"A Republic is what Portugal has needed all along." - King of Portugal
The King sat in his chambers. They were very fancy, and lavished with golds and silks and such. It was a chamber fit for a king of his calibur. He had done so much, to try and help his people. But he failed, time and time again. The African colonization didnt work, the invasion of South America didn't work. His erratic foreign policiy which he thought would help his people, took away their entrie empire, and made his people despise him. They called for change.
Portugal had been a monarchy for as long as people remebered. It had never tried it's hand at Republican government. The people knew what they wanted though. They had too. The King obviously didn't.
He still loved his people, and was going to do what they wanted. He slowly inched toward his desk.
He signed the proposed constituiton, which outline that every white male who was over 21 and a follower of the church, and not convicted of crimes, could vote for senators and such. That every person could bear arms, could protest peacefully, could serve their country. That every person had a right to live. That every person must be given a trial even if they were blantly guilty. That they would not have their property searched or seized without law. It wasn't as radical as say Umberto's reforms, but its what the people wanted.
He signed it.
King of Portugal

The king left his chambers. He slowly walked out of his palace and to the Liberal headquarters. They were shocked, but with happiness. The king had accepted their demands. Surely this was the right choice, that Portugal could now crush the rebels up North, live a peaceful life of trade, and prosper.
The King had a differnt Idea in mind. The Federated Kingdoms would pay for their attacks. And if he couldnt do it as king, he would convince the new government.
After all, he was for the people.

It had been many months. The Republic assumed power. The people were very happy. Nationalism was widespread. The King wasn't at the throne and the people could make their own descions. No more foolish wars. No more invasions. They could live peacefully. That is, until he came.
He was always there. It was the King. He had asked to speak to Parliament in secret, and after alot of reluctance they finally accepted. He was of course nervous, but if this idea of his got accepted, he thought he could save Portugal.
"My fellow Portugese, you all know me as your King. I come to you with a breif proposal."
"Well speak up then King." said a clearly anti-Monarchial senator
The King knew theese men didn't like him at all. They still beleived he was out for his own intrests. He hoped to prove them wrong.
"Well dear Senator, I will be breif. So do not worry."
"I call for war with the FK."
The Senators began to rouse around, a few even leaving.
"Well King, you haven't changed. We don't even need to consider it. I could hold a vote at this moment, and it would be struck down."
"That may be, may not. I still wish to explain my reasoning."
"We will hear you King, but do not expect to succeed."
"Our Empire, is gone as you gentlemen know. Why? I ask."
"Because of the French!" shouted one Senator
"Because of the foolish Portugese king." shouted another
"You may think so senators, but it is the Federated-Kingdoms fault. They are imperialist fools. They annexed every last colony of ours. We lost our army, our navy, and most importantly, our honor. We were beaten on the field by Indians! Is this the Portugese Empire? Is this the new Portugese Republic?"
Some men calmed, and listened. Others were still roudy.
"We must restore our place in the world. As you gentlemen know, France is quickly falling under the FK. Why care about them you say? We don't, at least not the puppet Republicans or the filthy provisonal government."
"We do know Macmahon is an honorable man. When his country was going to surrender, he still is fighting. He is frances last hope. Is he does not win, France will be annexed like our dear colonies were."
"We must take revenge against the tyrants. They preach Democracy, but oppress! They are imperialists! They must be shown Portugal will not waiver!"
People were really listening now.
"We must bring back Portugal the way it was! Not an unjust Monarchy, for even I know that the people need a voice. But for a stronger Portugal. For us to fufill our God-Given place in this world."
"We must do this for the people."
"For Portugal!"
The King was still very nervous and discouraged, but the senators went to vote nonetheless
