New civ hint - analysis

More Asian is good, even if you're not from SE Asia. Asia's huge, but people always assume a few select, iconic groups like China, Japan, and India are enough to cover it, which is not the case at all.

So true. People seem to forget that the majority of the people on Earth live in East and Southeast Asia.

(ranked by population)

1. China
2. India
4. Indonesia
8. Bangladesh
10. Japan
12. Philippines
13. Vietnam
20. Thailand
25. South Korea
26. Myanmar

They aren't just making babies for the fun of it: there is a whole lot going on behind the scenes which is why I am always puzzled when people on random occasions around these forums question adding more Asian civs (I won't name names...)

Indeed. Of course, Asian civs (ignoring the Middle East) aren't underrepresented as badly as American or African civs, but there are still a number of unfortunate holes - heck, I'm still waiting until the day when Central Asia, with all its vibrant history, will be represented with more than Mongolia, which is hardly adequate, if adequate at all to begin with.

Not unless they improve the brain-destroying Asia regional soundtrack, it isn't. :D

I don't mind it. But it could use more variety. Sick of hearing Thai music, I really don't like hearing it all the time. And what's up with Indian music when I'm playing Japan? :p

Actually, that's a good question. Why is India always lumped with China and Japan and Mongolia? It's like lumping Turkey and the Celts together.

It is true that Southeast Asia has actually been pretty sparsely populated until fairly recently. Something about the combination of tropical climes and islands not lending itself well to large populations, or at least that's what I remember reading in my "Government and Politics of Southeast Asian Countries" course. I also recall reading that the population of the Philippines was about 7 million at the turn of the 20th century and 17 million at the time of the Japanese invasion. It is almost 100 million today.

So it's only been in the 20th century, post-WWII, that Southeast Asian countries really started to get busy, so to speak. Although of course South Asia and East Asia have had large populations for just about forever.

They did not choose the best songs for Siam and India. There are so many better options that are both more pleasing to the ears and more culturally appropriate

It's possible that after BNW developers will release some more civ DLC. They were very busy after making G&K, but now they'll have some resources to earn some additional money.

Yeah, that's true. The Chinese stuff was okay, but I thought the Japanese music was kind of bleh. Personally I thought the Middle Eastern/African music set was okay and the American one as well.

I wished they would add new music along the expansions. Would've been nice to hear stuff from other cultures.

Music for me is the backbone to a good video game. Certainly not a major complaint of mine because they have some fantastic stuff overall but, like I said, civs like Siam and India could use a little fine-tuning

Don't count on it, there is already a huge amount of civs available. Perhaps the best thing we can do is thoroughly play BNW and come up with a whole bunch of suggestions that could fill another expansion =)

Sometimes I play an American or Middle Eastern civ just because I like they're music more. I think one time I decided against playing a game as Japan or something because I was just sick and tired of hearing Indian and Thai music over and over again when it wouldn't have made sense.

Anyhow, to keep things on topic, here's a couple of Khmer buildings that could be reasonable matches:

Here's also some Vietnamese stilt houses, which could be a decent match from a certain angle:

But I still say... Indonesia.

But more fuel for speculation anyways.

Those temple-like building photos combined with my Khmer leader photos doesn't make them seem so ridiculous (Stilt houses though I don't believe really say anything. Even if they did, they have those everywhere in SE Asia)

I doubt there will be an expansion after BNW. Can't express it directly, but it looks much more finished than G&K. And game lifecycle is near the end, so devs are probably started thinking about Civ 6.

I understand what there are a lot of civs already, but we still have some more room and tons of fan requests. So IMHO we have chances for new civ DLC.

True on the stilt houses.

I'm actually starting to convince myself that maybe the return of the Khmer are possible.

But......... I'm still betting on Indonesia. :p

(Though... then again... the other SE Asian options are all plausible... Heck, I could even see the Philippines.)

Did the Philippines have an empire at some point?

Not really, but they did have a number of kingdoms, thassalocracies (though nothing like the Indonesia thasalocracies in term of size), sultanates, etc.

But that might be good enough for a Civ game, especially considering the Polynesia/Celt/Native Americna blobs.

New European civ could still be Ukraine. If they're the unique resource civ, it could be misery or feral children.

Strange that not prostitutes. Sex-tourism is another way to cultural victory. :D

I do not see Ukraine in Civilization for at least 200-300 next years. Do not know what civ expect as the last European in BNW since I don't like the idea of Venice civilization. Hoped for Hungary, but it seems to be out. Maybe Swiss somehow?

Great to see so many supporters for Hungary :king:
Hopefully it will be included later in some form

Btw, I think Swirzerland is also out.
IIRC some Swiss city states were already shown in BNW
