No. The Old queen either dies and is replaced or give birth to a new queen that leaves the hive. Not the other way around, never the other way around. A bee queen NEVER leaves it's hive - it physically usually can't. It will ONLY leave if the hive was destroyed, but I think that even in that case the queen stays put in the same place and just restarts.
A swarm does not indicate the creatures thinks for each other. They all move thoughts in some sort of physical way which proves the fact that there is no inside intelligence working.
The only way for it is psi energies moving from creature to creature, or an animal based on grass that they are already connected together so they can pass thoughts without any sort of communication. Grass as we know, don't think.
OK, im having a rethink about the 'Communal Intelligence'. I was NOT taking it as psi powers, but social behavior that was more about sharing information than sharing food etc. Like the bees dancing that erez mentioned. It would be similar to 'communal behaviour', but enough of a difference to warrant a seperate gene thing.
Hmmm bee dancing should be either brain power or a whole gene by itself, just like talking is, or showing lights.
I your case daft your old human-in-genes would lack talking, dancing, art altogether... Because it had no Communal intelligence.
and daft - bee dancing is ALL about sharing food in complex ways - so your thinking it all wrong...
Communal intelligence comes out of the mix of Communal behaviors and the intelligence of every single creature in the community --or-- a mix of Communal behavior and a knowledge from birth (a gene) for sharing intelligence.
Since voice communication require a special gene, even two (producing and hearing) - so should bee dancing and ANY other form of communication.
This has been edited about 3 times or 4 I hope you read the newest vers.

OK, I take the point about this communal intelligence. @TerrisH, are you OK if i shift this to extra 'communal behaviour'?

@squid1111, you mean sticky seeds? Also, you know you can edit your post if you want to change it, instead of posting another message to continue the same sentence . Also it would help if you posted your evolution in the same way as the other people in this thread!

Psi Powers? what Psi powers! Ingnore Charles and Erez's takes on it. they are only confusing the issue.
C and E, your both right. old queens stay in the hive till death, but some species of bees, if the hive grow suffecently large enough, spawn a new queen and slpit the hive in half, sending half the population of the hive along with the new quen to set up a new hive. the old queen stays, of course.
It's Like comparing apples and orenges. simmilar in some respects, diffrent in others. C.B covers Simple comunal Activity, Like shareing a home, talking, ect... C.I. would cover complex comunal interactions, that make it seem like the swarm/hive has an intelegence. meh.
I can see a diffrence, but I can also see how it wouldn't fit. I'll drop it for now, though I disagree.
Travtudian: c&civ3
Evolved from: Swimtudian
Genes (28): Crawling x2, Plant Eating x2, Flesh Eating x2, Complex Stomach x2, Claws x4, Cold Resistance x1, Communal Behaviour x2, Brain Power x2, Eyes x2, Skeleton x1, Tough Skin x1, Large Size x1, Fat Reserves x1, Swimming x2, Gills x2, Vibration Sense x1
Description: Travtudian evolve from the Swimtudian there it's grown their claws to become larger and more deathly to their prey and made the over large predator think twice before try to attack them. It grow the ability to hear prey or rivals who are nearby which allow them to chase them away or kill them and have them for dinner. The also grow a set on gills on the neck which allow them speed up their body metabolism and allow them move faster when swimming after prey and slow it back down to normal when eating or chillin out. Their other changes is that tail grow a little larger and the legs grow little shorter. There body shape has grown a little more streamlined.
Becomes:
Packtudian : c&civ3
Evolved from: Travtudian
Gene added (3): Pack hunting +1, Communal Behaviour +1, Swimming +1
Gene removed (optional): Crawling -2, Large Size -1
Description: Packtudian evolve to take advantage of the fact there are no small pack hunting animals in the oceans. In doing this they become the first descendant of the ancient dibbler to fully lose there legs! All that left of the legs are six small fins where the legs once where, by losing their legs it allow them to be able to swim faster by streamlined their body's. They became more social and develop pack behaviour in hunting their prey. They found that the large size of the Travtudian was not needed and Packtudian lost it. There claws have changed there shape bit the top part of there claws grew longer and more pointed to allow them to spear prey on the claws.
Glaciavalion: Grombar
Genes (36): Complex Stomach x2, Flesh Eating x4, Swimming x1, Vibration Sense x2, Eyes x2, Brain Power x2, Skeleton x2, Cartilage x1, Jaws x2, Fangs x1, Communal Behaviour x3, Water Retention x3, Lungs x1, Walking x4, Climbing x1, Parenting Instinct x2, Large Eggs x1, Strength x2, Fur x1
Description: The weather was turning colder, food though more available this era than the one before was still hard to catch and competition between rival carnivores was as tough as ever. The Glaciavalion started to grow a fur type covering to help keep water off its skin and keep it warm even in colder winds, it was becoming smarter - more able to out think its prey or other hunters and keep its pack members alive and finally it became even tougher than the previous generations Travalion.
Primus Lupivus
Genes Added (Max 3+1 Bonus): Live Birth x1. Fur x1, Eyes x1, Vibration Sense x1
Genes Removed (Max 3): Large Eggs x1
Description: With the development of live birth the Primus Lupivus started out life with more fully formed senses. Over time this lead to the adult Primus Lupivus having greater eyesight and hearing. Along with the further development of fur to help keep the cold and wet off their skin the Primus Lupivus continued to do very well as an apex predator.
Rootworm: RFHolloway
Evolved from: Uglyworm
Genes (14): Digging x2, Water Retention x 2, Crawling x 1, Eating Dead Things x2, Mass Reproduction x1, Jaws x2, Communal Behaviour x2, Plant Eating x1, Complex Stomach x1
Description: The Rootworm was an offshoot from the ugly worm. Like the Uglyworm it was quite vulnerable above ground, and so spent more and more time underground. It started eating the roots of plants, particularly the zeebo family for which it rapidly developed some resistance to thier toxins. The Rootworms also grouped together to avoid heat loss and shared the same burrows. The combined impact of multiple Rootworms chomping roots would occasionally kill plants to provide more of the worms usual food source.
Name hiveworm
evolved from rootworm
genes added
smell x1, scent production x1 communal behaviour x1
Under pressure from both predators and competition for thier food sources the hiveworms lived even closer together, building complex burrows. The develpment of scent was key to this as it enabled the hiveworms to recognise other hiveworms from their community, and target anything else that was not.
Double Stomach Legger: erez87
Evolved from: Pre Legger
Genes (20) : Skeleton x1, Jaws x1, Plant Eating x3, Swimming x2, Eyes x1, Water Retention x2, Lungs x3, Walking x3, Eating Dead Things x1, Insect Eating x1, Complex Stomach x2
Description: The lands were nearly empty. Once close to extinction thanks to the Pro-Legger the Pre-legger survived the cataclysm. The Pro didn't. The vastly open dark plains were open for new opportunity. As soon as the last of the great predators was gone the Pre-Leggers already had a new adaptation. Called the Double-Stomach, this leggers evolved more complex stomachs. This stomachs could bite upon poison and acids from plants but also allowed the Leggers to taste flesh for the first time. Not being predators in any kind of way their only ways to gain this new proteins were by eating the numerous insects all around them and by feeding on dead bodies. All this new capabilities took away from the Leggers ability to digest plants most likely as their stomachs, while becoming more complex - also changed to handle this meat and proteins.
New genes: Jaws, Eating dead things, Insect eating
In bold all that I changed
All-eater Legger: erez87
Evolved from: Double Stomach Legger
Genes (23) : Skeleton x1, Jaws x2, Plant Eating x3, Swimming x2, Eyes x1, Water Retention x2, Lungs x3, Walking x3, Eating Dead Things x2, Insect Eating x2, Complex Stomach x2
Description: As the stomach of the double stomach continued to evolve it's ability to feed on insects and dead meat grew. This animal could now exist in any place insects, dead meat or plants existed as long as it wasn't too cold. Together with this growth the Legger also evolved a superior set of jaws. With straight grazing teeth in the back of the mouth and sharp bone breaking teeth in the front. With this set of teeth they could devour any food they could digest. At the same time their two front teeth begun to grow large, sharp and outward creating a small defensive mechanism that together with their fast running was hopefully a good enough defense for another few million years...
Just one comment on the update - it would be good if you could bold all the positive letters in the commentary (W - widespread, U unchallenged etc.) and Italic all the warning letters (S,I,E etc) or even just make the negative letters lower case - so its slightly easier to pick out who is doing well or poorly fom the multitude of species.
Chungus : Lord_Iggy
Evolved from: Urchin
Genes (10): Photosynthesis x2, Water Retention x2, Acid x2, Piercing Spikes x1, Crawling Roots x1, Mass Reproduction x1, Scavenging Roots x1
Description (optional): As the continents broke up, a species of Urchin in Caliburn began to specialize in decomposition. These plants slowly crawl onto dead organic matter, their saprophytic roots and powerful acid (also useful for deterring predation) quickly break down and harvest the matter. While it feeds, the Chungus periodically releases vast clouds of miniscule spores, to propagate its species. Once the food source runs out, the Chungus will crawl off, to find new food. Even if it doesn't survive said journey, it will have released millions of spores, some of which will land in suitable areas. Chungi play a critical role in their ecosystems. They are responsible for the quick transformation of dead matter into fertile soil, greatly enhancing the productivity of any forest they are present in.

Symbicus: Lord_Iggy
Evolved from: Chungus
Genes added: Symbiotic Tendrils, Airborne Spores, Photosynthesis, Cold Resistance
Genes removed: None
Description: Originating in the distant continent of Falciria, this descendant of the Chungus developed a truly unique form of symbiosis with larger land animals. While they acted like simple Chungi when they grew on non-mobile organic matter, things were dramatically different if they landed on an animal. Small, stringlike roots would anchor the plant in place, and the photosynthetic portion of the Symbicus would spread over the creature's back. However, the Symbicus was not exclusively parasitic. While it gained nutrients from its host, it returned excess sugars to the animal. The Symbicus gains protection from predation and access to some nutrients provided by the animal, while the host gains camouflage, acidic and spike-based defenses, and a valuable source of energy, to help sustain it through difficult times. Throughout their time together, the two lifeforms become more and more intertwined. By the time that the animal dies, the Symbicus is perfectly situated to quickly begin decomposing its host. From this rich source of nutrients which it has invested in, the Symbicus has the resources to release great clouds of airborne spores, spreading as far as the great winds will carry them, to spawn a new generation...
@Daft- Essentially, I figure that symbiotic tendrils slowly spread through the body, performing a few biological tricks in avoiding triggering an immune response, transporting materials between the two animals. Meanwhile, the anchor roots simploy dig into the creature's back, releasing occasional drops of their acid to destroy nerve endings and avoid triggering a pain response. Would you say that this is acceptable, as a lifeform and new gene?
Subterradid: Tuxedohamm
Evolved from: Terradid MrkII
Genes (23): Crawling x2, Digging x2, Plant Eating x3, Complex Stomach x2, Claws x3, Cold Resistance x1, Exoskeleton x2, Eyes x2, Vibration Sense x1, Water Retention x3, Poison resistance x1, Lungs x1
Description: Those Terradids that were able to survive the onslaught of predators started using their claws to dig tunnels with which to escape into, this also allowed the consumption of the roots of plants it came across. The Subterradids began to sense vibrations through their claws and legs. While above ground it would use it's eyes and a simple detection of ground vibrations to alert itself of approaching predators and scurry back to a nearby tunnel entrance.
Fossadid : tuxedohamm
Evolved from: Subterradid
Gene added (you can add 3, or 4 with bonus): Digging x1, Claws x1, Vibration Sense x1
Gene removed (optional, remove up to 3 or 4 with bonus):
Description: The Fossadid spends more of its time underground and has adapted stronger claws to dig and improved hearing to avoid predators. The larger claws also allowed the Fossadid to fight off competition in the various tunnels found underground with a wall of snapping pinchers.
Fossadid : tuxedohamm
