Absolutely not...I have many cuts that could be considered Techno, but I listen primarily to the more "accessible" artists...like Propellerheads, James Reynolds, Jan Hammer, Thomas Dolby, et al. The heavy-duty trance stuff is 100% lost on me.

I couldn't agree more. As a musician and a fan, I cannot bear to listen to that ilk sampling other songs and using it as backgound.

To those who bash rap:
If you listen to some of the more recent rap productions you'll notice that the genre is becoming more and more unique in its choice of music.
From a cultural perspective, understand that the earliest rappers were born and raised in poverty, unable to afford any of the musical instruments that the more popular music genres implemented in their music. Sampling was a far more viable option given their financial situations (ie poor).
At the time when rap began to emerge, the music community was not very welcoming to this new style of music, making it difficult for them to become mainstream. The use of familiar melodies from other songs helped to propel the genre into the mainstream markets and expose rap to much of the modern world.
Now that rap has raked in so much money, many rap artists are developing their own music, from the beats and melodies to the lyrics (which have always been their own).
Those are only some of the factors.
This reminds me of a Chinese proverb: Imitation is the mother of creation. Are you so certain that the music you listen to has been entirely unique from the time it was first introduced to what it has become today? I don't believe music genres are created. They branch out and evolve.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
