I suggest that Firaxis use a ship, the CARGO FLUYT

This is the history of the Cargo Fluyt

"Fluyts were invented by the Dutch around 1600, then widely copied throughout northern Europe. Essentially a smaller but much more economical merchantman, it can be sailed with a tiny crew (12 to 15 men is not uncommon). A fluyt has large cargo spaces, but a draft so shallow it can enter rivers, coves and small harbors unsuitable to large craft. It's sailing qualities are equivalent to a merchantman, although the best point of sailing is slightly different.

The smallest of the square-rigged ships, fluyts make poor warships. Almost always they are manned by peaceful traders who often surrender after a broadside or two. They are unpopular as pirate ships."

In Civ3 terms a Cargo Fluyt should be a Cheaper or Faster version of the Galleon

What do my Fellow board posters think?

By the way if your scratching your head and saying "Ive heard of Cargo Fluyts before somewhere..." Your right its from Sid Meirs Pirates

Considering that the game is probably going gold soon, and that the game will come out in a few weeks, I think that it is virtually impossible for that to make it in time.

It should be fairly easy to do

I imagine theres quite a few ship models in the Pirates Conquest that arent used by the Vanillia game that could be used for the Cargo Fluyt

But even if it is to late it could be fixed in a patch

I think it would become one of the least popular uus. The Swiss Merc makes the Dutch very formitable (good golen age time as well)

But the fact remains the Swiss pikemen are not Dutch

After all the French UU isnt the Genoese Crossbow men who the French used as mercanarys.

A UU should reflect that civilization.

The Cargo Fluyt fills that role well

The Dutch where known for their over seas Merchantile empire and trade not Swiss Pikemen

If the uu represented the army at the time, what about Musketeers and Immortals?

Both these units were body guards, not soldiers. The Immortals were only used once (at the Battle of Thermopoly, the Immortals were the only soldiers who had anything remotely close to the equiptment of the Greeks. They charged the Greeks, and failed. Later they managed to force some in-experienced Greeks to flee from a mountain pass, and surrounded the Lyonidas' army). I don't think Musketeers were used at all in a military fashion (They were known as fine Sword fighters, but France never had a regiment of Musketeers who attacked in a standard military fashion).

Can you tell me the Dutch didn't use Swiss Mercs at all to fight?

Musketeers are meant to be Napelonic Infantry, you'll notice the Musketeer uses a musket not a sword

I don't suppose you ever read the discription (the one that mentions them being disbanded before that point)

well if thats the case Id say the Musketers are wrong (Just like the Swiss pikemen) and Id replace them with Napolenonic infantry

I agree with the Dutch, they should had a boat, too late now, but maybe good for further versions.

Is this what you are talking about? flute ship:

that would be a neat UU :) (the only ships I firmlly support would be transports)

There are basically two options IMHO:
the 'linieschip' (Ship of the line) like de Zeven Provinciën

DeZevenProvincien.jpg

This is a true warship (and the third ship to carry the name), carrying 80 guns and participating in almost all major Dutch naval victories of the second half of the 17th century (the 4-Day battle in 1666, the raid on Chatham, Kijkduin where the Dutch defeated the combined English & French fleets in 1673, just to name a few).
The second option is the 'spiegelretourschip' also known as the 'Oostindievaarder' (the type of ships used for trade with the Far East) like the Batavia:

batavia2.jpg

The second type usually had decent armament too, given the many perils of the trip to the East Indies. In times of war, they were often incorporated into the fleet.

If someone is going to mod in a ship UU for the Dutch, it better be one of these instead of a militarily useless vessel like the Fluyt, which could merely trigger a GA by accident.

The Top picture looks like a Frigate and the Bottom one looks like a Merchantmen neither of which arem Unique to the Dutch

Im thinking of doing an Historical mod where the tech tree for each Civ is diffrent and reflects that civilization at its hegiht

i dunno too much about all those old ships, and don't want to do reseach on it either.

But the height of the ditch empire very definately is marked by ships, and also definately not just merchant ships.
Also, we did have different ships than others, in history class long ago in highschool i remember they told me the dutch ships could defeat bigger numbers because they were smaller and more manueverable.

And if others used the same ships because they copied it from us, it is still a dutch ship :)
