I was so hoping for Kublai Khan and a more diverse Mongolian civ. I mean, the trade routes are nice, but this is still a 100% conquest civ that I will consequently never play. Still, the model looks good (though not quite the teddy bear he was in Civ5 ), and those few seconds of Mongolian theme audible at the beginning sounded fantastic. Come on, Firaxis, include the DLC and Expansion themes in the soundtrack already.
The Persia's diplomacy screen in the First Look shows how Mongolia gets diplo visibility up both for trade route and trading post (örtöö effect). I guess this second diplo effect is the one that is not lost at war (plus the ones you can get from spies)
I'm guessing the Youtube/reddit/Steam forums/FB/Twitter reception to Genghis Khan/Mongolia is more positive than to Seondeok/Korea and Wilhelmina/Netherlands.
Funny that Keshiks have 5 (or even 6) movement and 2 range, because it was considered OP in Civ 5. I thought they never wanted such a unit again when Saka horse archers with 1 range were announced.
They might end up being the best unique unit again.
Depends on if they can move after attacking, that's the main strength of civ5's keshiks, can just mass them and shuffle a huge number of shots each turn.
How useful do you consider the movement boost for civilians in formation? Most support units come too late to be combined with them IMO, and great generals have 4 movement already.
Guess speeding up some battering ram might turn out helpful, but I cities will probably fall fast enough when hit by a few hit and run attacks from keshiks (which they can't retaliate!).
If you need to accompany a settler they're amazing of course, but most good spots will be gone by then.
You might use them to carry your builders around during peacetime, but i wouldn't consider it essential except in very spread out empires.
Battering rams may be useful if you don't have iron, keshiks are fast xbows basically (same stats) so that would mean a lot of shots on a walled city before doing any significant damage. Knights with the (minimum, if I'm not mistaken) +9 strength are going to be much more fearsome.
I love how the Civ design incorporates trade and visibility (important elements of Mongolia as I've mentioned, as Genghis had Muslim merchants spy out his enemy Kushlug for him, for example). The name Ortoo for the Civ ability is really fitting and specific as well. I do wonder what his agenda is going to be--typically agendas relate to the leader of Civ ability in some way.
Really glad they added throat-singing to the music too; in an ideal world Arirang would also have vocals in-game. That said Mongolia's music sounds divine and Genghis sounds less like the husky teddy bear of Civ V so I'm quite pleased with this first look.

The leader graphics and animations are getting better. They seem to have adjusted to the apparent unpopularity of the caricatures from the base game - most of the subsequent leaders have been better-drawn and with more restrained animations (with the exception of Alexander).
Nice to have a civ that actually does something meaningful with diplomatic visibility, but even by the standards of past Civ incarnations of Mongolia, this is an excessively one-dimensional cavalry civ, No bonuses to resources of any kind (beyond the small gold boost from free trading posts) make Mongolia seem unlikely to be a high tier civ - more a theme civ like the Huns or Denmark in Civ V. I dread to think how badly they'll perform as an AI, as a civ whose only focus is fast aggression in a game whose AI can't fight offensive wars.

As powerful as they look, the Mongols look pretty boring to play as, honestly.
What's the highest level of diplomatic visibility you can get with someone while being at war, anyway? I think there are 4 things you can do:
- embassy/delegation
- trade route
- spy or being ally
- printing
- for the khans, trade post
I guess the first 2 won't work at war, so you can have 3 levels during war at most?
