"Like all leader Personas, Napoleon's Emperor Persona has a unique outfit and background, new gameplay bonuses, and an alternative agenda when played by the AI. Napoleon's Emperor Persona specializes in commerce and military might, with a new Unique Ability: Empereur des Français, which reduces the Trade Route capacity for a target civilization and causes massive Grievances. He also gets bonus Gold per Age for every leader he's Unfriendly or Hostile with, but less Gold per Age for every leader who sees him as Friendly or Helpful." (https://civilization.2k.com/en-GB/2k-account-benefits/).

I was surprised that one of the personalities that Napoleon may have is focused on harming other civilizations/players. His strategy is based on trolling others to get everyone to hate him and he win bonus for that. While being a friend of other civilizations generates problems, punishing Napoleon for behaving "well."
It is a very "meme" personality. It should be called "Napoleon the troll." And his ability should be called "the Emperor of the Trolls" or "The Supreme Troll."

It's historical at least. He is the guy who thought declaring war on the whole world was a good idea. I'm just happy I can not have Napoleon by not connecting my account. :D

I'll go out on a limb and say that Napoleon's Emperor persona will be the first AI to die in nearly every game he shows up in. There's only so much money can do against the worst diplomacy in the game, right?

Not to mention that as a player you're incentivized to eliminate him asap before he takes away your trade route capacity.

Emperor Napoleon is definitely ahead the race for most hated leader at the moment.

But it seems like he will be neutered in MP, since human players probably can't determine their relationship status like the AI can, or if they can, human players will know better than to give the person playing Emperor Napoleon free money.

It's always fun to have that one leader you love to hate. Note sure that Napoleon is the best choice for that
I hated him anyway. :mischief: (Hate's a strong word. I just find him boring. :p )

What's a persona? Is it different to a leader? Or just a new name for the same thing?
It's a second version of the same leader, with different outfits, abilities, and agendas.

It's basically like having a new leader, but Firaxis saves on having to make a new animation rig and voice acting.

It just occurred to me to wonder if you eliminate Napoleon early on in Antiquity, will he be resurrected in Exploration?
My guess would be no? But that is an interesting question.

Well, at least that's a rather unique way of playing.

His ability must cost a lot of diplomacy/influence points, however. That might be difficult to spam, since you will most likely need those points to get enough support during your numerous wars... But I'm sure there will be a few military civs that would go well with him. Seeing how the different ressources seem powerfull, reducing the amount your opponent has access to for a dozen turns might be worth the expense.

Also, it is not like you can't already be noxious to your neighbours with sanctions, decreasing culture and food production (and there might be more you can unlock).

Emperor I think is his normal skin (in Civ 6 every persona leader gained a name for their base persona)
"By setting up a free 2K Account, you're entitled to add Napoleon Bonaparte with his Emperor Persona to your selection of leaders in Civilization VII at launch!"

So Napoleon isn't a standard leader at all? Does France have a different default leader? Or is France not in the game at all? That would be especially weird considering how many French wonders are in the game.

France could be in without a default leader, or France could have another default leader. I kind of suspect the latter more than the former.

My suspicion is that France will be in the game, probably twice. But I think France's base game leader won't be Napoleon. It will probably be a non-head-of-state like Jeanne d'Arc.

Therefore, neither version of Napoleon could be considered the default, as they both are incentive DLCs.

For France, you have so many non-head-of-states personna that could fit. Richelieu, for one, had a lot of influence during Renaissance. Mazarin is another one. In a more military side, you've got La Fayette, that was active both in France and in Quebec.

This is such a cool ability. Seems like the first time we’re getting a way to specifically target other civs in an ability with diplomatic actions.

A long time ago I had an idea for a Pontus civ led by Mithridates. His ability would have been able to target enemy cities with the creation of rebel partisans (inspired by the Asiatic Vespers).

I also like the gold malus/bonus setup encouraging you to be unfriendly all game. So cool.

Side note: anyone else shamelessly try to reverse engineer the Civ 7 civ feature pages to glean more details about leaders and factions? (https://civilization.2k.com/civ-vii/game-guide/civilizations/egypt/ etc).

I tried so many other civ names but just got 404s. I tried replacing civilizations with “leaders” and that led to a page but it wasn’t filled out.

Maybe human players can intentionally overwhelm Napoleon with Friendly greetings, gifts, and Declarations of Friendship, and Napoleon will be forced to use his Influence to decline or ignore their advances. Or he can accept the gifts and the GPT hit that comes with that!

"Kill him with kindness." :D
