Mic4 - AWM

OK, got it, but I may not get to play until tomorrow night, I have to go out of town early tomorrow morning. I will probably establish the embassy, just to see their capital. Good to hear we have the FP online already, now all we need is a better gov't and we'll be able to kick off a very efficient Golden Age!

Sumeria is already in Monarchy, so it's known on the other continent. We just need to meet someone else. Alternatively, we could trade for it and revolt now. Since Sumeria doesn't know Map Making, our galley is pretty safe, so I think we should just wait and shut off research. The GL will last for a very long time. :)

What to build next:
1. markets in core cities
2. horsemen. We'll have money to upgrade to knights. swords aren't so great.
3. galleys. We'll need them to invade the other continent.

I start with the diplomacy with Sumeria. First the embassy, their capital is just north of the coast we’ve spotted, size 3, working on an Enkidu (garrison of 3). They have the Pyramids, and a temple. Writing gets us the last turn of Polytheism and their 5g, and then I can see what we can offer for Monarchy. They must have beelined for Monarchy, they are down by 6 techs still, Currency, Construction, and the 4 from Writing (CoL, Map, Philo, Lit). Four of those is still only close for Monarchy, though, and if they (and the rest of their continent) is that far behind, I’d rather let them languish for now, they’ll be that much easier when it is time to deal with them. Interestingly, they have no strategics connected, and only Gems for luxury. Sumeria is the only one building wonders, they are working on ToA and Hanging Gardens, all the other ancient ones appear completed. When I’m done getting my intel summary ;) I declare war on Sumeria.

It takes me a minute to realize we got Feudalism as our free tech. :) Our sword builds are swapped to MDIs automatically. OK, time to run through our cities. Athens swaps from market to Granary, we need to grow some of our cities. Thessalonika also gets a granary, it’s small, but 1st-ring, and lots of developed tiles to work. I’m surprised by the number of cities with no garrison, especially for an AW game, when the AI has galleys partrolling. And half the cities that are garrisoned, are using a sword or a horse, which is better at the front. So I swap several cities to Hoplites, especially those working on galleys. We already have 5, and it’ll be a LONG time before we finish clearing this continent and need to go to the other one. Delphi has no barracks, so it swaps to a harbor, it’ll need more food soon. I will let a couple MDI’s complete, we can use a decent offensive stack to mop up some of these towns. I also upgrade 5 swords to MDI for 150g.

IBT: Jav moves closer to Chichen. Athens-Granary>hoplite, Argos-Hoplite>hop. Our galley in Sumerian waters is lost! :o

130BC (1): Try to use a vet horse to soften up the Jav, but it gets enslaved after inflicting 2hp. Elite archer dies taking another 2hp off. Other elite* archer finishes him, freeing our horse-turned-worker. Elite sword loses 1hp vs. Iro archer in mountains. I swap Delphi back to a galley, we may need to send some more out, now that we lost our one in sight of land.
IBT: Silly AI lands a redlined archer next to my sword on a hill, N of Chichen. Thermo-MDI>Hop, Phar-work>work, Mycenae-cat>cat, Herc-work>work. Lost another galley trying to duplicate the journey. Byz start ToA.

110BC (2): Well, maybe the AI isn’t so silly, as my sword dies attacking the red-lined archer!! But up north, a sword kills an archer on the mountain without a scratch.
IBT: Lose another galley, no luck at sea.

90BC (3): Shuffle a few troops around, move settlers so I can fill in gaps. Lack of garrisons hurts, it’s hard to shuffle troops from one town to another when the backline forces move into a vacant town, there’s no one to shuffle forward. Especially since our size 6’s depend on at least one unit for MP.
IBT: Athens, Thermo, Corinth-hop>hop, Chichen-work>work, Sparta-Duct>Hop, Tikal-Rax>Hop.

70BC (4): Army takes out a Jav in the north. I found Eretria 2N of Pharsalos.
IBT: 2 Byz swords, 2 Mayan archers are moving south through the jungle.

50BC (5): MDI kills a Byz spear to autoraze Heraklia, we get a worker and 9g. Troy is founded SW of Chichen Itza to link our borders better.
IBT: Sparta, Thermo-Hop>hop, Argos-hop>horse.

30BC (6): Still no luck at sea, and no tech movement. I’m starting to think that Sumeria is on an island by itself, they were so far behind. Either that, or their neighbors also focused on the lower part of the tree. Regardless, with no new contacts, and no movement, it could take a long time for Monarchy to fall out of the GL, so I decide to start max research on it. Even at max, we’re giving up 70gpt, but we can get it in 8, and the cash doesn’t help us until we switch anyway.
IBT: Athens-hop>hop, Delphi-Galley>gal, Knossos-hop>hop.

10BC (7): Lose an MDI killing a mayan spear. Army (with help from 2 catapults) kills 2 archers. MDI kills a spear, elite Horse kills a Byz sword, on a mountain, without a scratch.
IBT: Thermo, Sparta, Corinth-hop>hop.

10AD (8): Just move some forces.
IBT: Jav loses 1hp and kills an MDI on a hill. Ephesus-worker>work, lose our curragh.

30AD (9): Elite sword loses 2hp but kills an archer. MDI kills the Jav.
IBT: Athens-Hop>hop, Chichen-work>cat, Tikal-hop>hop, Thes-Gran>Harbor, lose another galley.

50AD (10): I’ve shuffled more forces, but no attacks this turn. Getting forces ready to take the Mayan capital (Bonampak), there’s 4 MDI and an elite archer nearby. Once that and St. Regis are gone, we’ll need to resettle, but we can gradually stabilize and backfill our SW areas, and have only one main front line. Pharsalos is working on a settler, we may want to swap another city over to one as well.

Up north, the horse army and 2 cats, as well as a couple elites and some MDI, have been holding off a steady stream of units. Iroquois just founded Akwesane up there, on ruins of an older town. Mountains and jungles make the terrain tough, and there’s a river hidden in the jungle that slows road movment. At least every town now has at least 1 Hoplite, size6-7 need 2 for MP support. We do need a few more to escort new settlers, but we also need some more offensive units, to react to any landings, so I’ve swapped a couple cities to horses.

Monarchy is due in 4, I think it’s doable in 3 at a slight deficit, that’s what I had before I did my last MM check on the cities, so you may need to adjust the slider. I’d recommend we revolt immediately when we get it, then look for a chance to kick off the GA when we’re done. If we can maintain our defenses, I’d use the GA to really work on infrastructure, we’ve naturally postponed some of that, but we definitely need granaries, markets, some libraries (especially Argos), harbors for coastal towns, etc. We also should discuss whether to wait on the GL, or research up to Chivalry ourselves, we can probably get there quickly (especially during the GA), and the AI is taking forever, I’d rather not count on them.

Just be patient with the GL. We're killing our neighbours right now

So more galleys is the only choice to get somewhere. Or self research.

change Corinth to a galley. We have one and only one more in production. Everything else looks good.

IBT E.Archer defeats reg JT. Byz wants to talk but I pass.

70AD-1 Sparta horse-->horse Thernopylae horse-->settler(size 7) Argos horse-->settler(size 8) Rhodes, Mycenae cat-->cat Move people around. Hire Taxmen in Argos and Tikal.

90AD-2 Athens hoplite-->temple Herakleia worker-->worker MDI promotes to elite on a spear in Bonampak losing 2hp. 2nd loses one hp defeating a JT. MDI promotes on a reg archer near Akwansne. Reg archer kills our elite sword. E. horse kills archer. Taxmen become scientists to drop rate 20% for Monarchy. Knossos added to specialists.

IBT Monarchy arrives and we revolt resulting in riots in Athens. (SIX turns of anarchy!) Massive barbarian Uprising near Ephesus. I had 2 horses and a MDI closing in on that Barb hut.

110AD-3 All three cats miss Akwansne. All is well. The elite MDI kills the reg spear to destroy the town. Kill barb warrior on top of stack. Vet MDI kills last JT in Bonampak. We get 19g and three slaves.

IBT Our two horses defeat all but one barb. The surviving horse is now elite.

130AD-4 Cats are stuck on a hill and are unable to climb back on the roaded mountain? Take two hp off an approaching settler pair. (they fortified on the mountain but my MDI had to heal. They headed for home when the Byz settler arrived in a few turns.) Elite horse takes two hp off Byz spear then dies promoting him. Vet MDI only removes one hp before dying. Horse army loses 4 hp killing the spear. Vet MDI kills a reg archer near St.Regis.

150AD-5 Promote a vet MDI on a reg spear in St.Regis. Cats take two hp from a Byz sword and one from a reg archer. Horse Army kills both.

170AD-6 Elite MDI captures St. Regis. Galley starts journey to the other world.

IBT Galley dies.

190AD-7 Elite Archer kills a spear in Hahnawake.

IBT Eight barb horses show up near Rhodes. Byz settles Sardica on the ruins of Akwansne.

210AD-8 Kill a Byz sword.

230AD-9 Our Monarchy starts. Kill the spear in Sardica but there is a 1hp sword resting there. Kill 5 barb horses. Kill 2 archers near Hahnawake promoting a MDI.

250AD-10 Corinth galley-->MDI Pharsalos settler-->barrack Elite MDI kills swords to take the 8g in Sardica. Lose one MDI attacking Hahnawake but the other is victorius. Only a 1hp spear remains but no one else to attack.

Settler and Galley have not moved. We need to evaluate our builds and find a good use for our 672g and 118GPT.

I have an MDI heading to the southwestern penensula to see if Hi settled down there. I saw a galley go and return. I have a stack of slaves bulding a road under our catapults to bring them home.

We may not meet the other civs until we capture Constantinople and the Great Lighthouse.

Preturn: set research to 70% for engineering in 10. We have a decent pile of cash, and a need for river crossings.
Switch argos' settler build to hoplite. We are not in a farmer's gambit and cannot send a settler out there when we have 1 defender per city already! Map making makes coastal landings possible anywhere.

I see undefended cities, this is not as healthy an army as I would like to see. Move the settler towards the galley, hit enter

IT: Byzantine horse kills our elite MDI flawlessly.

I decide that my goal for this turn is finishing off the mayans, then consolidating

Check our army statistics, this is definitely not the kind of thing I like to see. 20 cities, almost all without basic infrastructure except barracks.
-1 horse army
-3 horsemen
-25 hoplite
-3 mdi
-5 catapults

is our entire army. This is hardly impressive. I will smash the last mayan city and finish my turn as planned, but I strongly recommend that the next 10 be spent consolidating as well. I also reverse my decision on engineering. We will use the cash to buy some basic infrastructure throughout our core, we cannot survive long in the middle ages without temples and markets especially in cities upwards of size 7 and 8, with only one MP in most of our cities. I check our culture advisor, and we have ONE TEMPLE (in sparta), NO LIBRARIES, ands NO MARKETS in our entire empire. I don't know how this could have been left for so long in this game...this would be an excellent time to trip our GA

One thing I am pleased to see is our excess of workers. Other note: stop building them, we are over our gpt already and have 23 native workers + many slaves.

Rush temple in corinth(size 6), argos(size 8) and athens(size 7)

notes:
-troops are in position to attack Kahnawake next turn
-use the hoplites from athens to escort settlers to finish off the southern lands
-the iroquois settler pair that landed apparently hasn't found a home yet, or maybe they got slaughtered by barbs
-we are in our GA for 10+ more turns. Use it to continue our infrastructure program.
-iroquois keep trying to pillage our spices, watch out for them

Summary:
-net military gain of 4 horses, 7 hoplites, 5 catapults.
-mayans are eliminated
-built 14 temples, 4 markets, and 1 library

someone please make a dotmap. We have 2 settlers. 1 is where I believe we should found a city, the other has its moves remaining and should be accompanied by the city's garrison to wherever the next player choses.

Note: uploads server seems to be a bit funky right now, I'll upload the save ASAP.

Good turns Nick, we've needed infrastructure for a while, but I think everyone was waiting to swap governments for the Golden Age. You're right, though, now is the time to build up and fill in, we can then start expanding again once we have a solid foundation.

Preturn: AI have Engineering and Monotheism already, so we do need to plan for libraries. But markets and courthouses first, and military second.

I stop all temples in cities where happiness isn't a problem, which is all of them. I don't see us have happiness problem for a while yet.

Do we have enough workers? Nope. I still see some core cities not fully improved.

I do not know why we are wasting time clearing the valcano damage. I stop them and dispatch for more useful work.

And we actually can found another ring-1 city. The next settler will go there.

IBT we built a reg warrior?

(1)370AD: Kill two spears and an archer, capture Kahnawake.

Stupid Iros founded a new town at the cattle site. Our veteran horsemen run for it.

(2)380AD: Kill 2 Byz swords and an iro archer.

We lose a horse when attacking spear in Chondote (the iro new town), but kill the other. With only a redlined spear in Chondote I decide to attack with hoplite. It wins flawlessly and promotes! So we raze the town.

I change Athens to Heroic Epic in 10 turns.

(3)390AD: some minor killing.

(4)400AD: Kill 3 Iro archers. MDI kills Byz spear/settler. Rush 3 courthouses and short-rush some markets.

(5)410AD: ZZZ

(6)420AD: By our cat stack, our army redlines but kills one reg archer and 2 redlined spears and raze Allegheny. We got no slaves for a size-5 town? A horse loses to archer, and another retreats from it, without scratch!

IBT our redlined 4hp horse army is killed by archer! Sorry.

(7)430AD: ZZZ

(8)440AD: Two elite wins still no leader.

More rushing.

(9)450AD: We finally reached the Sumerian continent again, and we find Byzantines again.

I should stop here to even the turns but I'll play one more turn to capture a town.

IBT we get Engineering

(10)460AD: Kill 2 spear and 1 archer, and capture Caughnawaga.

Our infra is mostly done (courts and markets). We now need more military to take towns. Build horses and save money for knights upgrading. Cats to trebs.

I temporarily set Troy to starving to quickly pump out some hoplites. We have lots of settlers without escort yet.

Sorry to have lost the army. Iro re-founded a town to replace Allegheny.

We reached the other continent but still haven't met any new AI. Looks like Sumeria is really big (almost as big as us). Once GL is obsoleted we need to get Navigation asap to invade it.

Hmm, why build the heroic epic in athens? I would have continued the 1-turn hoplite pump, it's the only city that can do it in our GA.

Sucks about the army :(

how many cities have markets/courts now?
