Ndshtsaau or the Mountain Borne
Starting Location:
Society: Their entire society revolves around competition. Competition in anything, from sports to warfare. If they create art, they strive for it to be better than anyone else's. The leaders are chosen by how much Respect (
baudngauki) the individual has. The one who has proven themselves in the most areas is the leader. It is not enough for a challenger to simply beat the incumbent leader in battle, he (or in some cases, she) must also excel in other areas, such as running or actual leadership skills. As a matter of fact, all disputes are resolved using competition in some shape or form.
Lineage: After the Rite of Adulthood*, the morning after the wedding, the two youths are separated, clothed and brought before the highest Baudngaukiaund of the community of the individual's gender. There, they decide their full name. They will keep their childhood name, but will choose a family member's name to complete it and whatever that member is known for. The basics would be [Childhood Name], [relation to namesake (son, daughter, nephew, niece, grandchild**)] of [Name of Family Member], [what he/she is remembered for].
*
Bniau Ondshjijeueund = a week of arduous tests, set up by the most skilled in the village. It is used to see where the individuals will excel most, taken around 17/18, although taking it later is not uncommon. A male/female partnership usually takes it together, helping each other. It is important to choose the right partner, as at the end is a lavish marriage ceremony. And there is no breaking that bond after it has been made.
** If the family member is too far back to be shortened, e.g. great-great-grandfather, 'descendant' is often used.
Values: As mentioned above, being the best at what you do, and being competent at things you don't do is very important. Loyalty is also important, most importantly to your Bond Partner, then your family and then the rest of your community.
Religion: In a society that favours pure achievement above all else (not necessarily having anything to show for it beyond the word of others), hero worship is a big thing. Think of someone who is obsessed with a celebrity, character or franchise. They collect everything that is associated with them, maybe even make a little shrine (doubt they'll call it that though). Then crank it up to 11. People who do truly great achievements (most of the time made up due to their true achievements lost to time and embellishment), such as
Cauobeunnd, who jumped between two mountains are effectively worshipped by whole communities, as individuals ask them for luck in their everyday lives. Another example would be
Bshndeujy, who stored food and fed those who starved in winter,
As with all hero worship, there is a wild difference from community to community. A community might have a granary with a statue of a hero from their history, to commemorate the time when she led the defence of it from marauders. It is expected of those in that community to give a little food to the statue, so she is strong enough to keep defending (only a little, statues don't need much sustenance). But someone from another community might never have heard of her.

Mythos: In the mists of time, The Sun and Moon had competitions. Their first Contest was to create everything that did not live. The Moon won, creating the ground, the water and the air. The next Contest was to create life. The Sun won that one, giving the world it's plants and animals. They were stuck for what to do next.
Then the Great One, whose body was all the stars, came to them and suggested they should make things that could appreciate their work. The Sun and The Moon, by lucky coincidence, made the same thing, but The Moon made man, and The Sun made woman. The Great One saw into the future and found they both won. This made the Moon mad, as he saw as both of them had lost, which he didn't like. The Sun was content, as she believed that they had both won and she watched their little creations as they lived their lives.
And when they go to bed, so does she, which is the only time the Moon comes out. That is why, they reason, the Moon is seen at nighttime and the Sun is seen during the day. And if they see the Moon at day that means that he is waiting for the Sun to leave.
Beyond that, they have no real origin. There is a widely told story that the leader of a tribe that was on the verge of starvation challenged Death itself to spare his tribe. It agreed, and it was the only time Death has ever been beaten. As an encore, this hero, usually called the First Hero, as his actions allowed the Mountain Borne to survive, leapt so high he joined The Sun, The Moon and The Great One, and one can see him on certain nights, his shape in the stars.
Economic Base: At the moment, food. Farming, hunting, fishing, gathering, anything that can be turned into a competition. As food becomes less and less of a worry, things such as mining for raw metals and jewels have become common.

OTL: Actually, my main inspiration was Goliaths from the 4e D&D second player's handbook. They have this big thing about competition. And, as mentioned above, the religion is a take on hero worship, particularly people who are crazy about certain things. Like Twilight fans. Although these guys aren't as crazy. The language doesn't really have any influence, it's mostly just random.
