NaNoWriMo 2013

I reached 22,000 words last year but school got in the way. I intend to hit 50,000 and beyond this year. I'm organized. I'm prepared. I will be writing a novel I came up with as part of a writing prompt given by our very own angst months ago. The Nano draft is titled, "Clayhard or Clay Trying". Epic Fantasy.

EDIT: We should put everyone's progress bar thingies in the first post of this thread.

^If that's about golems I wanna read it.

That's a good idea.

Anyhow, as for myself, I've come to the conclusion that it'd probably be better for me to do the "easier" story as I already have more of it planned out (relatively speaking), and given that I'm one of those writers who prefers things planned out rather than doing stuff spontaneously of the top of my head, I think it's for the better. I can always write random snippets of my other more personal, interesting story on the side, I guess. More important to get myself back in the mood more than anything.

As for the story I will write, I have no title for it yet (I tend not to have titles for my stories these days until I guess I finish), unofficially I just call it "the exiled Prince" or "the other Prince story" (as the only novel I've finished typed also dealt with a Prince) or "Tianmei" (the given name of the main character). Guess that's still better than the title for the other story I was considering doing for NaNoWriMo, which is still unofficially "Chicken Lettuce Salad" even though it has nothing to do with that (at least literally).

I guess that would be up to me, then, since I can still edit the OP? How exactly would that work?

This is an interesting idea, although I don't have the time for it.

I've had a few stories I've come up with over the years but never really put onto paper. I'm pretty sure I still have the scraps of paper somewhere in case I want to try this in 2014.

I'm about 20,000 words into a novel I had hoped to finish before football season, but then other engagements got in the way. I doubt I'll be able to hit the daily goal, but this could be good motivation to try and crank out at least a very rough first draft so I can spend the winter editing, and getting it ready for a spring release.

I'm happy to see that more people are getting interested. :)

For the ones who say they don't have time... I'm just wondering this: How many words do you post on CFC and other online sites in an average day? I'm sure some of us manage a lot more than 1667!

To put it another way (while realizing that those who have time commitments to jobs and school do have understandable concerns about time)... which seems more challenging - the number of words, or the idea of using those words to make a story?

Writing a coherent story, hands-down. That, and I am a very nitpicky editor on the stuff I have to write for my job, I'll edit the same paragrah five times in a single day.

In a forum you're always replying to other people and have something to talk about. And you do it by snippets. Now, doing it on only one theme is different and very hard.

The rules give leeway for anthologies and vignettes, though.

I used to take part in short-story contests - anywhere from 500-750 words. We had 48 hours to produce them, and I recall most of the entries being pretty coherent stories. Not all of them were good ones, mind, but at least they weren't complete nonsense.

The precise trick to 1667 words per day (or significantly more...) *is* turning off your inner editor and just forging ahead.

Incidentally, if I recall last year's rules I presume nobody wants to see my progress bar :-p

Don't mind what I said last year - I must have been in an incredibly grouchy mood. :(

Be proud of your progress, but please don't rub it in others' faces if they're behind. The only person we're really competing with in this contest is ourselves.

What do you think it is, Mr. Angst?

Thinking about it, 1667 words isn't a lot. I mean I could do that in half an hour if I really wanted to.

But it's of course the inner editor and all those thoughts inside the head that get in the way.
