Trained Levies

The Ordinary Purzan who is tired of his work, joined his local Chief for an adventure on sea or on the land for the great good of the Kingdom. They will be poor fighters at first but will learn as they go. Eventually, they can become a hardened warrior dedicated to honor and glory greater than any other who came only for the salary and duty.

Actually, I can't describe them. Trained Levies? Voluntary Recruits? Voluntary Warriors? Give them a name and make them cheep. Perhaps weaker than a spearman. (Who I think is a professional) and perhaps after many battles better?

Or maybe let nations make Levies? Citizens called to battle? Only that the Purzan uses it so much it is common in the army.

Idk, tell me your idea.

Or just have 3 UUs. Citizen Warriors is the cheepest. After battle I can use an EP to turn them into Rough Riders or Sea Stalkers (Marines) or just have that to happen, it is like the vikings, citizens tired of the landscape join in an adventure, becomming better until it becomes a professional..

Would Adorin ships be able to go to that new jungle place?

Yes, but an expedition there would require a good number of ships, due to the fact that the voyage is long and Sea Monsters(who I'd really like named) are going to be around for part of the trip. Expect many ships to sink or their crew die of starvation.

Also: 1 UU per nation. No more than that.

You can tell me that you want to use levies in your orders, but they won't be shown in stats. They'll be ordinary citizens whom have grabbed a weapon to desperately fight off a foe.

Your trained levie idea could serve as a UU. They're pretty bad quality, but are better than normal levies and are very numerous.

My people call them the Yshulac (will show up in story)

Business Minded

It was almost nightfall, as Admiral Kar could see the sun just above the waves of the ocean, and most of the ships were returning to port. The port was heavily crowded with merchants, sailors, soldiers, and foreigners. He'd get home late again tonight, there were more than usual shipments from western lands. But one thing caught his attention: one of the ships was carrying the carcass of the sea monster on board. The beast was lifeless, hanging over the beam, and the couple of Sea Warriors were practicing javelin with it as a target. Admiral Kar took notice.

When that particular ship came to port, moored and secured,, he called the Master of the Ship, Heth. The sun was halfway below the sea, and soldiers were unloading the goods, ready to go home.

"Yes, sir?" replied Heth, Master of the Ship. He was anxious to get home, and disliked how he was called up at this time.

"Master, I want you to take that sea monster's carcass, don't you throw it away in the sea, and bring it over to the barracks."

"What on earth for? No pun intended, of course, admiral."

"Just order the port guards to take it over to the second storage, then you may retire home to your wife and kids."

"Very well, sir," Heth replied, happy to get home quicker than he thought. "Soldiers! Get that filthy thing off the ship and stow it in the second storage!"

The soldiers paused for a moment, with a weird expression on their faces, but complied immediately.

"You two," pointed Admiral Kar at the soldiers, "follow me."

The second storage was one of the hundreds in the port city of Adorin. But this time of the month, the first through tenth storage was empty, the goods sailed west only last morning. The soldiers whom Admiral Kar called dragged the sea monster into the storage.

"Now," began the admiral, "you may be wondering why you are here. You may be anxious to get home, but consider yourselves lucky. You two might soon be one of the richest in Adorin."

Obviously, the soldiers were oblivious, so Admiral Kar began to explain.

"Well, you see, soldiers, we've been having lots of troubles with these monsters, and yet, only thing we've been getting were losses. Now, I'm a soldier, like yourselves, but before I joined the navy, I was a merchant. And merchant knows when he sees an opportunity for profit."

They were still confused, or uninterested.

"Take a look at that carcass. How old is it?"

"It was only killed yesterday, sir. We, the sailors and Sea warriors, call them Velarki, literally sea monsters, in sea terms. There are many more if you sent a search party to the beach."

"So, still fresh. Any one of you tried eating that thing? You know, when food runs out?"

"Yes, sir. Not this voyage - we went to Carolina, you see - but during the one before to Kourstani, we were almost out of food, so one of the soldiers tried eating it. We all tried to stop him, but he stole a piece at night."

"Anything happen to him?"

"No, sir. But still, none of us would dare to touch that thing, but as soon as the food emptied, there was no question to it."

"And how was that?"

"Actually, sir, it wasn't all that bad. Just like any other squids or octopi around the area. But it turned out more nutritious than regular sized of their kinds."

"Very good. Anything else we can do with these monsters?"

"Well, sir, every time we hurl a spear at their big eyes, these weird fluid substances come out, as well as oily stuff. The oils, we used to light candles onboard, but the substance, not poisonous, but foul smelling things, they are, we throw away."

"Hmm... I see. Well, the doctors might know if they can be used for anything. Alright, soldiers, I want you to cut this beast up and give them to the Royal Doctor, and give the bones and other hard stuff to the craftsmen. I want to see what they can do with it. If these stuff sell, there will be more than enough volunteers to hunt these beasts... Velarki down, without government expense, and perhaps we can sell them to inland nations! Get to it, boys!"

Admiral eyed the carcass of the beast, as if he was looking at his own early retirement, as it was moved by the soldiers.

In the Bay of Tears, where the Tachnen River runs into the sea (that is what Izentear calls the branch of the river we are on.)

The first man to try was snapped in half. Everyone else stepped back leery of the creature. “Sir we have corralled one of the Yshulac beasts in the bay as requested, but I don’t think this is going to work.” Spoke one of the frightened sailors.

“No one asked your opinion did they? The King has directed we do this so we will learn how.” First Captain Deshane turned back to look at the monstrosity. “We will continue until we can use these beasts. They are a gift from Izen if we are smart enough to use them properly.” At mention of the Goddess of the Sea all the sailors put the back of their fist to their chest as proper respect dictated. “Did all of you men give well to the sea before we departed on this mission?” A hearty chorus of “Aye!” answered back. “Then fear not for the great Goddess of the Sea will grant us success!”

Several days passed until the Yshulac (it means lord of the water) had finally tired and was now beginning to respond to the commands of the tamers as it was too weary to do anything else and was lead to an area designed to contain it. “Well men,” said Captain Deshane, “we have done it!” First Captain Deshane walked back to the cabin and sat with his Second Captain. “Now all we have to do is get a few more of the Yshulac and then we can breed them ourselves to obey us.” They shared a tired smile at the thought of the eventual success.

After several years:

A great crowd sat on the docks and along the waterline of Izentia as they watched the first of the Yshulac Tamers lead their beasts out to show them that even the fearsome creatures could be brought under control. High Priestess Endia of Izen walked out and spoke thusly unto the crowd. “People of Izentear see how she still blesses her people!” waving an arm at the great beasts, “We will no longer be afraid of the Yshulac as even they cannot stop us from going forth into the Goddesses’ Seas!” She paused letting the silence be broken by on until one of the Yshulac cried out and rent the silence in twain. It was not a fearful sound any longer; the people of Izen understood the beasts now and could even use them. The celebration lasted long into the night as the aged King Daimen Cia’Izen saw that his people would prosper even when his time finally came. The thought was reassuring as he went to see his wife and their new twin girls.

To Kourstani
Fron Purzan

Soban resides in a desert with its only city in a key oasis. If we take that oasis we would like to claim it while you receive free trade. We, of the council, agree to work together. We will set up a plan to put down this nuisence for the best of all.

To: Purzan
From: Kourstani

This is agreeable to us, if you would supply us with some ships after claiming the city, we are a stout people, but are not very good with wood-working. We cannot build large ships, but we would like to own a few. 5 ships would do well to help us out, and in return we will provide you with 200 Spearmen, 200 Ax-men, and 100 Pony-riders to help you claim the city.

Agreed. We will supply with 5 new ships and 5 more to do as you liked as my war Chief Havif and your war leader lead the expedition.

deadline for orders?

Can you let 'Raiders/Marines/Tribal Warriors' in? Raiders are those skilled mostly in sword and bow and are good for raids and acceptable in ship to ship as pirates. Marines are ship only and are better than raiders. Tribal warriors are land equivelent of raiders but better. The country choses one and it means that either (hidden) they have large amout of raiders that support the economy and perhaps put down other bandits or Marines (not hidden) or Tribal warriors as helpers in the military.

Li, such things should really be sent as a PM so that you gain an advantage rather than tell us all about it.

Also, your "navy" can do all these things without tying up a UU slot, or instead do it as a secret project.

Right now I could be paying for form a vast pirate fleet that would be pillaging your trade routes, or I could build camps deep in my jungles in order to train up troops in that warfare, in preperation to attack the other nations in my cradle..

etc etc etc...

I think you would be surprised how much your nation can do without having to have it specifically written about in the rules, or even mentioned in an update.

There is much going on the the background of a NES most never see. :ninja:

If you ever run a successful NES, once you see some peoples schemes and orders you will be amazed how much secrets there are!

This alive, you get all orders in or what?

Well, seeing as how Charles isn't expected to be back until the 27th and Iggy's activity is rather irregular, I'm planning on starting the update tomorrow.

If someone who hasn't sent in orders is reading this, quickly send in orders. Every set of orders helps. I also encourage people lurking to join. With three distinct cradles, you can make many diverse countries now.

Update 2: Calm Before

This time period was rather quiet. While wars were still going on and barbarians lurked along the borders of civilized people, bloodshed was minimal. However, dangers are beginning to emerge that threaten this period of peace.

First we look at the war in the jungles of the north. Skorak has begun a vicious push southward into Potl territory. However, while Skorak had the advantage of horsemen, they weren’t very useful in the attacks due to the battlefields of this war often being jungles. However, small areas around towns had been cleared of trees by the Potl, making horsemen the favored troop when it came to raiding towns.

Skorak pushed south-east, making sure that Lotl could not interfere with the attacks on Potl. This was perhaps a good move as Lotl looked poised to strike Potl at any moment. First attacks were very successful with the Potl being pushed back to the south. However, constant raids by the Lotl and now war with Skorak began affecting the tactics of Potl armies. The Potl started to use the spear more as their standard weapon. Hit-and-run tactics were used heavily in this war.

Skorak has now pushed Potl south with its overwhelming numbers. However, these gains are sour has small pockets of resistance lay hidden in the jungle making it difficult to hold on to any land. The Lotl seem to be unusually quiet, sitting in their treetops while wars rage on the jungle floor.

The war in the jungles is not the only war being waged. The combined forces of Kourstani and Purzan marched across many miles to attack Soban. The Kourstani Pony-Riders were especially useful in this campaign, bring with them supplies needed for a long journey. Purzan’s cavalry also proved important as they scouted ahead, dispatching barbarians before they could cause trouble to the main army.

And finally the allied army reached their destination, Soban. Many had died on their way to Soban, mostly from dehydration and lack of rest. The numbers were about even, the allies having a slight advantage. However, the Sobanians had the advantage of the oasis.

Their city was centered around a great oasis, giving them a vital supply of water and farmland. While the allies sat outside of the great city desert winds battered them, almost mocking their futile attempt to get into the city. An attack on the city was impossible.

The troops attempted a siege, but that failed utterly. The generals ordered a retreat back to friendly lands. During their journey back they were raided by horsemen dispatched by Soban to add insult to injury. However, the journey proved one thing: Soban clearly didn’t want to fight the allies head on. While the allies numbers are larger than Soban’s, it’s only a matter of time before the nomads of the desert swell its armies to a size of gigantic proportions.

Other than the failure at Soban, Kourstani and Purzan have been doing fairly well. Barbarian raids are becoming less common, although this is most likely due to barbarians flocking to Soban. Trade routes over land are becoming more trouble than they’re worth, so sea trade is becoming very important. This has delivered a blow to Kourstani economy, but trade with Adorin and other costal nations has helped soften that blow.

Speaking of costal nations, Caronia has experienced a wave of change. First of those changes is the change of its name. Its new name is The Republic of Tarkaur, eliminating the previous name given to the land by the tyrant Caro. Another change, perhaps more important, is a new capital city named Boskos. These changes along with new patrols are making Tarkaur less of a symbol of crime and more of a symbol of change. With its new name and capital, will Tarkaur head into a new era of prosperity?

In Izentear great things are afoot. The sea beasts, better known as Yshulac by the Izentear citizens have begun being tamed. While the method takes months, even years, it yields acceptable results. Trained Yshulac are rather difficult to control, but offer a good solution to fighting wild ones and securing trade routes.

Adorin has taken a different approach with the Yshulac. Sea Warriors have been killing them at a fast rate. Some of the richer citizens of Adorin are even getting Yshulac goods, eating their flesh and using Yshulac oil into various perfumes. Yshulac are becoming less of a menace and more of a tool for some countries.

Along with its new Yshulac hunting tendencies, Adorin has begun putting limits on who can go into its lands. Badges have been made to show who citizens and foreigners are. Those whom don’t posses a badge are arrested. This has lead to very secure borders. With more expansion along the river and the Yshulac becoming profitable a resource Adorin is becoming incredibly wealthy and powerful.

Mikuena seems fairly quiet. The insane obelisk people have been driven a good distance away from Mikuena’s borders. Trade continues to flow in from countries up north, making Mikuena rulers see no need to expand or do anything in particular.

And lastly, we go to a continent to the east. On it, great forests offer great amounts of timer and fire wood. Natives of this area seem very at peace with nature, living off the land. However, an organized chiefdom had arisen, Watuki. Its position on the Srit River has given it easy access to fish and good farmland. These rugged people are relatively new to civilization, but what they lack in technology they make up for with sheer skill and determination. Whether or not this leads to success has yet to be seen.

OOC: More players are always welcomed.

@Abaddon Consider your geography when using your troops. Horsemen probably aren't going to fair to well in a jungle.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a single player vs. player war yet.

Expect stats and close-up maps tomorrow.
