Most Overrated Games

It's been a long time since I played it, but if I recall correctly the main storyline was fairly linear. However, there were several more sidequests, and generally more freedom in how one could go about doing them.

Majora also did a better job than most games in explaining why NPCs seem to always do the same thing over and over again. ;)

Well, more Sidequests is not my definition of less linear gameplay.

And hating StarCraft is dumb if you like RTSs. At the very least, it's better than Age of Empires (the whole series). And Warcraft III has...an UPKEEP system!!! It's called Warcraft, not Peacecraft!

What is bad about the upkeep system?

I can understand somebody saying that Mario Galaxy is overrated, but Mario 3 and World probably are not. You sir, need to brush up on your act.
SMB3 is most certainly overrated. World is certainly more debatable; I think it is slightly overrated, but one could argue it isn't.
You can say Majora is a little better than Ocarina, but not that it kicks its ass.
I'll say whatever I like. I've played Ocarina and Majora and I had a lot more fun playing the latter.

Age of mythology
Rise of nation
Kingdom hearts 1/2
All FIFA series (Pro evolution soccer is better)

Starcraft, I just don't get the game's appeal. I played, it was boring, I hate rts anyway. This one came to mind because my friend is raving about the upcoming sequel.

Only because you aren't able to play, doesn't mean the game sucks. The 99% of people who don't like starcraft aren't able to play it, personal experience...

Super Mario Galaxy (sorry, not 97% material)
Age of Empires (or did they fix the pathfinding issues in the expansion pack?)
Super Mario Sunshine (excuse me, but the camera sucks!)

Actually, I saw Super Mario 64 on one "Most Overrated Games" list, along with Half-Life 2, Tomb Raider, Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Jade Empire. They cited that Mario couldn't walk in a straight line in Mario 64. Really!

I'd like to get the VC version. I mean, it doesn't have SMS's god awful camera, but it has more difficulty than SMG.

You actually preferred RS:LV 2 to COD4? You sir, are mad. LV2 is practically in no way different from the first one and it too wasnt anything special since it was a watered down RS, made noob friendly unlike the olden RS games.

I happen to remember "good old" RS times. My opinion was that they were more pain in the a** than fun to play. Ofcourse for realism freaks those were good games, no doubt.

Anyways, both CoD and RS are tube running FPS games. Though I prefer RS since it's way much more fun than CoD. Especially in Las vegas 2 where you could unlock different weapons with different play styles.

Killing is just cooler in Las Vegas.

@alcal- Are you calling those games overrated? AoM is an awesome game, one of the best RTSes out there:

My favourite RTSes:
Impossible Creatures
Age of Mythology
Warcraft III
Starcraft

Just a question, do people find Halo genuinely despicable? I seem to catch that vibe. I've only played the game a few times, but I enjoyed it. It is a simple, easy-to-play FPS, and this is coming from a person who typically dislikes that genre. Overrated, quite possibly, but it's not a bad game.

It's not a bad game; I just don't think it lives up to all the hype. That, and I'm a sucker for realistic physics engines.

For me AOW is little overrated, not because i can't play it but because it is slower and lack of action compared to starcraft/warcraft 3.

But overall i didn't like 3 things of that game

1) The epoch system: it's reduce the personal freedom and make game linear
2) The rock, paper, scissor gameplay is for noobs
3) You can build settlement only on some points: WTH???

Okay, I can easily imagine people saying Metal Gear Solid 4 here, due to the hour-length cutscenes.

Civilization IV, well, it's definetely 9.4/10 material once you get past the crazy lag at the end of a game. With that, though, it's at least a full point lower.

I understand the whole opinion thing. My younger brother, for example, hates turn-based games. So for him, Advance Wars, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Civilization, and X-COM are piles of garbage.

Admittedly, Gamespy had some nice picks in their top 25 most overrated list. Super Mario Sunshine @ #24, Morrowind (noooooo!!!) at #21, Impossible Creatures at #20, Halo at #10, Final Fantasy VII at #7, Quake II at #5, Metal Gear Solid 2 @ #2, and #1 was...

BLACK & WHITE!!!

Net Tens' #1 was GTA: San Andreas, and the others were, from #2-#10, Tomb Raider, Super Mario 64, Gran Turismo 4, DOOM 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Jade Empire, Halo, Duke Nukem 3D, and Half-Life 2. That's a load of shooters there!

Yet another one had the Halo series at the top, followed by Final Fantasy VII. He also had Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, and The Sims (he probably doesn't like that genre) along with Mario Kart 64 and GoldenEye 007 (stating that the former is nothing special nowadays and that the latter was killed by Perfect Dark).

Okay, don't get mad at me for posting this. I think I can draw the conclusion that the Halo series and Final Fantasy VII are quite popular choices.

i've had loads more fun with AoE then Starcraft, and spent hours playing Halo 1, 2, and 3. The only thing that bugged me was switching over to the Arbiter for the second or third mission in the second game. After I get past that though, it's great.

Well, nobody has mentioned Half-Life 2 or Metal Gear Solid 2 yet.

Glad to see all the people saying Halo, World of Warcraft, and Super Mario Galaxy. Yeah, I haven't played Super Mario 64, and that's why I used to like SMG more, but now I think SMG is more of a 9.4/10 than 9.7/10.

It's definetely the best game on the Wii though, that they got right.

@MadScots Man: Age of Empires II is more polished than StarCraft, but aside from that and the epic volume of the castles and trebuchets, StarCraft is better in just about every way.

Do you think Half Life 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 are overrated?

And StarCraft > AoE is, naturally, your opinion.
