The Byzantine General Staff hadn't yet been fully created and integrated into the structure of the military, but the generals and admirals that made it up still existed...and still argued. One of the two civilians present, the megas logothetes Spiridon Kyriakides, sighed as he was bombarded with questions from the irate strategoi.
"Why, logothete, are we to simply give this land away? We won it be=y the blood of our soldiers and the blood of the Krakowians!"
"I have told you many times, stratopedarch Dodismos, that it is demanded by our allies and is a matter of both course and statesmanship to do so."
"Why all the politicking, logothete? Why should the Germans have that land? Illyria used to be a great Byzantine territory, even through the times of the Bulgar Khanate! Why should we be forced to give it up to some Northern barbarians?"
"Do not forget, megas doux, that the nation of Krakow had conquered those lands before we took them from them. They have a right to that land, too."

We just thought, that for all your posturing of being civilized, it would be interesting to see how you respond when given the civil option. Don't disappoint us.

True, true. But then again, if they are neutral, France has Russia flanked with the Growing Japan. In fact, the Sino-Japanese war could escalate into said conflict....

OOC: Except Russia has rather more to gain by backstabbing China, regaining the territory it lost, getting roughly 2 TCs, and fully securing a Pacific port. Engaging with China would also necessarily mean going against Portugal, the nation with the second most TCs behind France... in general, it would boil down to the world vs. Russia and China. We all know, historically, how those types of arrangements wind up.
For the record, I couldn't care less about the barren, frozen wasteland that is Siberia, and really don't care what Russia does so long as it doesn't bother me. I've already laid out what I want.
