Modding Speculation

I recall reading an essay talking about the relative production levels of various professions. A master carpenter can be two to three times as productive as an apprentice whereas an expert software engineer can be ten to a hundred times as productive as a junior programmer. The relative strength of the body can vary a bit, but two minds can be worlds apart in capability.

Plus I found that most CS students--which surprised me to no end--truly weren't interested in programming. They didn't have any passion for it; it was a means to an end. I code all day at work, but what do I do with my free time? I code and read about coding because I love doing it. I was pleased as punch to find that companies would pay handsomely for me to do as an adult what I did to have fun as a child.

I wish everyone could be so lucky.

I agree completely! I love doing this. :D

Two minutes later I walked away with my A and a grin. :D

Wow, Nice. I just let my java class be my easy class. The only lectures I learned anything from where the ones on Binary Trees, I hadn't seen any of those before...

I found this too. A bunch of people are actually getting IT majors (IT - WTH), and I look at them like they are crazy, but whatever. I love programming. Even the worst assignments are interesting.

From the manual:

Automatic Mod Updates
The game will automatically check for updates to any mods you
have installed which are available through the Mod Browser system.
These updates will automatically be downloaded and applied if you
have an active internet connection.

Best news I've heard all day. With the new Mod Browser, that will cut my support time in half, and the auto updater will cut it by at least another 1/5.

Heh. My best friend is going IT. Though in his case it has more to do with not wanting to deal with the math aspect of CS than not liking programming.

And yeah, the modding tools look to be excellent. :goodjob:

What's wrong with math?

Technically speaking, I'm majoring in Computer Science/ Mathematics, a hybrid major, that sacrifices a few electives and 1 core CS class for some extra calculus and differentials, along with Modern Algebra.

Anyway, Math is easy. Math is formulaic. It's applying the math that's hard.

That's me. I LOVE programming, but math... meh. I used to be good at it before college, but proofs just got the better of me. Too much trouble. I rather see the results of my efforts live on screen :) Plus I'm business oriented, so Information Systems is a good fit for me.

Nothing, for some of us.

I considered doing that, but I decided to take some electives instead (I've always loved history. Had I not started modding, there's a good chance I'd have ended up as a history professor somewhere ). I've always been a math guy.

My friend is not.

God. :):):):) proofs. I'm sorry. I can appreciate them, I can step through them and see how elegant some of them are... But I hate doing them myself.

I've always been the kind of person to just jump to the answer. Having to explain it kills me.

History is a lot of fun too. I took AP US History back in High School, got a 5 on that, which got me out of those electives.

But what I love more than possibly CS and Math is philosophy. If I could make money doing philosophy, I'd drop my Meteorology/CS's degrees... Sadly, Philosophy majors only occupation is...teaching philosophy.

I hate proofs because often they require you know some obscure math factoid. I often don't know that necessary link in the chain, and get stuck.

One other thing that kills me is when Profs make you memorize LOTS of formula's... My proper memorization of the terminal velocity formula will not affect my future. My understanding and conceptualization of that formula will...

Philosophy can be interesting. I've always enjoyed classes that make you actually think about things. Especially when the professor encourages discussion.

Favorite professor I have is actually my cinema prof; Had him for Religion as well, which was fun. Even if I am not religious.

And yeah, I have never memorized formulas. I just program them into my calculator. If I understand the concept and know which formula I have to apply, then that's enough for me.

Yes - Discussion based classes are a lot of fun, and can be interesting.

Cinema... Love movies. I've got 2 screens here, my laptop screen and an external monitor. It makes modding easier - but I often use it for Netflix instant and modding. I think I've watched 1/3 of Netflix's online archive...

Ah yes, my TI-84 Silver plus is one of my best friends. I've got games programmed onto it to, a few that one of my genius HS friends made. Tetris is a real life-saver.

I actually don't want movies too often. I took cinema because I like the professor, mostly, but also because I knew it would get into archetypes again and dissect the story, rather than just watch movies. :p

I've got a TI-86. With no games. I spend my free time in calc programming small applications. For example, I've managed to find the correct constant to use a simple for loop as an accurate timer.

Okay - that's bad. But probably not as bad as having memorized large portions of Civ4's SDK...

I'm glad you guys share my contempt for proofs, I was already feeling left out with all that math loving here. The thing is, in my Computer Engineering math classes it was ALL about proofs. Always. God, I have such awful memories from Analytic Geometry and Linear Algebra. So much vector and matrix potential lost within pages of proofs. Calculus was often less demanding.

OK... I was reading through the manual and it looks like you guys may have won as far as what will be released. I still stand by my points that I have stated before. But let the argument end here (perhaps to be revisited at a future time:D).

I have a couple other concerns and comments from what I have read in the manual. Again, I am not looking to start another flame war, I just want to express my concerns and try and get some clarification on a few things. In the manual, it states:

ModBuddy and the World Builder SDK

Coming shortly after release, it will be possible to download Mod-
Buddy and the World Builder SDK, the official modding tools for Civ
V. This package will allow you to make custom maps and scenarios,
change minute behavior of the game’s AI, and package up
your custom mods so that others can download and enjoy them
too. Check back either on Civ V’s official web page or on the
Steam game page for more information and updates.
ModBuddy and the World Builder SDK will be available for download
through Steam. Navigate to the Tools section of the Games
tab to download.

First off, does anybody know more details about this? I am assuming that the World Builder SDK is the tool that we read about a week or so ago. I am curious as to why it has SDK in the title. Second, does anybody know any specifics that I may have missed about ModBuddy? Does anyone know exactly what it is and what it does... is it just the packager, or could it be what I have been hoping for? I am looking specifically at the line:

...make custom maps and scenarios, change minute behavior of the game’s AI, and package up your custom mods so that others can download...

Specifically the scenario part and change minute behavior of the Game's AI are of interest to me. It just seems to me that making scenarios and changing a game's AI (even small changes) are a bit more involved and would normally require going into the XML files. I guess we'll see...

And that leads me to the third thing, and perhaps my biggest concern...

Coming shortly after release,

This makes me a little worried. It means that we won't have access to these things on day one! While I can understand and let it slide if the developers just have in mind letting us play the game first and get used to the mechanics before delving deep into it, but as long as it is not too long of a wait. The question is exactly what is "shortly after release"? I have seen this promise made before and shortly turned into quite a long time.

When EA released The Sims 3, they stated that the Create-a-World (the tool which allows the user to create full neighborhoods) would follow the game shortly... and that shortly turned into nearly a year. I really hope that this is not the case with these tools, especially since we have already seen the screenshots and, from what I could tell, at least, the World Builder appears to be fully functional. I would say that it should not be more than a couple weeks at most.

Anyway, that is just my thoughts!

Ahhh...... BASIC on the Commodore in '82...... good times!

......I would have been -5 years old at the time. :eekdance:

Me I was -7 years old.

We weren't even in design phase yet :( My design team was in fact yet to be assembled.

I've got you beat. I would have been -9.

Oh, BTW... you all make me feel old! Excluding Dale, who is likely older than me (unless he was programming in BASIC on the Commodore when he was 5 years old... our real life Ender Wiggins, maybe), the closest of the three of you to me in age is Valkrionn... who is 10 years my younger! It is no wonder why you all find programming and XML editing easy as pie... You are all still young enough to have no big obligations or responsibilities (like family and tons of bills) that would hinder your ability to persuit such learning and are at the stage in your lives where you are just absorbing things like a sponge the middle of a lake.

Dang whippersnappers! :D

I was 8 when I was doing that. '74 baby here. ;)

Man you guys are going to have so much fun working with some of the new revolutionary mod tools, like Mod Buddy. Kinda jealous, wish my computer could play Civ5, or that I had enough money to buy a new comp to play it. T_T
