RE: Visitation of Facilities
I hereby request your presence at the Ezo [1] Training Facility for evaluation and input on our training methods and our newest recruits. After our discussions in Kyoto, I would be grateful to receive your presence here. May your journey be pleasant.
Sincerely,
天道 早雲
Tendo Soun”
Pip reread through the letter, voicing it aloud the second time. Some of the French was rather strangely constructed – it was obviously translated by someone, but that was to be expected. It was also rather curt but from what he could remember of Shoushou Tendo from the meeting, he was not excessively verbose, so it also was not too out of place. Still, it seemed an odd request. He looked up from the letter to Seras and felt an eyebrow twitch. She was wearing a khaki outfit remarkably similar to her own, and had a large canvas duffle bag slung over one shoulder. At her feet was another, presumably for him. He glanced at it, then up to her, feeling an eyebrow twitch at her beaming smile. “And were do you zink you’re going?”
“To Matsumae, of course,” she answered in chipper English. He exhaled and turned the letter around, pointing at the “TO:” line. “Do you zee ‘Victoria Seras’ written here anywhere,” he asked. She shrugged and, gripping the strap of the bag securely, started to walk toward the door – right by Pip. He held an arm out sideways in her path “You know zey don’t think very highly of women,
non?”
She glanced to one side at him and shrugged with a smile “May as well get down to changing that then.”
She pushed his arm aside, and before he could say another word she was out the door. With a sigh and a muttered curse, Pip took a few steps forward, picked up the other duffle, and followed her, shutting the door behind him. He knew that Tendo’s hope for a pleasant journey would likely
not be fulfilled…

EZO TRAINING FACILITY, MATSUMAE, MATSUMAE HAN, EZO

Pip shivered and pulled his coat tighter around himself as another blast of wind roared across the training ground. Matsumae, for all its position at the southern end of Ezo, was still not a very forgiving place, most especially in the dead of winter. As he shuddered again he snuck a glance over at Seras. She seemed not in the least phased and was watching the various recruits go through their marching drills. Pip followed her gaze and tried to pay attention to get his mind off the cold. Although his Japanese could still not quite be called fluent, he knew more than enough to understand that the
Gunsou’s shouts of “
Baka” and “
Kusoyaro” when a recruit messed up were not kindly suggestions. The expression on his face was more than enough to carry that across clearly, though. After they had gone through perhaps half an hour of drill, Seras turned to him and whispered “Ask him if they’ve learned Self Defense yet.”
Pip raised an eyebrow before clearing his throat and asking the
Gunsou the question. His response was to turn and look at the recruits with seeming contempt, before looking back and giving a grudging nod and a “
Hai” in response. Seras smiled and clapped her hands together before taking a few steps forward, shouting back to Pip “Tell him to send one at me.”
Pip blinked and raised an outstretched finger in protest “Are you zure you want—“ but was cut off by perhaps the iciest glare he’d ever seen. Twitching an eyebrow at her insistence he relayed the request. The
Gunsou was equally shocked and likewise began to protest, but was in turn overridden by Pip – he had been invited here by the
Shoushou so he must be of some importance. The
Gunsou surveyed the lot behind him and then pointed at a particularly large recruit (for a Japanese, anyway) “
Kisama!"
He then turned and swung his finger toward Seras “
Batsu!”
The recruit seemed every bit as bewildered at the request, never before having been ordered to do something quite so ridiculous "
W-Watashi, Gunsou-sama?!"
But the
Gunsou would have none of it, as it wasn’t going to be his head on
Shoushou Tendo’s dinner table if the visitors were offended, even if they were
gaijin. “
Hai, baka!” he commanded. With some reluctance, the trainee glanced at Seras, then to the
Gunsou and back. At last he replied “
Ossu, Gunsou-sama!” and took a somewhat clumsy attack position, before charging her. She barely moved as he approached, before sliding to one side with a single arm extended, clothes-lining the man and sending him sprawling to her side. A collective shock appeared over the recruits, not to mention the
Gunsou. She then took up a defensive position and smirked, waving a hand “Tell him to send all of them.”
Pip started to object again but knowing she was not to be swayed, did as she asked. The
Gunsou clenched his jaw in consternation but could not have his teaching dishonored so. At last, he gave the command of “
Mina, batsu!
With only a moment’s pause the recruits issued a collective roar of “
Hai,” and charged forward. Even if she had laid out Tanaka-san, she was just a woman, and a
gaijin at that. Besides, if they didn’t obey, far worse humiliations awaited. The scene quickly turned into an all-out brawl as the group mobbed around Seras, and bodies began going this way and that. After a few minutes they were all on the ground, and she was left rubbing one side of her abdomen, saying “I think one of them got a hit in.”
The
Gunsou was speechless at the spectacle of every single one of the fifteen men on the ground, either groaning in pain or knocked out. Pip reached a hand back and brushed it through his hair as this was a rather awkward position to be in. After a few moments silence, Seras spoke up “Ask the Sergeant if he wants to learn how to fight like that and how to teach his men.”
Pip again relayed this. The
Gunsou took his time coming out of shock but after a brief moment nodded with certainty and a firm “
Hai!”
The pair spent the rest of the better part of the day demonstrating some of the finer points of boxing,
savate, and rather strangely,
kapu kuialua, and
kateda too. For his part, the
Gunsou was able to impart a few
jujutsu and
karate lessons back. As they said their goodbyes for the day and returned to their quarters on the base, Pip found occasion to mutter “Zhow off.”
Seras shrugged and stated “They wanted ‘input’ – if you’re so concerned maybe you should show them a thing or two on the shooting range.”
“Maybe I will,” he countered. Meanwhile, that night in the barracks, there was endless talk of the strange
gaijin and the “
Oni-chan” that had wiped out a whole section. Many claimed it was nothing but a myth, but the ones from Section 109 were strangely quiet about it. They were noted to be practicing strange new defensive positions and strikes that night, though…
