New civ linked to new resource

I think Assyria are a ancient civ fan favorite - there are a few hard core fans who want Hittities, Sumeria, Phonecia etc. Assyria was the bone thrown to that vocal sector of the fanbase.

You can put Assyria as a fan favourite in the sense that it's an ancient civ (and many people want those) and it was chosen because it was the only "big name" ancient civ that has never been in civ. There are some vocal supporters of assyria. I wouldn't particularly code them as Fan Favourites by themselves though. They could also be a "new element" civ due to their UB who should be the only civ in the game using these as early in the game.

I wouldn't read too much into those interview quotes though...

So wait, you're now saying that it wasn't that they were a fan favourite, rather, some people wanted an ancient civ so "that'll do". That isn't a popular civ from anything I've seen, even if they don't use the new mechanics.

The main argument against Cuba is that it's only really notable in its relation with larger powers (USA and USSR). But then again we already have the Iroquois and I've been campaigning for Vietnam so it's not a very strong argument.

Other argument: As Fidel is still alive, he probably would not be the leader, and the office was busy or for some pre-revolution leader bland and tasteless with the theme of the expansion, or the historically incorrect Che Guevara. Guevara would probably be a good choice, even though he never properly been leader of Cuba, for marketing reasons. His figure is very well known, and would generate huge publicity for the game (good or bad), so they take advantage and reveal it early on, to his image be in all reports about the game, as well as Pacal was to Gods & Kings. As it has not been announced, it is quite likely that it appears ...

We've heard that a third of the new civs are fan favourites and the other 2/3s show off new systems.

So far, we have:

Poland - Doesn't particularly show new systems and has always been popular with the fans: this is a fan favourite

Assyria - Again doesn't particularly show off any new gameplay elements and has proven quite popular in polls etc: this is a fan favourite

Brazil - Tourism civ: showing off new systems (regardless of its reputation with the fans)

Portugal - Trading civ: showing off new systems

Zulu - doesn't show off new systems: fan favourite

I think we already have the 3 civs that firaxis are throwing too us (if we are to take them literally as having given a third of the civs to the fans wants) so that likely means no inuit unless they are incorporated into some of the new systems that are introduced, which i can't particularly see happening

I think this is plausible, although Assyria is mostly just because they were damn important rather than a fan favorite (I'm certainly a fan, mind you, but many people more or less dismissed them because Babylon was there and they wanted geographic diversity).

Assyria also has a UB tied a new feature.

Buffalo, linked to Comanche

Agreed. I don't see any way a resource that appears on the map could be associated with a single civilization.

Seals on snow - Inuit...

Oh my! What country could possibly match up with that? How about Guatemala? Nicaragua? El Salvador? Panama? Colombia? Bolivia? Argentina? Peru? Chile? Paraguay? Mexico?

Weeh, Bolivia's been mentioned! (albeit, as a negative example, but still: Weee!)

Especially the Comanche (as opposed to the Sioux).

There could be several "Plains" civs that Buffalo could be implemented with [Of the ones discussed frequently, the Apache, Sioux, and Comanche could all theoretically use them]

Corn is a solid idea. Are we sure we're looking for a luxury resource? If not corn is a solid idea. Maybe tie in ethanol too later in the game. For everyone, like with a generic building.

Could be used to tie in any number of native americans from central Mexico to the great lakes and the eastern seaboard of the states.

The thing in favor of Comanche is that they have some links to the scenario we know about whilst the Apache & Sioux would really need to be reskinned as another tribe to fit.

I still think Bison is the most likely new resource.

I'm more inclined to believe that Bisons would be in the same category as coffee.

I dont think it's a case of that will do - I think that there are a small core of civs from the ancient middle east and med that have strong support (Assyria being one of them) and that the devs looked at their mechanics and decided Assyria best fir what they were trying to add to the game. One of those ancient civs was probably always going to get in to give that part of the fanbase one of their favorites. In that way I DO see it as a fan favorite.

Again, not really. The scenario will only focus on the Eastern Theater

Yeah... that's not a fan favourite addition, and as pointed out, they do use new additions to the game. I'd be extremely surprised if they, one of the least popular of the lot when it comes to the ancient near east, was chosen as a "fan favourite" and it seem rather silly to list them as one.
