get even massively stronger than they are. Japan came up with industrialization on their own rather quickly (~ 7 turns @ 4th); they may be the most powerful researching civ in the game right now.

That's all for now. Next player should take care to keep up lux and resource trades to keep everyone happy. Better we pay for those in gpt.

It's ChuckDizzle's turn I think, so he has until tomorrow night CET... Sorry, I've been away this weekend.

Build stock exchange first (complete in 2 turns). We can research Steel in 8 turns, so put one turn on wealth before starting ToE to synchronize wonder completion with research. Obviously we want Atomic Theory and Electronics from ToE. We can queue the research for the rest of the IA as there is only one path to follow: Steel-Electronics-MotorTrans-Flight. Look for trades in 5 turns when Sumeria has finished paying for Ind.

You mentioned steel and electronics twice. :coffee: ;)

Renata

Chuck hasn't posted in this thread in eleven days, including well more than two days while I was out of commission and he was supposed to be up. Should we just skip?

Renata

Renata said:

That was intentional. I was saying that we could queue the research now, while we are still researching SM.

Yes, Chuck will be auto-skipped. I believe Kahn was implying that he would take it tonight.

Math01 1275AD
(0) 1275 AD
Switch London to Stock Exchange due in 2 turns. Lower research to 80%, SM still in 2.
(1) 1280 AD
Renew Gems trade with the Zulus for 5gpt.
Build barricades. Zulus got Communism.
(2) 1285 AD
Scientific Method – Steel. London SE – wealth.
I like those barricades, we can soon live in a waterworld. The Japanese got Fascism and traded for Communism. Russia got Fascism and Industrialization. Sumer the Govt techs.
(3) 1290 AD
Ctrl-F all around. Will trade in 2 turns. London wealth – ToE.
(4) 1295 AD
Bla
(5) 1300 AD
Renew RoP with Sumeria and Russia for the same 3gpt. We have no more Iron.
(6) 1305 AD
London grew. Mongols building Suffrage. Pollution.
Zulus are researching The Corporation. I sell it to the Sumerians for 195 gpt, 245 g and WM. Russia gives 71gpt and 30g. Then to the Japanese for Coal, 45g and 15 gpt. Zulus give 9 gpt and 16g. The AIs are officially broke when I sell around the WM. And love us a lot. Research to 90%
(7) 1310 AD
Buy back Japanese spices for 6gpt. Incas finish Bach’s in Cuzco. The world switched to US. Pollution.
(8) 1315 AD
Temujin has 18gpt to give for the Corporation. Why not. The WM he adds is worth about 100g. Lower research again.
(IBT) Renew 2 lux deal with Temujin.
(9) 1320 AD
Bla
(10) 1325 AD
Steel, ToE, Atomic Theory and Electronics come in. London set on HydroPlant. Research Refining.
(11) 1330 AD
Finish the newest attraction park near London, Water World. The participants in this SG are exclusive shareholders. Let’s hope we won’t face aggressive buy out offers from the AI.
Trade our WM around for 50g (Gave Fine Arts to Egypt for theirs). Of course, it has a huge ad for our leisure park printed on the back.
(12) 1335 AD
Sumeria offers MPP for 5 gpt. Though cheap, I prefer to reject it.
Renew Incense deal with Russia (same old 6gpt). Send our 12 workers in Water World as gratitude for the good job they’ve done.
Japan and Zululand sign MPP. Notice that since the opening of Water World we had no pollution. Or it’s under water?
(13) 1340 AD
Renew silks and horses deal for 5gpt each. London hydro plant – civil defence, I forgot it’s name in English. Never useless.
(14) 1345 AD
Nothing much. No AI is researching, we pull most of their income.
(15) 1335 AD
Civil defence is in; I set London on Rifle for upgrades. I prefer them veterans and see nothing more to build.

This is for the notification. Turns played.

Very nice. I don't have much time, so I only looked briefly at the save. Japan will give us any two of their three techs for Electricity, whereas Sumeria won't give either of his strait up. I think we need to sell now. There is plenty of gold out there too, I'll take a closer look when I play tonight. I'd like to hear other opinions on building riflemen. Veteran status is mostly irrelevant if we keep only a few units, but if we want to consider an aggressive move for modern resources, now is the time to prepare.

No time to think too much about it, but I don't think we want to tangle with any of the civs on our continent. Japan for obvious reasons, the other two because we'd have to ally Japan and risk them overrunning the whole landmass. That leaves the islands as fairly easy targets if anything pops up there, with maybe one of the backward civs as a backup plan.

I've never done this sort of game before -- in your experience, how hard does the modern age get?
