@ May Day:

Spoiler :
You should settle 3W 1S of Amsterdam. Cottaging & Calendar resources will help float your economy, probably more valuable than Rotterdam to far west.

@May Day
Spoiler :
What Ergo Sum says is absolutely true (and you should also have settled the two-fish-and-iron site as well) but there are some much more serious issues than this.

You have twice settled in a position to lose fish. The Hague should be be one square to the left and Rotterdam should be on the stone. Another city south of Rotterdam can claim the other resources. Food is king in this game. Do not waste it. If there is one thing in this game which comes close to being an absolute, this is it. Do. Not. Waste. Food. Specials.

The Hague is building a monument. The only purpose of a monument is to get some cheap culture in order to expand borders but we're creative so we already have cheap culture and The Hague's borders have already expanded anyway!. So the build is completely useless.

Why did you research compass and alphabet.? The former is basically useless until you go much further down that path and the latter has little point when you have no one to trade with. On the same point, the Harbor in Utrecht is point; you are getting zero benefit from it. The one in Amsterdam does give you 3 gold but other builds (like settlers!) would have been far more productive.

Your three main cities are badly over-developed. Utrecht, for example, has several mines that it won't use for many centuries to come. This is a waste of worker power. In contrast Rotterdam is working an undeveloped tile. Those wasted worker turns would have been far better spent at that city.

Speaking of Utrecht, that is a terrible location for Maoi as there are only four sea tiles. If you have stone, and you do, Maoi shouldn't be built until after it is claimed in any case.

I'm sorry if this sounds a bit severe but I assume that you posted this in order to get some criticism about your game and to learn to play better.

yes, thank you. Information like this is exactly why Im in the game and posting all those shots. Dont worry about sounding harsh. I have played this game quite a bit, enjoy it (CII and CIII too), and still have trouble winning on Noble, so I need to find out what the heck is broken.

So I get scolded often for not having enough workers. However, I always find myself running out of things to do for my workers and end up "overdeveloping". What should I have had the workers doing?

The standard things to do with unemployed workers are
  • Build roads everywhere inside your own territory to make defence easier.
  • Build roads towards your enemies to make it easier for your conquering armies to get there.
  • Pre-chop trees to within 1 turn of completion, for later use.
  • Chop trees that will never be inside any BFCs so somebody nearby gets the hammer benefit.
  • If you're ever going to build a new improvment over top of an existing one, start building the new one but stop early so it can be finished fast at the right time.
  • Mine hills outside BFCs in case you get the small chance of popping a metal.

Just posting as I am still reading through the entire thread (currently on page 2), but what is it with people and acronyms? This doesn't make for very good learning when some can't even understand what everything is! Argh.

Just wanted to ask that. :P

FYI, acronyms (especially TLAs) are SOP for gaming jargon. They're usually not impossible to figure out (except TGL vs. TGL), but feel free to ask.

HTH, HAND!

First Monarch win! Monarch / Normal / 1916 / Domination

Spoiler :
Used so many ideas from the S&T forum here. Too many to fully list. Axe rushed Genghis and easily took out his archers, then played to Willem's strengths, settling coastal cities and building GLH then Pyramids and running Representation. Did not meet another civ or get religion until about 1300 AD. Started a GP golden age that merged into a Taj Mahal GA and ultimately lasted 24 turns. That gave me an unbeatable tech lead. Played the diplomacy game but in 1750 Monte DoW'd me out of the blue with a pathetically weak attack just as I get Infantry. (Actually, I had been running a privateer blockade on him for several turns and I think that ticked him off. BUG 4.4 seems to have a few little logic fixes like that.) One turn into the war I get the marathon runner GA event and used that time to get dikes up in a lot of coastal/river cities. The juggernaut just kept rolling. In 1820 Ragnar DoW'd me, possibly because Monte bribed him, but also possibly because I had grabbed some real estate on "his" island. That eventually led me up against Wang Kon, and after a hard look at the map I decided WK's lands would put me over the domination limit. And that was so.

I refused to accept capitulation by either Monte, Ragnar, or Wang. I wonder if that would have brought a quicker victory, but I had the materiel to finish the job each time.

At 925 BC I have settled 4 cities. I ended up settling in place, and went work boat first, to let the city grow so I can get hammers for my workers and other settlers. Moved my warrior SW got to huts, one was a tech(mystic) the other was gold. So far only one civ I have found and actually they found me (Genghis Khan). I did go for early Stonehenge and got it on turn 58. I wanted the early border pops for all my new cities. I don't think Genghis Khan is very big/or strong right now, teching to take him out. More updates later on :)

Attachment is a map of my progress so far at 925 bc

500AD:
Well not much has been going on, here, GK is pleased with me were sharing religion, and I settled a city to the west to grab the iron over there and thats about it, since its in the middle of the desert lol. Right now I teched to build wineries and plantations almost to Macemans. I have 10 axe and 4 cats, thinking when I get 20-10 I will start attacking. :)

1200AD:
Well GK is almost dead, working on his last city. After taking one of his, I see Montezuma to my NE on a different Cont/Island. I will start going for Communism to get State Property to continue to expand on my cont without distant penalty, and start building a navy and see where everyone else is at/doing.
Attached map of the Land GK had. hehehe

1600AD:
Ok well I have met every civ now, and I am leading in points right now. I was the first to Lib, so I got my free tech. There are a lot of little islands with barb cities on them...thinking about venturing out and taking those...maybe going for domination here. Monty does not look that strong either. Ill have rifleman soon!

End Game:
Ok well, Washington ended popping up eventually, and they were a vasal state of the Vikings. I ended up winning by diplomatic vote. in 1950. I had a great time playing, and I will continue to follow this thread. Thank you!

You are CRE and that gives you +2 base culture in every city. SH only adds +1 culture and makes your city +3 from the start. On normal speed, this does give you 1 turn advantage, but only saves you 1 turn. It sounds like a waste to me. :)

Well it gave me a boost on my great scientist also :) Only took 12 turns to build :) I got the orcle also, and learned Monarchy with that for all the wine around me
