[NFP] Maya First Look

The only risk is poor placement. But assuming the AI has a build preference for observatories and archers, Lady Six Sky is going to be a real AI devil. They don't need xbows - deity bonus+near capital+wounded target is already 42 strength.

Yep, as long as the AI doesn't mess up the Observatory placement, they should be a in a relatively decent shape. The AI will often settle cities away from fresh water, but also spam a lot of farms, so that should work out for the Maya.

That's fair, I just like for leaders to look good. It's an entirely selfish desire for more Tomyris-ish eyecandy.

Tomyris is gorgeous, but honestly so is Six Sky. Not being sarcastic: I find her very pretty.

That's exactly why I mostly don't want to use definitive statements like "is beautiful/ugly". I don't think Six Sky is portrayed as ugly, and I think she looks appealing. Tomyris is not ugly in my eyes either, but I don't care for her looks whatsoever from a standpoint of attraction.

To each their own, so I'm really happy we get a diverse cast showing all kinds of people.

This is such a weird way of saying "Firaxis are biased against a civilisation in some unspecified way".

Nobody everybody fits into classical Western concepts of beauty (and fitness). This fact only gets more evident as you track back through history, because the baseline even in Western countries has changed over the centuries.
People were uglier, stinkier, and often sick- essentially leaky bags of various bodily fluids. They also tended to have crooked teeth (albeit usually pretty healthy due to low sugar diet)

Sedentary people like rulers could absolutely put on some weight. Go look in museums at old armor and you’ll see some kings definitely enjoyed their fair share of food.

I for one am happy firaxis has anachronistically applied orthodontics so we don’t have all these buck teeth kings with pox scars running around.

It depends on how it was coded.

If the Maya packed a bunch of cities around the capital like they should, and you only took the capital, it should flip back fairly quickly.

Not sure why quoted me instead of the guy who was asking the question but ok :P

Grassland tall civ with a bonus for lower production and awesome science.
She’s gonna one shot you with xbows the turn you get archers on deity.

I was actually thinking that the AI would probably struggle with her as long as you can avoid the early rush. I see the AI building a ton of cities that get the penalty and being pretty awful at maximizing the observatories adjacency bonuses, honestly.

For a human player, though... I think I'll take my chances with the observatory - the Seowon may be easier to use, but I think observatories have more potential.

I mean, for the AI, they at least have a few things going for them - +5 near the cap plus presumably archer spam means they're going to be very hard to take. I anticipate the AI is going to place some bad observatories, unless if the AI is able to find "future" plantation spots to maximize future bonuses. But the AI has a tendency to spam farms and settle off fresh water, which should play into their strategy.

The thing I hate about Lady Six Sky is the jade. It really falls flat to me and just looks very plastic-y in comparison.

Seems that Amanitore and Six Sky also have the same idle upset animations, in addition to having the same idle neutral animations. I probably should have expected this, but they probably have mostly the same non-cutscene animations.

Does it matter? The exterior are quite different.

It is extremely offputting, especially given the fact that Firaxis surely had enough resources to give them different animations.

You can call me picky all you want, but that does not change the fact that it appears lazy at best and completely apathetic at worst.

My guess (and hope) is that these animations are only temporary. I'm sure they'll eventually make new ones.

To be fair are there that many ways to look significantly different when tying to stare disapprovingly while holding a long sceptre?

The AI likes to improve resources with their starting builders so if they start near plantations, then I could see them improving those before they place the district, in which case they’d be fine. Although they also like making libraries just as much, and ultimately simply possessing campuses gives them a big leg up. I think that given how terrible Korean AI is at using the seowon is a testament to the fact that normal AI just doesn’t build enough campuses.
They get such hefty bonuses the -15% is immaterial.

Not to mention humans and other AI will need to crack the nut that is their capital region. Those archers are going to be a real pain especially in a garrison.

Yes. They could at least make her holding it in a different way. Please come up with a better criticism of my criticism next time.

Is it, though? Even if it turns out that they're not temporary, I barely ever notice the idle animations now, and in a game sense you're never going to be seeing them at the same time, so provided that they both have different versions of longer animations I don't really see an issue.

How many different ways are there to hold a staff in a manner suitable for the leaderscreen?

As long as the other animations are different, having the same Idle animations seems like a huge non-issue to me. But perhaps that's just a personal thing.

I barely spend that much time in diplomacy anyway, and even less time looking at the idle animations.

I think the Maya could be very good in the AI's hands. Also imagine spawning next to these guys during a diety game. Good luck conquering them when they have their unique archers. They are effectively Crossbowmen in the ancient era if your invading them.
