Evolution and early history of the Velocofish
-It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. - Charles Darwin
Starting around the second epoch mutations began to rapidly break out in the east sea. With other, more advanced creatures quickly taking dominance of the seas, their ancestors were also forced to evolve or die out. Within a few million years after the evolution of predators, most of the prey species were declining in massive numbers.
Among those species were the fastblobs, a species that was literally food for the waiting. Only the fastest could escape the predators that sought to make a meal out of them. Over the course of the next millenium, they were develop into a more competitive species.
The first major change that happened to them was elongation of the fins and the development of a true tail. These benefited the creatures extremely, allowing them to escape their predators quicker. To go along with these evolutions, they needed a better sense of navigation. Their lateral senses weren't good enough to allow them to sense their environment on the run; so after a couple hundred generations a basic set of eyes were developed. They eyes couldn't recognize anything more than light and dark areas however.
The final evolution happened at the relatively close end of the epoch. With decreasing amounts of food available, they were forced to look in new directions. The natural course had them develop into a carnivorous creature, armed with a flexible jaw of soft-bone and a single set of teeth.
