Researching Currency. Popped a settler and another worker. Germans are north of me. Should I whip the granary in Bula? A couple of barbs nearby.

Why did you not finish the Monument in Bula

I would tech Masonry (1t)>Maths>Currency>Construction and go kick some Mongol butt.

Start to think about the timings of things. Like a Settler popping and having a road in place. You have 2 workers building a cottage in Umga that will not be worked for a long time.

Ulundi should have taken back copper. Also, try to avoid going into unhappiness unless you plan to use them. Not sure if that was the case. You can 2 pop that worker into a settler settler though. But keep those scientists running.

I would have send one of the warriors in Nob up NE and pushed the other warrior further north in the peninsula making the area virtually barb free.

Yikes! I whipped it and assumed it was completed. I didn't wait til the end of the turn when I switched to granary. Dumb mistake.

I reloaded and tried again.

Right now you can trade Myst for Fishing with KK. This is a good trade. You could get IW for Alpha now, but that is not necessary. You have a Monopoly on Alpha and no urgent need for IW. Once you give this guys Alpha it will boost them a bit, so you want to put that off as long as you can - on this difficulty level.

Now that you have Alpha you should check trade screen every turn.

Once you get Currency you look for opportunities to get chunks of gold or gold per turn (GPT)

note my other mad musings above

well, you still seem deadset on not give Ulundi back the copper.

You want Umga working as many cottages as possible and the gold.

Happiness is a bit of a concern early on this map early on. Not a big deal though. HR is another option after Currency or you could just build the Mids.

I've got to call it this evening. It's quite late and sleep is catching up on me.

I've given you some thoughts on what to do. You have a good base here to work with.

You can expand out your land or stick with 5 to 6 core cities and launch and attack on Mongolia..or everyone else for that matter.

Start to think about where you want to go with this game, but for now do the things I've mentioned and settle at least 2 more cities.

If you don't have any urgent builds, you can always build "Reseach" and get to Currency or HR very fast.

Tech trading is important, but do so judiciously on this level. Backfill some old techs. You can even sell some of your old techs after currency, but don't give too much and certainly not the wrong thing to the wrong AI.

Avoid trading techs you have a monopoly on, especially on lower levels unless you absolutely have to have the target tech.

You can always post pics of a trade you plan to do so I can review it.

Sorry. I keep forgetting some details. Meant to switch to copper.

when that happens it tells me that you are not reviewing your cities each turn. You can play the game any way you like, but if you want to learn and do better it is important to micro the early game.

Thanks for your help.

I moved on a few turns. Bismarck and Pascal demanded a couple of minor techs. Settling another city to the south following the one to the north in the peninsula. I'll have monuments, granaries, and libraries in all my cities. After researching construction, I'll attack KK.

Very nice and solid game so far, Joe :goodjob: Well done, Lymond
Spoiler :
I can sell at least six nice city sites still, don't see any reason for a quick cat rush, but now the empire is probably in the state where it can handle building settlers and military simultaneously. So yes, go for KK but don't forget rexing while you're at it.

Only problem I see here, Joe, is you did something I don't quite understand in Ulundi. You should not have stopped running scientists in Ulundi.

Building research in Bula and Nob will probably do you much more good than building Libraries right now.

Also, grass hill mines > plains hills mines. Always build grass hill mines first

In Nongama? A workboat. What is a border pop going to do for you in that city? (Oh, the corn. Still, definitely a workboat. Immediate gratification trumps delayed gratification when it comes to city management).

I'm ready to progress on this game. I completed a few more turns. Do I get aggressive and build up my military to attack KK, or continue to settle and tech?

It seems like this shadow game has come to an end.

Anyway, I've played a couple more games on Noble and I was wondering: how do you win games early? When I win it's usually in the latter part of the 20th century. Is there a way to win sooner or do all games play out this way?

It seems Lymond has taken a temporary leave. Do you want one of us to sub for him until he's back?

Sure.

I won't be able to actually continue until I finish work today (after 7pm) but I think if I'm going to move up in difficulty I'm going to need to learn better strategy and tactics.

Like I said, I'm winning games on Noble more consistently, but it's usually a space race or slug-fest until the end of the 1900s.

Lymond will be back for sure. However, UnforcedError can be your boss if you need help today. Good luck Joe, don't give up!
