Military Fortifications, Bunkers, Pillboxes, etc.

Damn, I knew something was wrong with the unit! Now I know - it's the 0.05 inch difference in caliber! Tom, you totally have to re-do this one. Shame on you!

;)

Mr. De Borg, I assume that you are trying to be funny. I have spent a goodly amount of time over the past several years explaining to middle school, junior high, high school, and college students that Wikipedia is not a reliable resource to use. I have a history background, and when someone makes a clear and obvious mistake in facts, when it can be readily checked, any other statement by that individual should be treated with caution. The poster did have the correct photos, which is the basis for the unit. If that armament had appeared in some of the miniature or board war games that I play, every unit rating would have been subject to question, assuming that the players would have even considered the game.

I also included in my post a basic bibliography of fortification that can be used to create units, buildings, and images. I have all of the books in my personal library, and they represent reliable sources for the field. They do not exhaust either the holdings in my library or those available, but they are sources that should be readily available through interlibrary loan here in the US, or by purchase through any of the used book sites online.

He was trying to be funny. Well, he didn't just try. He was funny (YMMV).
But how do we represent a difference of half an inch in-game? All tom has to do is change a few bits of text here and there.

Leave Buzz Killington alone. It's hard enough making friends when you keep correcting them.

I'm not going to the library to rent tons of books for Civ 3; and I certainly cannot afford to buy tons of books either.. just to make little graphics where all the detail is mostly lost anyways at ship scale. Even if it was 5 inches off, you wouldn't be able to tell too much. :) I do wish I could, because I do enjoy military books and reading up on military history, but it just wouldn't make sense; especially since I don't build these from complete scratch; and I don't make them with complete accuracy in mind either.

The .05 inch difference is very small compared to the rest of the model. The model is probably not close to being the actual correct dimensions... Theres even pieces missing completely from the real thing. I can tell by looking at the model compared to actual photos that there was glaring inaccuracies. But I don't have time to measure it out, since it won't ever be seen or noticed; and doesn't really matter that much for me to waste 10 or 20 hours fixing.

In Civ 3's case, Civilopedia is good enough for pretty much anything; because if it's wrong, it doesn't really matter in most cases, because it cannot be seen. If I'm writing a thesis, I'll use information I know is correct. I agree with you though, that in circumstances where correct info is required, not to use wiki as a primary source!

:)

If I may ask, did you correct the wikipedia entry? After all, Wiki is only as good as the info people put into it! I would, but don't have the sources to notate wiki like you do with those books.

I'm throwing together the Maunsell Army Forts.

All together would be made a single direction; with the rotation being in the direction it fires and direction the searchlight tower shines its light. I might make one with a single tower also.

I hate people who bump threads with unnecessary… new graphics… shinyyyy…

Maunsell Army Fort

No Civ Color. I think too much detail on some parts of this / and having to size it down so much made it so it didn't come out quite how I would have preferred; but too much work to redo, so I will leave as is. I'll create a single Maunsell Army Fort also.

That is Totally Excellent Tom... Great Animations and Effects. Love the Search Light and Death Effects :goodjob:

The only thing that could be done would be to have each fire their shots separately rather than all exactly the same... but that is being too particular and anyway, anyone could manually change that using the Storyboard if they wanted to.

alternatively: wait for the single fort to be posted, then make a multi-unit.

An excellent unit as always.

Off Topi: This seems like a really impractical fortification, does it not?

Tom, this is a wonderful unit , but the multiple units file seems a little bit overcrowded for a single tile. There are parts of these multiple units that seem to be placed in neighbouring tiles where no such fortification exists and this can lead to irritations for the player. May be some single sea-fortifications placed in neighbouring sea-tiles will do the same effect, but without the danger of irritating the player. So I hope, you will do the single unit Maunsell fortress soon, so it can be included in the upcoming massive SOE betatest upload.

Attached is a screenshot taken from the graphical update of Rocoteh´s WW II classic "WW 2 Global" linked to the SOE graphics. When you take a closer look to that screenshot you can see, that some of the fortresses seem to stand on land or in the next tile (what they don´t do) and you can also see the great effect of that wonderful searchlight coming with that unit.
