In a society where physical appearance is becoming (if it already hasn't already become) the key factor in personal judgement, I suppose it's no wonder. That still doesn't make it right. Is anyone else noticing the social and moral decline of North American society or am I just being a cynical nut? Or maybe it's something else?

Physical appearance became the important thing in music due to a couple factors. People in pretty much every industry are always trying to think up of a new and different way to do things to boost their sales, and if the consumers like what they did, then it will become a new trend in that industry and the people who did it first will have a head start and can forever claim that they were the first. This is no different with the music industry. Over time record producers decided to try something new and go with an artist with high physical appeal over real musical tallent, and have somebody else write music that was decent enough that it wouldn't drive people away. This didn't always work, but eventually it came "in sync" with another trend.

This was the overall lowering of moral standards and raising of tolerance levels. These days kids are beginning to curse at an earlier age, start doing grown-up things like dating earlier than in the past, movies that at one time would have been rated R are now rated PG-13, more-revealing clothing styles are becoming the custom, and so on. Eventually some record company signed an artist for looks rather than tallent, and it worked because the public was used to such things that a few decades ago would have been forbidden. As young people and adults too began paying money to go to concerts, buy posters, buy CDs, buy a Pay-per-View showing of an event, that featured these artists that were good-looking but not musically tallented, more record labels started jumping on the bandwagon and signing more of these types of artists. Now it has become the norm and has also developed niches in movies and television.

People are naturally attracted to the other people, whether it be the opposite sex or the same, and it is largely impossible to not be. In the past it would be against social morals to have a performer dress in revealing clothing and have large numbers of people pay money to enjoy looking at them, even though it is natural. In modern society its not considered that bad any more, so people let loose their emotions and pay money to see these performers just for the sake of looking at their attractive bodies. If the current trend continues the music guise that this has all developed under might be taken away, and there will be some new art form where beautiful people wear little or nothing and put on physical performances in front of crowds, sell posters of themselves, etc.

I predict that morals will take over before that happens and there will be a backlash where it may become "uncool" to like an artist that is atractive, and even if a good-looking artist has tallent they may not be able to find a market that will stand them. This is just how our society and culture works, its a constant teeter-totter with people pulling on whatever side they think it will go next so they can make their fame and fortune, whether it be a McCarthy with a moral crusade or a group of Flappers with their radical new styles.

EDIT: that was very immature, im sorry...

There's music beyond MTV. Not anyone that write their own songs are rock. All the bands above write their own songs, and they're all on the line between pop and soft rock.

I forgot about Dire Straits and Queen. Thanks G-man.

There is something I just love about the guy from Dire Straits' voice.

I also like Blue Oyster Cult, but don't know enough of their less popular songs to call myself a true fan.

I also have to give some credit to Jimmy Buffet. He does a wonderful live performance.

Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, The Police, Metallica (their earlier works), Rush, Rammstein (spelled correctly I might add :D ), Rush, The Beatles, old Van Halen, Rush, Genesis, Queen, The Who, Rush, Yes, ELP, ZZ Top.

Sorry, did I mention Rush?

In regards to the whole boy-band/pop/rap argument, I quote my dad, who's a 68 year-old curmudgeon.

"They're all a bunch of screaming ignorant wanna-bes....no good music was written after 1780."

'Nuff Said.

Knopfler does have a great voice, but more importantly, he writes great music. Some of his songs are just as complicated to play as Paganini or Tarrega and sound just as good.

OKay....

After having read this thread, i do have one question ; why do you people care about who the artist is, why he makes his music, and why do you crack down on eachother's tastes (less than kind)? And personality (very unfriendly). And whatever comes next.
Please warn me before you start informing us of other character flaws people might have.. Frankly, i'm not interested in them.

Good point, and I like your taste in music.

Everyone needs to settle down a bit. You can like who you like and think what you think. If someone gives you a hard time about it, roll with the punches a little. It's not like they are questioning your religion, or disparaging your nation. It's your taste in music, just realize that you can like what you like and run down their choice a little. Of course do it in a good natured way with a smiley or two to keep things civil....

1: Papa Roach
2: The Prodigy
3: Linkin Park
4: Creed
5: Metallica
6: AAF/Alien Ant Farm
And then some more i can't remember

I guess I'm the only onr in here listening to techno...lol
Astral Projection is the best.
Dj Tiesto, Miranda and Hallucinogen are good too.

I like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Tool and bands in that genre; Mozart, Beethoven, Bach + more in the classical genre;
And I hear pop also.

The only thing I really hate is rap music - especially gangster rap, those guys have no talent for music...well, I think anyway...

While most of the Nu-metal stuff IS a lot of rubbish bolloks, there are some exceptions.

Pop is crap, but I personally quite like Madonna.
Nu-Metal is crap, but I quite like Alien Ant Farm.
Dance music is too repetitive, but I quite like Daft Punk.
Rap sucks, but Tupac is all right.

There are exceptions to every rule. Curt, do you wear clothes? They're mass-manufactured too.

Now Darkchild, in Britain, there's a guy called Darius Danesh. He plays guitar, writes his own music and songs, and loves music (he also does a hilarious version of Baby, 'One More Time', but that's not important), meeting what you said about Nu-metal musicians.

BUT, if you ever see Darius Danesh, and I expect you will when he ends up in North America, you will be no doubt he is a popstar.

How will he get over there? By winning a TV show called Popidol

It takes more than that to be a rock musician.

Gary Barlow wrote his own music and lyrics, and loved music, but if Take That were a rock band well...
