Although these continents ended up separated from each other, most of the survivors were old species common to all three.
Before the impact,
Pro-Leggers were the most numerous creatures to live on land, even though they never made it to Agonia or the Lemunesian islands. Sharp eyes combined with strong legs and a high metabolism made them a difficult target. Their fossils are very common at the start of this era, but no more are found after the eruption. It seems their fast metabolism couldn't survive the sudden lack of food. And as predators also began to decline in number, their extra speed and senses would not have been so useful. Their cousins the
Pre Leggers and
Ol Scrapers still survived in this part of the world.
In any case, those species were near the bottom of the food chain. For centuries, these continents had been dominated by the descendents of the Land Quintupler (the various Duplers and Arms) and the Scensurytes (the
Mursulanyte,
Falcirix,
Arix,
Sensorix and so on). Many of these creatures would have fought desperately with each other towards the end. Most were armed with killer claws, capable of slicing off limbs and disembowelling their opponents.
The Duplers on land were completely wiped out, with the loss of all 9 living species. In some ways they were victims of their own success. They had grown too big and demanding to be able to survive on such meagre rations. The large plant-eating machines,
Diploduplers and
Plutonoduplers, would have been first to go. In fact, Plutonoduplers may already have been extinct due to being eaten by
Eversorixes. The more complex omnivores probably survived for longer, but ultimately met a similar fate...
This branch of evolution reached a peak with the
Ractuplers and
Quadarms. The noisy Ractuplers were the fastest, most mobile, and in some ways the most sociable too, due to their primitive vocal communication. They ranged across Orania and Falciria. They were among the most intelligent animals, and pack hunting would have sustained them for a while after their favourite fruits and leaves disappeared.
Quadarms were definitely the last survivors of the Terradupler family. They not only survived the immediate aftermath of the impact - and desperate fighting with the last surviving clans of Trilarms and Heftuplers, not to mention packs of Arixes and Falcirixes - but seem to have lingered on for centuries, if not thousands of years afterwards, in the eastern peninsulas of Heftulania. This is surprising, given the lack of suitable plants and prey species around during that time. The use of basic tools by these creatures cannot be ruled out, and indeed, certain anomalous objects have been found alongside their fossils, which is the topic of much debate. They were certainly as intelligent as anything seen so far, and it is possible they found a way to gather sea-creatures and plants to add to their diet. Some even suggest that they learnt a primitive way of fermenting sliced-up Zeeboos to make a more digestible meal. But all this speculation is mute. All that is known for sure is that the surviving Quadarm population had a slow decline, probably dying out in the end due to defects and illness caused by in-breeding, just as conditions had recovered enough to meet their minimum needs for long-term survival.
Meanwhile, the Scensurytae were reduced from 11 to 2 living species. The oldest of these, the ancient
Clepsuryte, was already on the way out. The
Mursulanytes had been among the most numerous, with surprisingly huge populations for a creature this size. But after their forest and jungle homes shrivelled and died, they had nowhere to go. Even as fairly simple and undemanding creatures, they were too slow and ponderous to find enough food, or to avoid attacks by gangs of desperate meat-eaters.
The
Eversorix was largest and the last of its kind to appear before the impact. It made up for its lack of social skills by being bigger and stronger than other predators. It was only rivalled by the equally-big
Karakavalion, but if these two ever met, the Eversorix's huge claws and strength would have outmatched the Karakavalion's bite. Other large animals like the Diploduplers, Mursulanytes and the Plutonoduplers would have been fairly easy prey, until the disaster struck and they disappeared. Then it seems the Eversorix went into decline along with their favourite food.
The
Falcirix and
Arix would have seemed like the main candidates to survive. They were the probably hardiest animals on land, as well as relatively brainy, and well-armed. Giving birth to live young helped them to stay on the move in the search for food. They could also gain slight nourishment from scavenging and from plants, but not quite enough to sustain themselves... They needed meat. Unfortunately, they were not able to dig or run fast enough to catch enough of the surviving smaller creatures. The last populations of Falcirix and Arix would have been locked in desperate bloody battles with the other large creatures, until they either fought to the death or died of starvation...
The
Saaranix, a fairly primitive species by comparison, turned out to have the right combination of hardiness, general abilities and low-maintenance to be able to survive. Scavenging allowed a handful to survive for months after the eruption, until they were able to scrape a living from the few plants and small animals that they ran into. Their legs were adequate for getting around, and their thicker exoskeleton provided some protection from the elements. Even so, this species remained on the threshold of extinction, right to the end of this era.
The only other survivor was the
Flevryte, which made it out of the dying jungles to take up life in canyons and rocky cliffs, spending their time eating Proto-mosses and lichens and any dead things that they came across. It seems that their vocal communication was quite useful in warning of danger and telling others about sources of food etc. They survived at the expense of the hallucinogenic
Fluterytes.
A couple of other local survivors were the
Diggadids and
Chrontrevalions. The hardy Diggadids had survived in their deep burrows, eating Tranel bulbs and the roots of Zeeboos.
Chrontrevalions were one of the most complex species to survive, and the only survivors of the family of species descended from the Xiavalion and Sandavalion. Most of these were unable to adapt after the loss of both habitat and prey. Chrontrevalions survived partly by luck, partly because they were better suited to life on the plains, while still being able to climb rock faces to catch Flevrtes, or swim in rivers to find small creatures in the sediment. They were also attentive parents, though they still laid eggs. The more sophisticated
Gaeavalion had been evolving just before the disaster, and these did give birth to live young, but were too small in number and a little too demanding to be able to survive.
The
Lectavalion species were the last of the true tree-climbing predators. They are also contenders for the braniest animals up to this point. Their brain seems to have been as large as anything yet seen, and the lobes dedicated to spatial awareness were especially well developed. But as with other brainy creatures, this intelligence didn't help much when there simply wasn't enough food to be had.
At the end of this era, most of Heftulania and Falciria remained pleasantly warm, though quite barren and infertile. The north of Orania was one of the most fertile regions left, but was now far too cold for most species to survive.
