New civ linked to new resource

My first thought was bison, but I'm now wondering how that would practically work. They would presumably occur on plains tiles, so multiple civs could see them and use them (if not improve them). That's the first problem - unlike horses and cows the bison are really associated not only with a type of terrain but with a specific area of one continent.

Second problem: Would the Sioux (or other NA) civ be the only one that could improve a bison tile? If so, then we're clogging up tiles for other civs with resources that can't be fully utilized. That doesn't make a great deal of gameplay sense. But if everyone could improve a bison tile, then how does one differentiate the Sioux as a civ?

The only way to avoid the "clogging" problem is if this type of resource occurred on tiles that no one would ordinarily seek out......

Glass is pretty much a resource, just like jewellery and porcelain.
We also don't know what Dennis meant by a special civ related resource, it really could be anything from kangaroos to Swiss watches.

My money is still on Belgium, with chocolate softening the tyrannical colonising parts of their involvement in the Africa scenario.

Another possibility could be... would the Inuit get rolled into Canada at all to cover another big fan favourite?

The difference is that jewellery and porcelain are city state specific. Another like them would have to be, for a civ at least, a special ability. Who knows, maybe it is. We'll have to see. I still think it sounded like a silly thing they've added that very obvious, but not a huge impact on the game.

Btw seals are not in any way unique to Inuits or the area they are living. If they would add seals they should be a resource for all, not just for the Inuits. At least Russians, Finns, Swedes and Norwegians have long history with seals and hunting them.

Just coming from a Finnish person. There is even seal species unique only to Finland and its one of most endangered seals in the world.

And thus, Inuit's seals still sound fairly possible...

Anyway, I'll place my bets on that:

A. It isn't a Civ-specific resource, so it can be worked by other civs.
B. The Civ that it would hint could be the Inuit.

Polar bears might make more sense than seals... unique to Inuits and more viable as a luxury resource. The Inuit were making a pretty big deal recently over an international attempt to force them to stop exporting polar bear bits.

They'd be a good one for the World Congress although I suspect they are too controversial to include full-stop.

Agreed. But the inclusion of seals would definitely suggest Inuit, given that Russia and sweden are in the game

Oh of course and that's partially why it would make sense. Seals are a resource that anyone can use and would help make Tundra/Snow/Ice more useable terrains (albeit under certain conditions still). But considering in the US where Inuits and Aleuts have been thrown in concentration camps over seals, wars between Inuits and others have been fought over them, and their value - it wouldn't be a surprise at all.

Plus Seals are commonly suggested for the Inuit - but the fact that it could be an all around new resource seems like a general (+)

Sounds extremely reasonable! I say this is a excellent alternative to all the UB/UA resources I've been speculating about!

I sorta hope this isn't the case however.

UA - Jamaica gets double happiness from Cannabis and may trade this luxury without losing the benifit.

You may have hit something there!

Notice the vote trading here, specifically for banning the use of whales. Maybe the same could apply for something like seals. It would be an interesting mechanic and would make sense in the context. Would it really scream only Inuits though?

An interesting idea though.

Walrus might also be new arctic luxury?

On a general note I really would like to see more resources. It would just add more flavor to the game. I dont understand why they are not making this. Adding new food resources would not break anything. Just make wheat less common resource and add rice for example.

Why not Reindeer for the Sami and/or Santa Claus?

Or Mustangs for the Comanche?

What if iit is a new resource avaiable to all civs but the civ gets a unique UI that provides additional bonuses for the civ?

I whole-heartedly agree. For those players who like to roleplay with their fictional empire, more resources are always welcome. I like to imagine how the resources available to my empire effect the people (furs, copper, and crab? My people live under their copper tiled roofs, wearing furs, and eating crab!).

I wouldn't imagine rebalancing and tweaking for the addition of new resources would be all that difficult.

Some of the resources mentioned here are site-specific...I am banking on Rubber, and...Indonesia? Something that the whole world needs, not just a luxury...

*Cough* Inuits *Cough*

I was probably wrong with my Pueblo prediction (I made it before Pax though, was one of like 2 people on that) - But my head is telling me we will see the Inuit this time around as a hasty replacement for the Pueblo
