NCSG IV Redux - The Mummy Strikes Back

set6versailles.jpg

This is a nitpick, but hopefully educational as well... the item circled is actually the Hermitage... the blue building just southeast of the windmill on the plains-hill is Versailles.

Wow, clearly I've forgotten what Versailles looks like :smoke:. Ok, well... it's the city with the silver star on it. Unless that's... uh... the FP? Ok, I'll stop talking...

Very nice S.ilver.

I want to rush the SoL so thats the GE dealt with.

I suggest we wait till steel and cannons before we start our big push. In golden age mode that shouldn't be to long. Till then we can scrape our pennies (cents ;)) together to mass upgrade.

PFT

I check our cities and see what might be needed where.

1

I up the EP on Asoka to ensure we keep city visibility and hopefully gain some more visabiity in the rest of his cities.

I make some trades.
Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

I cancel our trade to Fred for his rice and renegotiate.
Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

I use our windfall to upgrade our remaining maces to rifles.

2

Nothing of real interest.....

3

AP vote. I vote Mansa just because he's the only runner!

Start a Jail in Helio

4

Kyoto starts on a baraks so it can be a troop pump.

5

Use the GE on the SoL (6 turns left).

Our GA ends so fire off the GArt and the GProth for another 15 turns of love!

6

Chem > Steel. Cannons.........;)

7

I set Largos to build wealth as I can't be assed with it. Also it gives us a nice boost so we'll get some money to upgrade are Trebs to Canons. Eventually.

8

I decide to get more Jails on the go.

9

Not much really.

10

SoL!!!! One of my favorite Pangea wonders along with T3G. I assigne the specs mainly as Merchants an Priests for the gold.
Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

This alloes me to bump sci from 50% to 60% shaving a turn off of Steel (5 > 4 turns).

Info
Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Notice the top units in these cities.
Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

Victory. If we take Asoka we'll just about hit Domination I guess.
Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

Of course we could Vasslise him and then take another fast Vassle for the same effect (would have to be Fred I guess)

So I started Jails and have also started some other happy booster buildings in antisipatiopn of war. Don't think we have the siege for it yet but we get Steel in 4 so thats ok!

Roster
GatlingGun - on deck
Bleys
S.ilver
grandad1982 - just played
Jkaen - up now

The save

Nice set grandad. Steel in 4! :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: Jkaen will finish out our Golden Age, and then Gatling Gun will show us the true art of annihilating AIs :p.

One question... how many AP votes did we have next to everyone else? It might've been better to abstain and force an empty AP. We do NOT want Mansa forcing us into peace during our final push.

Can't recall the AP votes. I think it was over 200. Maybe. Didn't think about the AP peace vote!

Pretty uneventful set:

I was going to write out build details, but thats pretty dull, the highlights were:

Great Prophet born in Thebes and parked
Steel finished and Corporation started
I cancelled trade with khmer at Malins request since khmer hate us anyway
I abstained in a AP win vote, we can easy block that.
Corportion finished, started Steam Power

I generally built Cannons, Jails and some then general infrastructure.

Some thoughts...

1) We need to drop to emanci. The unhappiness from others running it is already causing us problems, and we can't stop to deal with them (well... we could but then we would be further delayed in our victory). Fastest route is to just drop to emanci. Considering we have whipped nothing in the last 15 turns, and that we are SPI, we probably already should've dropped to emanci (would've sped up our few towns left too).

I would recommend dropping Theo for FR as well to deal with happiness, since we are basically buffed with military, and the only real production will be suicide cannons.

2) Some of the tile assignments in our newly developed land are questionable. Max food is usually good, but if these cities grow without infrastructure, they cost us maintenance without contributing (not that it really matters since we are looking to win now).

3) Fred is in WHEOOH mode again. Meaning we can't bribe him to war with Sury. Asoka wants rifling to attack. Not ideal in any case. However, it probably doesn't matter as we can probably fight all of them at the same time without too many problems (Sury cannot get to us even if he is fool enough to DoW).

4) Jkaen stashed some units in Ainu. Good planning there mate, it'll be good to open up another front at Madurai. At any rate, we need to get attacking now. Consider switching off science for a turn to upgrade all the Trebs. Our Cuirs should be good enough since no one has rifles yet.

EDIT: 5) Kagoshima and Satsuma could probably use more up to date garrison in case Fred comes knocking. Hopefully he won't though, and all his military is elsewhere.

I was tempted to form a 3rd main stack, but decided to leave it as a mini stack to handle any counters for now

T360 - War plan turn: Delhi has the SoZ and should be a high priority to take... I think the initial plan is Bombay > Delhi, then work west to clean up our reinforcements path to these cities... the one problem I could see is if Asoka vassals himself to Fred. we can probably take them both, but this would make things a bit messier. I'll also switch civics as discussed.

T361 - Scientist pops in Memphis. Switched to FS, Eman, FR. Research to 0%. Started moving workers away from the front lines. (134G, 79G/t @ 50%, 613B/t)

T363 - Bribe Asoka into war with Suri for Steel

T365 - Declare on Asoka

T365_1.jpg

T366 - Take Agra (no losses).

T366_1.jpg

T367 - Take Bombay (no losses)... Bombay comes with the Sistine Chapel and the Confucian Shrine (32G/t)... I also notice that Asoka now has Rifling... Steam Power > Assembly Line (15 turns)

T367_1.jpg

T367_2.jpg

T368 - Take Maduri (lose a Cav)... Asoka will capitulate now, but I think we could grab the SoZ & Versailles before we let him give in

T369 - Start moving forces towards Delhi and Lahore... Fred can be bribed to take out Suri.

This game is in the bag...

Sweet!

This is soover. This might be one of the strongest games we've played so far.

Do vassels add half of there land area to your overall total? I'm pretty sure its not the full amount.

Vassals add half their pop and half their land

Got it. I doubt it will get back to me, we should just march over Fred when we are done with Asoka and put it in the books.

EDIT: Well, this is what I get for not paying closer attention to the game thread. I didnt know we had the Colosseum Quest. With the SoZ in striking range, thats a free Golden Age.

OK here we go. I did a few iffy things, but we are in great shape here so no worries.

I took a pile of cities from Asoka, then gave him peace. I kept them all, since we need the tiles for the Dom limit. Heres a look at the ones we got:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0133.jpg
When I gave peace, I also ended up with this lame city, LOL. Its not a big problem though, we can actually get culture up quickly enough. I also got MS from him for free. Kinda shocked me, maybe I should have asked for Sci Meth.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0134.jpg

Here are a couple more pics, our 2 stacks, and I spotted one of Freds stacks still poised to take one of Sury's cities. I left the 2 stacks in these spots so we can decide a course of action.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0136.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0137.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0138.jpg
Here are the current civics we are in. I did another round of Slavery, but we should pop back into Emanc now. Other options can be discussed though.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0139.jpg

So points to consider:
-Civic change. Oh, I also put us into Islam, in case another vote comes up (Mansa had a Diplo Win vote during my turn)
-Next target. Sury or Fred? I say Fred. We should drop on him, and take his core cities, Berlin, Hamgurg, Colonge maybe. We are close to a win now.

Whoever is next, you have 12 turns left of a Golden Age as well. I built the Colosseums once we took the SoZ. Assembly Line about to come in as well, so we can either upgrade or build some. We actually are a bit low on foot soldiers, since so many have been left behind as garrisons.

One idea is to go into Rep, Vassalage, Emanc, Merc, and Theocracy for a few turns, running as many specialists as we can so we can lower the slider for upgrade cash. We also crank out Infantry while we do this. Then, its back into US, FS, Emanc, FM, and FR for the duration.

I got it. Looks like a good thrashing of Asoka...

It gets ugly here because Fred gets Infantry in 3. We get it in 1, but once they have infantry, our cavs basically bounce off unless we want to throw a lot of troops at a target.

The easiest way to attack Fred would be through Cologne and Hamburg, since Berlin has a lot of culture covering it. However, all of Fred's troops attacking Sury go through Cologne... We need spies there to tell us when the troops flow slows down. Ideally, Fred will take or raze Angkor Wat (presumably soonish), and his troops will press on, leaving an opening for us to attack him. It'd be easiest to push in through India, while leaving sufficient garrison at Kagoshima and Satsuma.

In all honesty, just give Ahmedabad back to Asoka. It is awful and will cost us gobs of maintenance, so there's really no point in holding it. It also borders Sury, ensuring we need to garrison it so it doesn't revolt. AFAIK, cities taken from your vassal before a capitulation won't revolt, because they'll be given their entire BFC at the expense of your vassal.

Oh, and it seems Bleys hit the jackpot in Bombay, as Sistine is there. So I'll make hiring more artists in the borders a priority, although it may be faster to just attack...

1740AD (380):

Preflight check. My how time flies... 7th turnset for me already and we're soon going to win the game.

I note we are finally Muslim. Matters little unless a vote pops up, and we are nearing that time where it becomes obsolete...

Asoka is our vassal now, so I remove the EP weight from him. He's capitulated, and absolutely no threat, so it matters not. We need better intel on the others anyways, Mansa included as he is Fred's vassal. Also going to lay off on some EPs vs Sury, as he's in a bad way right now (less military than Mansa) and will probably not survive.

Assembly Line in next turn, and Asoka is almost done Communism. We'll see if we can broker it from him, although I hesitate to hand over Assembly Line, as Asoka is still buddies with Mansa and Fred.

Ok, well still a check of our civ to ensure it's in proper working order.

The first thing I do is liberate Ahmedabad to Asoka. Whee, we get +1 with him, and no more liability next turn. The free Cav goes to Delhi. Bleys did a good job leaving a firebreak of Indian cities protecting us from our potential enemies.

Spoiler :
Thebes is working on a Security Bureau. Probably unnecessary in the back end of our empire, but extra EPs are always good. 3 turns anyways, and we can't really afford to take on more units at the moment. Assembly Line next turn for Infantry means we can go nuts there.

Memphis is at -1 health and still growing like a weed with no visible hammers. Oh wait, towns make hammers now so we can actually build stuff. Market done next turn, but that doesn't help the health at all. Move off the pure food farms to work the lakes for extra commerce and to stall growth. Hmm, it seems Bleys whipped the market here, oh well. We'll need some cathedrals here to raise the happy cap, so we can hire the specs we need.

Helio is making 7 food per turn and about to grow next turn, but also about to hit the health cap. Move off the 3 pure food farms to work high hammer tiles like this place is supposed to. Grocer in 3 to help the health.

Elephantine is set to grow in 3, university in 8. We will need health here to max out the population. The tiles are thoughtfully min-maxed for commerce to stall out growth, even after Biology. Good job on this one team!

Alexandria is similarly tricked out, however after Bio, we will have odd food. We'll cross that bridge if we ever get to it though. Market in 6... Uh what? Market? In Alexandria? The 13 commerce in the city won't benefit too much from that, so order a security bureau (since we are avoiding too many units).

Pi-Ram has ugly Indian culture all over it causing WYTJOM unhappiness... We also have a scientist hired for... no apparent reason, since he could be working a gold mine instead for way more raw commerce, and hammers... Grocer in 2 to help the health cap. Happy cap is nuts though, no need for assistance on that front. Our tech rate needs no help, so I reassign the spec to be an artist to try and suppress some of that ugly foreign culture.

Giza is stagnant at a population of 8, cannot work the iron mine, and is building research. Change to a security bureau.

Ainu looks good, but we're about to run into a problem here in that we can only support 3 more population, as we have no farms and cannot help this place out even after Bio.

Gem City will max out its own pop eventually. Almost done a security bureau, which appears to have been whipped. I reassign the scientist as a merchant, because we have +100% gold multipliers here as opposed to the +60% research multipliers.

Lisbon is about to get another production shot with a Levee in 3 turns. This is great, but we'll be stuck making fast units here.

Lagos is still Lagos. Nothing has changed. Next...

Evora is building a Customs House when it has ZERO foreign trade routes. And Bleys whipped it >.<. Well, maybe it lost the trade routes when it shrunk, so whatever. Not a huge deal, at the back end of our empire.

Coimbra simply gets a specialist reassignment (priest to merchant, to take advantage of multipliers).

Oporto is going to be in a sticky situation of shrinkage when it grows in 9 turns. I'll see if I can run over a farm to stop it, as we need a supermarket to fix the odd food here.

Braga is a commerce city with no commerce multipliers. It needs help, but it is unlikely we will get to it before the game is over.

Tokyo also gets a spec reassignment to take advantage of gold multipliers. Building a university in 6 turns.

Kyoto is now our frontline production city, as evidenced by the presence of Ironworks in about 9 turns. I hijack some farms for it to grow it faster, and it needs them for the mines anyways.

Nara has no lighthouse, so not sure why we are building a harbor first... It is done next turn thanks to a whip, but we need a lighthouse here or the city will never grow.

Osaka has been styled as a commerce center and is running scientists instead of merchants despite the multiplier difference (Bleys even whipped a bank to finish next turn). I fix that, and fire all the specs except the free one, to grow the cottages.

Kags is still obviously in a culture hole thanks to Fred. His culture is now at 33%, so problem there. We whipped a harbor here, but that doesn't help Kags at all. We needed a cathedral or something, as I can eek out 60cpt with specs right now. Will see to that as soon as I can.

Satsuma is in a similar problem, but at least there is no German culture in the city proper. We whipped a Confucian Temple, which makes ZERO sense, as we could've whipped an Islamic temple for the same price, plus an extra 2 hammers per turn afterwards. We hired an artist, but again it is little help to this place.

Byblos needs a lot of things. We probably would've been better off not building it, but I'll do what I can with it. A courthouse has just been whipped.

Agra has a mish mash of stuff taken from Asoka. We just whipped a temple here (thankfully of the right religion), but were some reason building a Buddhist Stupa. We need no cultural help here, but we are missing a courthouse, and we could use a lot of other things before a Stupa. This town has a pop of 7 and a happy cap of 21 (although slightly impaired due to various things).

Bombay is working on a Library, and it seems that is one of the last things we should have built in this town. We make an uninspiring 29 raw commerce here, but the Confucian Shrine is in this city, so we really needed a market/bank, etc... I'll let the Library finish next turn before looking back here.

Madurai is your characteristic sucker punch city. We have room to work another 3 land tiles (that make 1 food each), and honestly there aren't that many good tiles to work anyways. A library here is, again, not necessary, and we are missing things like a forge. We have already put hammers here, so it will finish.

Lahore is also building a Library... It appears to have come with an Obs and a Theatre, and we could run an artist if we really wanted to. I will again let this Library finish, as it is more than half done, and I don't want to waste precious pop whipping, especially since we have a food problem here.

Hyderabad is out of revolt next turn, but lacks a granary, so I switch to that. Basics here...

Banglore gets a border pop next turn, but that doesn't help it much, because it still can't grow. There is a grass cottage that we could possibly demolish for a farm, but likely not worth the effort.

Delhi still revolting for 3 turns. Working on an unnecessary Theatre. Lots of buildings survived the capture, but a forge and a courthouse were not among them. I dial for a forge first, subject to change if the maintenance is ludicrous.

Calcutta is stagnant, but hiring an extra priest instead of working a marble mine...

Pata still in revolt for 3 turns.

And we're finally done with the cities. Revolt to Emanci to get rid of the anger, but keep OR so we can finish our buildings faster.

Now making 80gpt...

Whack end turn.

1742AD (381):

set7assemblyline.jpg

Pentagon for the :hammer:.

Fred takes Angkor Wat and Rajavihara in the inturn. Sury borders are in full retreat. Fred gets Assembly Line in 2 turns, and uber factories with them, damnit.

Hyderabad is out of revolt and starving... Clearly Agra is taking its farms, so hand them back over to stagnant it. Granary is clearly not necessary, as the city is maxed, so dial a courthouse to handle the 10gpt maintenance. We cannot immediately mine the coal without starving the city, so I farm a plains first.

Spread Islam to our last two cities...

Market done in Memphis, we are healthy again, but no more health buildings, so I halt growth and start a security bureau.

Ainu done a grocer and with limited food, we can afford to chew on a factory. 8 turns.

Gem city done the bureau, going to dial an aqueduct before I damage the health any more.

Lagos finishes the harbor, and I randomly select a theatre in 1 turn...

Evora is done the customs house, and is still not doing foreign trade... Ok, well dial a security bureau, as everywhere can use one.

Coimbra finished a market, so dial a jail for the upcoming times.

Braga done a harbor, and we might need health, except that we will probably not be able to grow much more. Dial for a Levee.

Nara also done its harbor, and it goes straight for the lighthouse.

Osaka finishes a bank, dial for a university. We have a settled GS here, so great.

Harbor done in Kags, it never got a forge and has more than enough health.

Satsuma finished the Confucian Temple, so dial an Islamic one. The massive overflow finishes it next turn.

Courthouse done in Byblos, dial for an Islamic Temple. I look at how horrible this place is, and then just put it on perma spies afterwards (Alt-click for perma spies, feel free to clear if you want).

Bombay finished a Library and has a clear food problem. Not enough food, and a broken irrigation chain to boot, resulting in a completely useless farm (provides nothing).

set7uselessfarm.jpg

I dial for a temple, with a jail queued so I won't have to come back...

As for techs, we can trade for Sci Meth, DR, and Astro, so it is a toss up between RR and Facism. Facism gets us Rushmore and a free GG, as no one is even near it, and rails gets us... well, rails... I dial Facism as it is cheaper. Rails ARE useful, but I also want the free general, and Fred is almost done assembly line... so can't stall too long.

Calcutta finished the temple and dials a forge.

Thebes is our highest hammer town, so putting off the bureau there for 14 turns to build the Pentagon.

1744AD (382):

Sury shows up and demands that we cancel our deals with the Germans. Obviously, Sury hates us already, and we aren't willing to reveal our hand just yet, so I send him packing. He is now Furious with us, lol.

EPs start catching up to Mansa, and it appears he is about to get Artillery. Well, this is honestly going to get ugly...

Fred is about to get Assembly Line... Soo...

set7fredtrade.jpg

I take everything he's got.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, might as well see what we can get for it eh?

set7asokatrade.jpg

Asoka don't want to give us DR, but whatever...

We find lots of oil in our territory, including offshore from the perennial dump Lagos...

Grocer done in Pi-Ram, so dial for a bureau.

Lagos finished a Theatre, so also dial for a bureau...

Satsuma finished a temple, and there's basically nothing much else we can do for the place until it somehow rescues its BFC. Cathedrals will take too long and we will likely be done with Germany by then... I dial a bureau, as that is always needed...

Banglore Temple -> Forge

Fred going for Facism in 9... We get it in 4.

1746AD (383):

Mansa got artillery this turn. However, we still need physics from him. I do this deal...

set7mansatrade.jpg

Still missing DR, but not crying about it :p. Uranium pops all over our empire...

Delhi is out of revolt but starving like nuts. It needs its border pop next turn. Forge in 4 can stay...

I buyout some upgrades for our troops...

Grocer done in Helio... Factory is up, followed by a duct...

Gem city done duct... Dial a factory...

Levee done in Lisbon, hurting for health, so go for a duct...

Sending a cav to take a look at our buddy Fred...

1748AD (384):

Mansa gets a GG, and it seems that Fred is short on troops on the home front... Probably time to strike soon...

Facism in next turn... Will cut slider for upgrade money.

Nara Lighthouse -> Jail

Our useless vassal says WFYABTA... god...

Delhi has its BFC back, so I can stop the starvation, but we still have pissed off people...

1750AD (385):

Facism comes in. Exciting... Hernan Cortes arrives for free in Pi-Ram. He gets fortified with a sign.

We get an AP vote, and I obviously vote for us.

Mansa is going for Rocketry in 32, wow... I dial us rails, but shut off research for a turn or two for upgrades. lol, rails in 91 is better than Asoka... I'll turn it back on it a bit...

Fred basically has 3 unit garrisons... so should be easy... His troops are probably holding down Sury, although I cannot see right now...

Lisbon duct -> Factory, and then we rock and roll!

Kags forge... uh... Mosque...

Mad Library -> forge

Lahore Library -> forge

Pata temple -> Factory. This place is already decent, and will be set to make units when a barracks is up.

1752AD (386):

Peace ends with Fred and Company...

The vote comes in and we win by 4 votes lol.

Crap lol, I blundered into a Diplo victory O.o...

Well... our score is 104355 normalized and we win an Augustus Ceasar rating... For comparison, NCSG3 gave us a score of 40934, so I guess big points for an earlier victory... Don't know if a Diplo victory is more respected (yay for vassals voting for us).

So uh... yeah... I totally did not expect that, so I had to replay the game from 1748 to get the 1750 save before I hit enter... So there MAY be minor discrepancies with the save... (like me not boosting tech for one turn to finish Facism faster...)

Ok, so let's all laugh. Despite the fact that we botched the early religious part, we still managed to backdoor ourselves into a "religious" victory, lmao...

Well, the decision was to finish this off as soon as we could, I guess that just happened to be sooner than we thought, congratulations
