MNES: The Tides of Change

Update Zero:
A New Dawn
c. Prehistory to Beginning of the Bronze Age

To those who may have been watching Tuoua(Havaltai name of this world), this recent period of time would have seemed to be like all others. Volcanoes erupted lava from their fiery depths, forest rose and fell as wild fires roared amongst them. The clouds flowed to and fro in the sky, swirling in invisible paths, as did the rivers of the land, except guided by routes decided for them eons earlier. The tides came in and out, sometimes spewing over the natural bulwarks set for them. This was how it always was since seemingly the beginning; this was how it was now, and how it would logically occur in the future. However, this time around, there were one thing different, and that one thing, was the explosion of the Homo Sapien species upon the world, who, although unknown to them at the time, could single handedly change the world for better or for worst, but that yet remains to be seen.

Although humans quickly could found in every locale around the world, whether in the far north, or in the far south, all were simple hunter gather societies constantly venturing around the map in their small tribes. In one place however, with a fertile dual river system to west of a seemingly endless mountain range, that hunter gather society gradually changed, for it was found to be much more productive to sow and plant than to search and pick. Within this “cradle”, at the source of the great Paavali River, agriculture was clearly appealing to the tribes located around it, and they quickly took up the practice. The first of these was the Inth, the people, who occupied the Duhhan, meaning the land between the two halves of the Paavali. This fertile ground soon enabled the Inth to become the populous peoples in the world, which quickly allowed the Inth tribes to unite under Kelgohhin to form the first nation, Kelgorohhinth. Furthermore, the treasuries of Kelgorohhinth were quickly filled by the profits reaped from the selling of grain to the tribes that started to congregate around the river for hundred miles north.

(+ The Inth Capital as a EC)

The Inth soon found themselves not to be the only ones who were benefiting from the Paavali however, as both the Acolhnahuacatahkushtal and Emitaru joined the Inth on the delta, to the west and south respectively. The Acolhnahuacatahkushtal were a paradoxical people to outside observers but amongst themselves, things went on as normal as they bickered, argued, and occasionally fought between themselves. Despite their heavy use of agriculture and fishing, which led to a population boom, albeit to a lesser degree than Inth, the closest semblance the Acolhnahuacatahkushtal had of civilization was the many confederations that were formed and disbanded. However, a strong tribe or confederation may soon able to change that. The Emitare were a more normal people, who place much more focus on the individual than there two northern neighbors. However, other than their own population boom due to fishing, farming, and hunting, the Emitaru did nothing of note, which in comparison to their neighbors, may be something of note.(:))

At the delta of the Kevlea, the other major river, the worshipers of Mother Earth, the Iveriz, arose. Their nation of Turdeta quickly expanded to include all of the land east of the Kevlea delta and gradually switched from a hunter gatherer society to an agricultural based one, though their religion still adds friction to the change, despite the evident benefits of agriculture. However, their main source of income and food came from what gathers remained who found a plentiful source of various fruits to their south along the coast, specifically of apples, which they soon started to trade upriver with the other tribes who have gathered along the river and with the Fihn Lov for food and metals. However, the Iveriz have made no attempt so far to secure the source of the fruits, and if a few tribes settle and take control in the area, they may well completely lose this vital resource.

The Fihn Lov developed along the Kevlea River at one of its three sources, Lake Zreva, led by the elders of the 14 families of Olve, the capital of Fihn Lov. The Fihn Lov were strategically located between the Srebigo and the Iveriz as to become the middleman in the trade involving all three. The Fihn Lov gave whatever surplus grain the crops would yield to the Srebigo in exchange for copper and later, tin. They would then trade some of the copper and tin to the Iveriz for their fruits. Olve soon become the center of the most lucrative trading route in the world. The Srebigo were peoples who migrated south from the Hreva Mountains to the edge of the mountains north of Lake Zerva. Forced to take up agriculture along the lake because of a strange shortage of plant life in the mountains, the Srebigo nevertheless still held on to their mountainous roots maintaining their capital on one, which in a stroke of luck, happened to be sitting upon a large source of copper and to the south, of tin, which has since been exploited.

(+ Olve as a TC, + Srebigo Capital as an EC)

Upriver of the Iveriz, the city states of Havalta gradually coalesced. However, once population growth enabled standing armies, the cities descended into conflict until Aino the Great, leader of the city of Havaltai, united the fragmented cities into one. The stability of Aino’s state was secured by the steady income from trading the fine wool of the sheep that originated from Havalta, to those along river to the south, even to the Iveriz. However contact with them has only been just made, and the overstretched trade routes reaching there are tenuous and haphazard at best.

(+ Havaltai as a EC, + Gadiri(Turdeta[Iveriz] Capital) as a TC)

Further upriver at the second source of the Kevlea River, the peoples of Ndshtsaau settled themselves down after many years of nomadic lifestyle in the mountains, but unlike their possible relatives, the Srebigo, the land was more suitable to agriculture, and no need to import foodstuffs was needed. Instead, the need to export was more of a problem until recently. For the Ndshtsaau were seemingly alone in the world, and the large amount of silver being mined out of the mountains to the their west could be used only for decoration as rewards to the winners in the countless competitions that were held between the males and even females of the country.

Directly west of the Ndshtsaau, but on the opposite river, the Ymo settled on a major fork in the Paavali. They are simple farmers who at one time like the Ndshtsaau, believe that they are the only civilization in the world, but this is soon to change.

Lastly, far to the north of any other societies, the culture of the Queki slowly came to be, and amongst the cradle, were uniquely the only people who did not depend on a direct water source to first start agriculture. However, this in the grand scheme of things is relatively unimportant to the population of Queki who instead focus their energies into worshipping their own respective warrior-priests, the Chenche. Each Chenche has their own slightly varied language, and as of late, their own different gods to which they supposedly converse with, but these sects can be still easily generalized under the two major beliefs of Tiuhjuk and Juniljuk. This diversity makes unity seem far off for the Queki, which may or may not have helped by the recent actions of some Chenche who have begun to form individual city states, the most powerful of which are Jure, Kokulen, and Aseneik.

Notes:

Now the NES really starts! Everyone can now conduct diplo and send orders etc. Orders are due Saturday the 4th of July at 6 AM EST time.

I hope everyone likes their own color. If you don’t, tell me what you’d prefer and I’ll change it.

There are currently 3 trade routes. PD = Paavali Delta, SKR = Southern Kevlea River, and LZ = Lake Zreva. Once most countries make contact, there either will be trade routes for each river, or simply one for the entire cradle.

@Ninja Dude, you’re welcome to take any of the Queki city states.

@NWAG3, currently I have you as head of one of the confederations. Let me know if you had something different in mind.

Regarding the quality of the writing in the update, I don’t particularly like it, hopefully I’ll get better over time. (:))

Lastly, the bronze age is just starting in the LZ trade route, hence the tin mining from Srebigo. Expect it to quickly spread to most of the cradle if contact is made with the LZ countries.

Feel free to ask questions! Besides PMs, I also can be contacted via AIM. My screen name is: TheMatt0088.

Great first update Matt- although you called Srebigo 'Serbigo'. ;)

*Engages Jedi Mind Tricks*

There is no Srebigo, there is only Serbigo, the second most powerful country in the world(IIRC), so be happy.

*Realizes that Iggy is immune to such tricks*

Sorry Iggy, I never realized that I miss spelled it. I'll change it later today when I get back on.

Interested.

Satisfactory, but can defections and the like be done properly? A low Confidence is one thing, but it is worth noting that unlike most societies the tribes and even the Confederation "head" (there is no actual head as I originally made it, so I'll treat myself like some sort of "essence") have no problem with secession and consider it a right of any tribe even for stupid and arbitrary reasons.

EDIT:
Sorry to bother you, but I realised you put me down as a "Despotism with occasional Councils". This is not what I wanted- as I said, the Confederation is run in the interests of the Chiefs, and does not actually have a Despot. It is not "occasional Councils", but something closer to a Congress except meeting or commanding their armies at war practically all the time.

Hah, so in doing nothing I did more than my neighbors. :P
The three people clustered around the mouth of the Paalavi River (which in Emitare is Malavie Yasjira) is going to be chaotic.

Nice choice of color by the way, I was going to request green and then forgot about it.

Not bad. I liked the update a lot. I have 1 question: what does the "Overall Score" stat mean? Because if it is what I think it is, then I am the best player so far!

Its just an score about how your nation is overall. Self explanatory really.:)

Ok, when I get time, I'll change that.:)

Whoops, just noticed - it's the Emitare people (of Emitaru), not the Emitaru people. The adjective is Emitare, the noun is Emitaru.

I also protest at being called a despot. The idea of having a leader that cannot be easily removed is laughable in Inth society, for if a leader is unpopular he soon finds all his followers have deserted him and he is left alone in a camp wondering what happened. No leader in Inth society has absolute power and any group or person unhappy with him will challenge him, if they are strong enough, or just leave. This is why I described the Inth as 'village states'. Mark them down as a tribal state please.

How come the stats haven't been changed yet?

Despotism is the default government and unless I see something specifically saying otherwise, I put despotism. Tribal State it is!:)

How come the stats haven't been changed yet?

I was working on the ATLEX1 map.

I have a question: will the next turn be a BT or a IT?

I distinctly remember putting that it was BT in the update, but looking at it again, it seems that that neve made it into the final draft of the update. This turn will be BT, taking us through some or all of the Bronze Age. It will be 500 years, so there is alot of time to do various things. Using Turdeta as an example you could agressively expand to Vo Lov and Havaltai or even past them and still have time for internal affairs or exploration etc. The map will be full of color this turn!:)

@Everyone, don't forget that this is a NES, Never Ending Story, and there's only NWAG's two stories so far. Write some, they help with yourluck and overall performence in the update plus the culture bonus!

Orders sent ^_^

In the small town of Baste, several kilometres away from the capital of Gadiri, several people were entering the small temple that had been built in honour to Gaia, the Earth Mother, for the bi-weekly prayer to Her so that She provided Her children with food and water. Of course, that didn't mean that they would be waiting for it to fall from the sky or to spontaneously sprout from the floor: no, they would search for it, they would hunt for it, and some would cultivate it, but all of them would thank Gaia for providing them with the food they needed to survive.

Everybody shut up as the priest started to talk in the ancient language of the Turdetan people.

"Dear Mother, we meet here in this holy temple dedicated to You and Your greatness, so that you don't forget us when You wake up from Your winter slumber and You provide us with what we need. We will always worship You, spread Your word among the unenlightened and make sure that Your work is never usurped by somebody else."

"Gaia todopoderosa, te amamos, te bendecimos, te respetamos," everybody else said.

Dozens of farmers labored in their fields, picking corn* and throwing it in weaved baskets. Initially the job was easy, picking the corn and happily throwing it into the basket. Many of the farmers hummed a tune or openly sang as they did so. they were happy to please their Chenche, and in turn, please Jun**. For what would they do without their Chenche? Without him, there would be no way to communicate with Jun, no way to ensure they were doing what was right. Just the thought of such a thing sent shivers down many Queki's spines.

But as the farmers labored on, the sun grew bright and hot. Their once happy humming and singing turned into moans and sighs. Beads of sweat fell to the dry dirt and leaves, almost sounding like a gentle rain. But other than the dripping and the occasional sigh and moan, things were peaceful and quiet. And as these people labored, a fat man sat nearby on a hill, two servant girls keeping him cool with colorful fans.

"Halt all of you!," He finally shouted, raising his hand. "I must ensure that you are harvesting just as Jun wills it!"

He leaned forward to get up, but instead of impressively rising in a show of majesty as the farmers expected, he flopped back down into his chair. Cursing and struggling, he finally ordered his servant girls to help him out of the chair. He stood up and stretched his arms with a yawn, and took a step forward. Much to his dismay, he lost his balance, falling down the hill like a brightly colored bowling ball. After much cursing and shouting he finally slowed to a halt near the edge of the crops. Wide eyed and clearly embarassed, he managed to get up by himself and dusted himself off.

"You there!" He shouted. He pointed at a young man, no older than 16. "why do you hold your hand?"

"It got cut on a leave," the man said. "It stings, but I am fine."

"Is there any blood?"

"Well, only a little I-"

"Did any get on the plants"

"Eh...Umm... Perhaps?"

"You fool! Do you relise what this means? You have given one of these plants the gift of human blood! That is a substance more pure and rich than and water these plants could ever get! Now the rest of the plants shall become jealous, knowing one of their kind has been treated better than the others! They may never grow tall again!"

"How may I correct this problem sir?"

"You have done enough. All of you, go back to your homes. I will consult Jun on what to do about this most grave matter."

With that the villagers walked home, all eyeing the man who had the cut on his arm. If it wasn't for him maybe Jun would be pleased today. Who knows what kind of disaster could rip the village apart? But they were at least comforted iin knowing their great Chenche was dedicated to resolving this issue...

The next day all of the villagers were gathered together, called to the center of the village by the Chenche. Once he had seen that everyone had been gathered he quieted the crowd and began to speak.

"My loyal followers of Jun, I gather you here today to announce the results of my discussion with Jun. As you may all well know, one of the plants tasted the blood of a man yesterday, and now the other plants are jealous. They will refuse to grow unless they too all taste the blood of the man. I have consulted Jun and this is what it has told me: The man must be bled dry. His blood is to be sprinkled over the crops to ensure they all grow healthy!"

Many of the crowd gasp, or said prayers, but eventually all turned to the man guilty of starting this whole incident. Slowly a few men grabbed their farming tools and hunting equipment and began surrounding then man. The chenche's will must be done.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Is this okay? I could switch corn with whatever crop would be available.
**Name for the "Heaven" that the majority of the Queki people worship.

'...what in the name of Yasjireme Eryu do you need a squid, horse hair, a bowl, a stick, string and a board for?!'

'I had an idea! Wouldn't it be nice if we could somehow keep exactly what people say somewhere? I know how to do it!'

'You're going to store words. And exactly how are you going to do that? They're not like grain, y'know - you can't put them in a warehouse.'

'You can put them on something - you can draw them on something!'

'Whatever. As long as you pay me for the stuff you're buying, I don't care what you do with it.'

Talhaviru put the basket of fish on the counter, picked up his materials, and walked off.

'Young people these days...' the shopkeeper grumbled.

OOC: I'm thinking of deviating a bit from "canon" on this one, on the premise that this isn't the "real world" but a simulation of Acolhnahuacatahkushtal culture from much later.

The War of the Curi Ilpay Incident

Part 1:
Korganth smiled, as he landed in the new world. One with better hearing would notice two people speaking his language on the shore, but to Korganth that was all a distraction. His focus- his game.

"O.K- culture has agriculture and limited fishing.". Switching to thought, he realised that Robert666 had stuffed up and given him the Auto-Translator. After the Emitaru incident (he made a mental note that he was visiting the same world twice- he would have to speak to Robert about that), that was probably not a good idea.

He pressed an invisible button on his hand. A mental list came up of options. Getting a phrasebook would look ridicolous, and he didn't have the space in his mind for an auto-upload. He'd have to give his avatar agelessness and learn the language the hard way...

One of the few joys in Robert666's life was to "clone" himself and go about the world. After all, it meant he always had someone who agreed with him. With luck, he'd be able to counter Korganth's 'historical variance' more easily. The last time he'd let the kid run amock, the Holy Roman Emperor crowned himself Scourge of God and tried to invade the Americas. How that had happened he had no idea...

"Robert666! Robert666!"
"Yes, Robert666.215?"
"Over there!"

Korganth slowly pushed a log out onto the water, then climbed aboard and carefully tried to keep his balance. Grabbing pathetically for fish, he tumbled into the water. As the Roberts saw but he didn't, a native was carefully watching his every move.

"Do the natives have rafts yet?"
"I believe not."

With a slight air of otherwordliness, the original Robert sighed.
"So it begins..."
