New civ hint - analysis

I'd love it if the final reveal were Indonesia/Morocco/Sioux/Venice, but the achievements turned out to be completely out of order! Just to mess with our heads all the more.

I can totally see Vietnam being plausible (I just don't buy it).

PS -- I think cybrxkhan's icon isn't; it's an iKhan. :D

To add to Vietnam's case, even though a lot of stuff you'll find online depicts medieval Vietnamese troops and generals as very Chinese-looking, I've also seen a good number of places where they've been depicted as what is more accurately the half-naked look that would be more common in SE Asia. I explicitly recall one example in a Vietnamese children's book discussing the Mongol invasions of Vietnam (speaking of the Khan ) where the Vietnamese soldiers were depicted as wearing nothing but loincloths. For a Vietnamese commander to be running around like that is not inconceivable, the earlier he is.

Though... again... Probably Indonesia. Just playing devil's advocate to fuel more mindless speculation. I don't even buy my own explainations, but someone's gotta stand up for good ol' 'Nam.

It looks more like this to me:

That's the same thing.

Niice. Apple owns the Khan brand now.

That's the same thing.
Ah. I agree then. It looks too similar to the building in the picture to be coincidence, in my opinion.

What else was added?
The new city-states in G&K were: Antwerp, Cahokia, Colombo, Genoa, Hong Kong, Marrakech, Singapore, Tyre, Zanzibar, Zurich, Geneva, Jerusalem, La Venta, Lhasa, Vatican City, Wittenburg, Jakarta, Lisbon, Prague, Manila, Milan, Mombasa,Valetta, and Yerevan.

Oh yeah, Lisbon was a one-expansion wonder too. :D

I'm pretty sure that Tyre, Lhasa, Genoa and probably a couple more on your list were in Vanilla.

Here's the list:

Wow, did they really add that many city-states for GK? I thought it was six or seven. No connection then :(.

To play devil's advocate for Vietnam, here's a pic of a medieval Vietnamese general/king:

Again, it's not a 100% match, but I can see how the headpiece could be the one the guy in the hint is wearing. I could conceivably see it as a Chinese-style headgear to keep the hair together. Add to that the fact that it wouldn't be entirely implausible to have a Vietnamese ruler running around half-naked, particularly earlier ones (the Vietnamese only adopted completely Chinese-style clothes until the early modern era, and even nowadays there's remnants of the old SE Asian style).

As for the building, I don't think it's clear enough to say it's really an Indonesia building. Could just be a stilted house or something at a weird angle, which would be Vietnamese or other SE Asian groups.

Of course, I still think it's Indonesia. But just playing devil's advocate here.

Honestly, I would prefer to have Vietnam instead of Indonesia (BTW, is the correct form Vietnam or Viet Nam?) but I really don't think they would pass the oportunity to have such notable female leaders like the Trung Sisters. Not when they're cooler than the male ones, and in an expansion with so few female leaders.

Indonesia had a decent female leader in the form of Tribuhahwahana (however you spell that).

Anyhow, as for the correct form of Vietnam, it doesn't really matter. I think both are considered acceptable in the Anglosphere. While in Vietnamese the latter is usually the most common, I don't think anyone would care if you used the former (I think I've seen it in Vietnamese too, anyways).

Honestly I don't mind whether it's Indonesia or Vietnam. I'd be happy to have either! As a Filipino, I just want to see more Southeast Asian civs. ASEAN pride and all that.

But Tribunny is not as cool as the Indonesian prime-minister dude, while the Trung sisters are the coolest thing on Vietnamese (the adjective in Portuguese is "vietnamita", so I almost wrote "Vietnamite") history.

To throw more nonsensical speculation, here's a Cham building, which bears some similarity.

A Champa civ is a serious longshot, though. I'd wager the chances of all the other major SE Asian states (Vietnam, Burma, Khmer/Cambodia, even Laos) are more likely. And I still think Indonesia.

But more mindless speculation for entertainment, yours truly.

The Trung sisters would definitely be the most unique out of potential Vietnamese leaders, that's for sure.

With you mate! Fellow ASEAN and all.

I am convinced it is Indonesia though from all the analysis done in this thread which is amazing. I learn something new everyday from here:) Though i wont be surprised if it is another SEA nation, given the tight interlinks of SEA's history and culture. If anything, my lecturer today spoke about the Majapahit so i guess that is a good omen:)

Is it possible that we get Indonesia AND Vietnam? They aren't exclusive to each other alphabetically but Firaxis would have to exclude a Native American civ to do that.

Though to be honest, Vietnam would be more interesting and fit in with the theme of the expansion pack better than most of the NA options they could go for...

Hear, hear! Definitely a good omen. :D

ASEAN all the way!

And the great thing about Majapahit (or related empires) is that it includes cultural links to almost all of Southeast Asia, including the likes of Singapore, Malaysia and others.

Great for representing SE Asia and giving that region a reason to cheer in unison (although I still long for the day when each major empire there gets a deserved leader of its own instead of just one or two but I know that's not happening :p)

That's not impossible, and would be cool for us who want moar SE Asia (though sad that we won't get another native american civ). In fact, I'm starting to question my previous assumption that we would get a native American civ because of the Pueblo thing (though I still think it's likely). However, I'm not sure whether they'll put two SE Asian civs in an expansion (granted Vietnam's an oddball given it's sort of both SE Asian and East Asian culturally, but let's ignore that).

Still, we may be surprised. They've done weirder things.

More Asian is good, even if you're not from SE Asia. Asia's huge, but people always assume a few select, iconic groups like China, Japan, and India are enough to cover it, which is not the case at all.

I would love more SE Asian civs, but I would also love more sub-Saharan African civs and more Native American civs. I want all the things!
