PRESIDENTAL ELECTIONS IN FINLAND 1904

New, democratic Finland is finaly going to get a leader selected by the people, as people will vote for their favourite candidate to be the president of Finland for the next 6 years! Originally there were five candidates, but two of them have withdrawn themselves from the competition – including prime minister Santeri Alkio, who, by leaving the competition, is hoping to get more votes to Tanner and Ståhlberg, to ensure that Svinhufvud of the conservatives won’t get selected. Before we get to the result of the elections, let’s introduce the candidates..

Väinö Tanner – Leader of the social-democrat party since 1895, Tanner has brought democracy back to Finland by a coup which he organized one year ago. Since then he has been the temporary head of state. His agenda is to drive Finland towards Germany in foreign policy and to drive Finland towards social equality in domestic policies. Tanner is also the only candidate with a Finnish name, which would make him the choice for the patriotic liberals who might not like their own Fenno-Swedish candidate, Ståhlberg.

K. J. Ståhlberg – One of the most important characters of the central-rightist and liberal Progression Party, Ståhlberg is a known lawyer who strictly believes in democracy and parliamentarism. Altough he drives some rightist policies, his main agenda is to find unity between the leftists and the rightists, which would include giving some ground to the social-democrats – such as Germany-based foreign policy, which Ståhlberg would like very much despite his Fenno-Swedish heritage. This doesn’t change the fact that when it comes down to domestic economic policies, Ståhlberg is a strict believer of free market and commercial liberalism.

P. E. Svinhufvud – The most well-known politician of the rightist Conservative Party and former king Pauli I’s “right hand”, Svinhufvud is pretty much the only one of the leading politicians of the last decade who isn’t imprisoned at the moment. His agenda is strictly rightist: foreign policy includes breaking all ties with Germany for as long as they are communist, and domestically he would not allow the social-democrats to be in the cabinet – he openly admits that if he gets selected, he will use the presidental right to dissolve the parliament and order new parliamentary elections, so the current government would have to retire and he could appoint a new, “anti-socialist” government for the nation.

***

And now, to the results of the first round of the presidential elections, held in january 16th 1904:

VÄINÖ TANNER (social-democrats) – 41 %
K. J. STÅHLBERG (progressive party) – 30 %
P. E. SVINHUFVUD (conservatives) – 29 %

Since none of the candidates received the majority of votes, there will be a new round exactly one month from now in which P. E. Svinhufvud will not participate anymore, since he got the least amount of votes in this round. According to expert’s analysis, prime minister Alkio’s last minute withdrawal saved Ståhlberg from being dropped from the second round. Now it is very unlikely for Tanner to win now, because Svinhufvud’s voters are almost certainly not going to give their vote to a social-democrat..

Results of the second round of the presidential elections, held in february 16th 1904:

VÄINÖ TANNER (social-democrats) – 44 %
K. J. STÅHLBERG (progressive party) – 56 %

As expected, almost everyone voting for Svinhufvud in the first round gave their vote to Ståhlberg in the second, and with 56 % of all votes, Ståhlberg is now the president of the Republic of Finland for the next 6 years.

All hail to president Ståhlberg!

Ståhlberg’s speech after defeating Tanner:
“Citizens of Finland, kansalaiset, medborgaren! I believe that receiving the support of 56 % of voters in these elections is a clear sign that in the end, most Finns do not want the cultural diversity between the rightists and the leftists that has torn our nation apart and already lowered our cultural level! I believe that most Finns want the same thing as I do: that when we look at each other in the eyes, we don’t see a communist, or a pro-monarchist.. I hope that we will just see another Finn, a person who comes from the same people, the same nation, as I do. To achieve this, my friends, we need to be understanding towards the demands of both the leftists and the rightists. In foreign policies, we must put our trust in a great power without looking at their form of government with prejudice! People’s Republic of Germany, which has helped Finland become a civilized, democratic nation, is such a superpower, and hopefully they will become Finland’s closest trading partner and military ally during my 6-year term!
With these words.. may the re-unification of the Finnish people and the Finnish culture begin!”

Alkio’s government resigns – Castren to form a new one
Prime Minister Santeri Alkio of the Agrarian League, a good friend of Ståhlberg who shares the same ideology, didn’t want to be in the way of Ståhlberg’s new “national unification program” by running a very leftist government. As a result, he decided to retire, so Ståhlberg wouldn’t have to dissolve the parliament. Ståhlberg appointed Kaarlo Castren of the central-liberal Progression Party – which drives the same agenda as the president does – to form a new government. Quickly, a new central-liberal government was made out of Progression Party, Agrarian League and the Karelian Alliance. Former Prime Minister Alkio is now the minister of domestic affairs.

VOTING FOR THE PARLIAMENT’S SUPPORT FOR THE NEW GOVERNMENT
As stated before, in Finland a government has to have the support of the majority of the parliament or it must resign. Can Castren’s new government survive this test, since the government parties (progression, agrarian and karelian) have alltogether only 37 MP’s out of 200?

YAY – 127
NAY – 73

For everyone’s utter amazement, the social-democrats decided to support this government! Perhaps they feared that if this government would fall because of them, president Ståhlberg would get back at them by making the infamous Conservative Party to form the next government. Or perhaps they just didn’t want to become known as THE party that wrecked the national unification program. Either way, experts have analyzed that Castren’s new central government will almost certainly give in to some socialist demands in their policies, since if the social-democrats would withdraw their support, this government would collapse immediately.

DIPLOMACY:
From president Ståhlberg of Finland
To People's Republic of Germany:
We thank you, our closest ally, for your help.

ORDERS:
-grow navy
-grow education
-begin freeing the economical markets in the spirit of economical liberalism. most foreign trade is to be directed towards Germany.
-start a new project, "the national unification program". Unify the culture by trying to make compromises between the leftists and the rightists, and by trying to get them work together, and by bringing out the best achievements of Finnish culture (composer Sibelius's legendary "Finlandia" symphony, for example).
+1 economy, +2 culture

To Scandinavia:
Will you give the islands to us if we let you keep one airport on it?

From: Scandinavia
To: Japan

Us abandoning our colony - even with an air base still ours - would be too much of a prestige loss. Again, if you offer a certain sum of money, it is a completely different story. Come on, at least a nominal sum.

I don't remember if I sent orders...
Increase Navy
Increase Education
Load as much airforce and army as possible on the navy and start heading south
Continue the NIP.

FROM GERMANY:
TO METO: Italy, Burgundy, Hungary:

We gave liberty to the alpine italians, let that be a sign for peaceful co-existance between us, lets start it by signing a 3 turn NAP

Erik Mesoy, I already have your orders, don't worry.

From: Italy and Hungary
To: Germany

Due to domestic situation, we cannot (yet) agree to such treaty. Hopefully soon we will be able to do so as soon as the afforementioned situation stabilizes.

Lacking orders from Amenhotep7, thebignastyone, Jason The King and IceEye.

ORDERS for now...
Continue economic expansion/stablization
Continue building a Professional Military
Ask God if the Seychelles/other islands are Madagascaran
Continue research on better engines/designes for the bi-plane.
(only 1 project at a time, correct?)
Begin the construction of a new fleet to the Madagascaran royal flotilla, with the flagship the largest battleship in the world: MFS India. The fleet will contain this battleship and her sister, five destroyers, five cruisers, three submarines, and eight frigates. So to not have a dire economic impact, the construction will be spread over a couple years, this year beginning with the construction of the battleship.

Thanks!

Yes, Jason, it is so.

New Flagship to be Built!

President Sergov has just passed a new bill for our fledging nation, guaranteeing a budget large enough for the navy to construct a new fleet with a star flagship. MFS India is expected to set sail on her first voyage in late October. When asked, the President blatantly put it "...and for the continue prosperity of our nation, I saw it fit to not only have a navy worthy of recognition, but to have a battleship so feared that no one would dare challenge the liberty and freedom of our beloved state."

India is under a full construction process in Sarinosko port, the most protected port in the south Indian. Here, engineers from all of Madagascar are coming to help design and build such a ship to be revered throughout the world. Continuing the press conference, President Sergov hoped "...to finally have an equal foot as Europe in the world." Most of the steel that is used to construct the ship is imported from Russia, while many of the engineers that are working so hard on the ship have won an education at one of Britain's or Germany's highly rated schools.

Industry is Top-Notch

After a world-wide survey, specialized economists of various nationalities have classified the industry and production in Madagascar Top-Notch and Technologically Advanced. This is the most prestene award, ranking the economy with the modern nations in Europe. This award was accepted by President Sergov with approval in a formal ceremony with Congress. When asked what his future plans were for the industry of Madagascar, President Sergov replied "...I plan to stimulate production and create a stablized environment for industry to gradually grow and level out. I plan to cut government aid in building new industry in hope that the private industry will flex their might."

Congressional Elections in February

Every two years the House of Lords in Congress must go under an election, where the people choose who best represents their region. Having served two years in February, the House of Lords is schuduled to have their regular elections in only a few months. It is expected that the Labor party will retain their more-then-needed majority, though many expect the Madagascar Communist Nation to gain a little steam. With examples from Germany and other prosperous communist nations, and with the growth of the common factory laborer, the party against capitalism is on the rise. To counter such a threat, President Sergov (Labor Party) and the Labor Congress has passed dozens of bills to protect the common laborer, including a 10-hour workday and safety regulations on factories.

The party many think will loose support is the Chernorossia party. With independence never looking so good, the feeling that Madagascar must return to Russia is dying. It is expected only a few seats will be held in the House by this party in the next year.

Official Name of the Nation

In a glorious ceremony on Friday, President Sergov signed a bill (that had already been passed through Congress) that officially changed the name of Chernorossia (the Russian colonial name of the island) to Madagascar. Ratings for the president continue to skyrocket after this signing and the numerous speeches the President has delivered throughout just these two years.

Should I wait for Amenhotep7 and thebignastyone? Or should I just update now?
