New civ linked to new resource

Just for fun, I'll make a signature bet with anyone. If it's bison/Buffalo, raffia, or seals, I pick your signature for, lets say 4 months after the reveal. If it's glass, snails, tyrian purple, batik, olive oil, Kangaroos, Maple Syrup, tacos, or something else of your choosing, you can pick mine for the same amount of time. If it's none of those, nothing happens. Anyone down?

Can you imagine the Inuit Civilziation Screen? Heavy snow falling down while the leader greets you in his hooded fur coat and his wolves howling.

Olive oil?

Something to give a bit of hope to Team Italy...

That might be a good one.

What was the exact quote about the resource anyways? People h ere and in other threads are making wild assumptions about the type of civ and or resource based on the quote.

I agree with those who say this will NOT be a natural resource but some sort of manufactured resource a particular civilization is famous for.

(murano) glass and Venice come to mind.

Part of me really doesn't want them in, but the other part thinks they could be one of the greatest civs of all in terms of unique flavor.

Glass for Egypt? Alexandria was famous for its glass in ancient times so this would be quite appropriate.

Rosewood for the Zulus? Obviously this is now a revealed civilization so I'm not suggesting this is the one the OP was referring to but it would also be quite good. Also Rosewood is a rather vague term applying to a large variety of timbers from all over the world so this is perhaps a bit general. But I'm pretty confident several prized tree species come from area of Southern Africa, it could work.

My impression is that people weren't upset with Sitting Bull but rather "Sitting Bull of the Native American Empire."

I agree Sammy. People were upset about the civ being the "Native Americans" instead of the Sioux specifically. People were not unhappy with the Sioux and Sitting Bull in Civ 2.

I think the scrapping of Popey (and likely the Pueblo) increases the chance of seeing Sitting Bull return. Firaxis was attempting to make a very interesting change, but it will be easy to fall back on the Sioux, and older fan favorite.

EDIT:

You are reading my mind today. The Inuit civ colonizing spots along the northern or southern borders of maps would be a new interesting mechanic.

Buffalos for Sioux
Seals or walruses for Eskimos
Wolves for Inuit
Marsupials for Aborigines
Papyrus for Egypt
Rice and tea for China. Idk

If it was then it would be the Civs UA. That is, instead of anything else, they'd produce this resource like what some city states do. If that were the case it would shatter the dreams of all those people who have spent sleepless nights coming up with UAs for an Italian civilization that won't in the expansion.

Perhaps even some Viking helmets as trophies in the background? Would be really cool - Snow is always beautiful

Just had a crazy thought - how about Papacy (or Israel) and holy relics? :P

Well you never know, but one thing is for sure it won't be Israel (we have seen Jerusalem in a screenshot now)

I thought it was a given that this is how this new resource would actually work.

Did Shirk say the single new resource in BnW, if he stated it, would give away a "new" civ specifically?

After seeing the changes to France, I could maybe see the Polders giving the Dutch actual tulips now. I'm just not sure how he worded it though. Anyone know around when in the video this is talked about?

They said its connected to new Civ. I although think tulips for Netherlands would be a good idea. Their UA is rather weak at the moment.

I think misunderstandings about the Polder may have given rise to the mechanic for this new civ. There was a ton of joy when people thought they could produce a unique luxury, being able to do that with a new civ could be really cool indeed. I still think that Mercantile Citystates should give you their special products so you can either have the happiness or sell it or trade it for strategic resources, but that's just me.

Did Shirk state the the new single resource in BnW, if he stated it, would give away a "new" civ specifically?

I'm wondering whether he meant:

  • It was so obvious that immediately everyone would associate it with a certain group, such as, say, maple syrup and Canada, or vodka and Russia (if Russia was being added as a civ)
  • Or, is it not obvious at first, but it can quickly be deduced to a few possible civs, so it still gives away the civilization.

A Civ specific resource? what could it be?

Rubber : Kongo, Belgium
Clove, Pepper, Nutmeg : Indonesia/Majapahit/Srivijaya
Tobacco : Northern American Civs

I thought it was a given that this is how this new resource would actually work.

It's not a given. All that was said was if the new resource is revealed, it would most likely reveal a new civ. Nothing was stated as to the nature of this new resource. For all we know, it is a generally available item that just happens to be strongly associated with a particular people. Dennis, in order to avoid a possible leak of information that they weren't ready to divulge, may have simply erred on the side of caution.
