New PBEM adaptation of TGW-Div 1.6: Playtesting!

I also found this paragraph in the "Help" Section. Are we sure every base was covered?

When renaming a unit, remember that the name of the unit is how the game identifies the necessary graphics and control files required to display the unit in the game. If you rename a unit in the editor YOU MUST rename that unit's directory (\ART\UNITS\UNITNAME\) as well as the INI file that controls the animations files (\ART\UNITS\UNITNAME\UNITNAME.ini).

Oh yeah Cyc, I did read it also. See, if we had any problems of that kind the game would crash right away, we won't be able to play until the turn 3 (week 32, 1914). I have already asked Moff to forward me his German game, so that I could fix it and we could resume our exciting war :))

Cool. Sounds good.

Week 33, 1914

Ottoman Empire

No action to report. Troops continue to position themselves.

Austria-Hungary

It's been a while since I played this turn and I didn't write everything down but I know that the Austrians shelled Italian positions just outside Venice and killed 2 Rifle A.

Germany

Much action to report this week.

German submarines attempt to attack Royal Navy Pre-Dreadnoughts near the Norwegian coast and die.

In the Baltic one Russian CA is sunk and 2 DD Flotillas.

In the Jutland area German battleships sink 3 unknown objects. It is not clear what these objects were but they did not offer much resistance doing no damage to our attacking ships. The British CA off of Amsterdam is sunk by a German Pocket Battleship.

Near Nancy German artillery shells the city. Two counterbattery pieces attack Nancy destroying 1 French Light Artillery and damaging another. We lose one counterbattery gun.

Isonzo Front.

3 German Armies launch an offensive to clear the Italian trenches outside Venice. 4 Italian HMG's are destroyed and 6 Italian Rifle A's after a ferocious artillery bombardment by German artillery. In addition two Italian Light Arty pieces are destroyed and a worker is captured. Other prisoners captured during the fighting are carted away from the battle scene to safety. No other fighting to report.

In the Baltic Sea - A Reg Destroyer Flotilla sinks an unknown object (a sub?). All else is quiet on the Western Front. No sign of the Huge German Fleet.

Observation Planes Report -
The Hindenburg Army is still wounded (12/16) and resting in Metz. 5 German units South of Leige. 19 units SE of Leige.
Nancy Artillery shells German troops South of Metz. All 3 fail to hit. 2 of 3 155mm hit for a total of 3 HPs. It appears an agent has been killed just outside of the Paris city limits. No cadaver was available for examination, in fact the only evidence of the occurance was a wounded soldier, who claims the confrontation took place.

The "Agent" was Mata Hari herself! It is not a good idea, generally, to leave an invisible agent on the roads and railroads. Chances are traveling division will accidentally run into and recognize the spy only to execute her or him just like at this real Mata Hari execution picture :ar15:

Britain
Shelling attackers South of Liege, 3-4 hits, missing the rest. The third Corps under the command of general Plumer arrives in Belgium. Liege is likely to fall next turn. Some stupid Belgian Fortress divisions together with Portuguese Expeditionary Force are spotted in France drinking wine instead of fortifying Liege. It is so regrettable that AI fights so poorly! I am almost certain AI has already lost his Belgian Corp under the King Albert, not sure about Romanian Corp and Serbian Corp. I hope Moff will update us on visible AI activity during this week.

British destroyers destroy 5 mining crafts near Heligoland. 1 Survivors generated and rescued by the destroyer, which is sent to London for 1K gold and victory points. High Seas Fleet spotted in Heligoland Bite, protected by the minefields and left "un-engaged".

British Imports produce first War Material in this game!

Italy

Huge Battle in Otranto Straight! Entire Italian Fleet engaged the entire Austrian Fleet. Spectacular Italian victory! Austrians lost all the dreadnought and semi dreadnought battleships, except for Prince Eugene, which managed to sink Italian Cavour class dreadnought Cesare. 2 Survivors were generated and were saved by a destroyer and old battleships.

Cordoba Corps kill lonely German R division on the West bank of Isonzo river. Venice fortified and braces for the worst!

Week 34, 1914

Ottoman Empire

All quiet here...

Austria-Hungary

Austrian forces corner and destroy Rumanian Army led by Iliescu near the Austrian Rumania border!

Austrian Navy spots Italian fleet outside of Antivari and sinks an Italian Predreadnought.

Germany

German artillery shell French trenches outside Nancy. Infantry and Army units follow up with an assault. During the fighting German forces destroy 1xFrench HMG, 2xFrench Rifle A, and 2xFrench Fortress Divisions. German losses are light at 1xRifle A. Despite the significant gains a breakthrough could not be achieved.

North Sea

The Kriegsmarine shells Royal Navy ships doing light damage but not sinking any vessels in the large stack. However, off of Amsterdam, there is some fighting at sea. Two British Predreadnoughts are spotted in a medium sized stack and sunk. German losses are the BC Moltke! A stunning defeat and the German Admiralty has new respect for the Royal Navy.

Off the south coast of Norway German mines attack another medium sized stack of British Predreadnoughts. Here the British lose no ships and Germany loses a mine and a submarine.

In the Baltic a lone Russian DD Flotilla is spotted off the southern tip of Sweden and sunk by a German Coastal submarine. During the brief fighting however the Russian manages to sink a German DD Flotilla.

No other fighting this week.

In the Baltic - SE of Kalmar in the cold waters of the Baltic, one of our subs sank 1 of 2 German Pre-Dreadnoughts and escapes.

Light Artillery in Warsaw bombards a German Div 8 Armee for 2 HPs. Then, a mighty Cossak finished him off and returned to Warsaw a hero. The elimination of the Prussian Cavalry Division by our glorious Cossacks has sparked a Golden Age in Mother Russia. The Cossacks have once again regained their noble status, and charged our people with the energy to move forward in this world war.

Nancy Artillery shells German troops amassed directly across the border, doing 4 HPs worth of damaged to the fully healed Hindenburg Army (15/19). The Hindenburg was the strongman in the massive attack force ready to pounce on Nancy. It is also backed by the still wounded Ludendorff Army(17/19). France is very proud of it's Eastern border defense and the French people in the surrounding area and show this by sending in more troops to fortify the Eastern blockade.

Britain Week 34, 1914

From Wikipedia

When war was declared, the Karlsruhe was in the Caribbean, under Captain Erich Köhler. On 6 August 1914 she rendezvoused with the German liner SS Kronprinz Wilhelm, a passenger ship which was ordered to also convert into a commerce raider. The Karlsruhe transferred guns to the Kronprinz Wilhelm, and received coal in return, though the transfer needed to be cut short when the British cruiser HMS Suffolk arrived. The German ships separated, and the Suffolk chose to chase the Karlsruhe, at one point coming close enough (7000 yards) to open fire, but missed, and the Karlsruhe successfully escaped and fled to Puerto Rico for resupplying, and then to patrol off the coast of Brazil. Between August and November 1914, Karlsruhe sank sixteen merchant ships.

Not in this war! Regular CL Suffolk has spotted veteran Karlsruhe and engaged her imidiately. German ship was carring Survivors from her past activity sinking Neutral transports, I assume. Resulting battle was British victory. The last German armed raider in Atlantic has been sunk, generating Survivors, which were saved by redlined Suffolk.

BEF still waiting to engage in action in Belgium. Germans brought heavy guns against Liege!

Grand Fleet bombarded minefield near Heligoland. 43 ships scored only 2 hits!

A submarine has destroyed floating mine.

Italy, Week 35, 1914

British money allowed Italy to rush her 3rd Corps. Duke Aosta has arrived to Venice and wanted to attack lonely Tirol Fortress, but prudence suggested otherwise. So Italians desided to fortify Venice instead.

Italian King sent a Gracias note for the Oil supplies from dear France. :king:

Week 35, 1914

Ottoman Empire

No action to report...

Austria-Hungary

Isonzo Front

All is quiet here. The guns are silent in this sector.

Rumania

Fighting continues as small unit action continues at the borders.

Germany

Western Front

The Nancy Campaign continues to claim more lives as this never ending battle rages on. Three German armies attack French trench outside of Nancy after preparatory artillery bombardment. 5xFrench Rifle A are destroyed along with 1xFrench Fortress Division. The Germans bring up a counterbattery gun against Nancy only to lose it in a vicious artillery duel with a French 155mm Gun. German Zeppelin destroys a building in Nancy. (Flashed by too fast for me to get a look)

Memel

German Predreadnought catches suspected Russian submarine off the coast of Sweden and sinks it. More unidentified vessels are destroyed at sea by German DD Flotillas. A small naval engagement begins with the German Fleet attacking a group of 2 Russian Armored CA and 2 Russian DD Flotillas. Entire Russian group is sunk for no losses to the Germans.

Elsewhere German army and rifle units attack Liege killing two of the defenders there. (1xSpecial Fortress, 1xBelgian Infantry)

Oh no, I think my veteran British sub in Baltic was sunk this turn! And I did not report on purpose that it sunk old German battleship last turn in hopes to keep my mission secret. I hoped to get my first Elite naval unit so that Brits could build Room 40 Wonder (+1 move for ships...)

1 German A Inf Division sneaks across the border at Lodz. Artillery in the town shell it for 2 HPs. Then, an over-anxious Machine gun post tries to slow it down, to their doom. 1 of them died, and the other was taken captive as a German Worker. AND the German unit received a promotion, to boot. More Artillery fired but failed to hit. Meanwhile, the Brusilov Army disembarked at the railyard and pretty much had the A Inf unit surrounded. Brusilov's men took heavy casualties, but bested the Germans. Now that Machine Gunner is a Russian Worker. :)

Artillery in Nancy shells the Hindenburg. 1 of 3 hits for 1 HP. 2 of three 155mm hit for 1 HP each. Paris receives word that the Resistance has put forth an all out effort to sustain the Eastern Blockade. Paris calls a "FREE Wine Day" in honor of the Irish, and wonders why the niether the Neutrals nor the British are helping Liege....

Dublin was rioting last week, by the way :) It is not an Easter rebellion yet, but was very annoying indeed... (I made it so that only Belfast has reinforcement building, which helps with happiness too).

BEF was not risking to attack and get yellowlined without any city to heal in. I cannot even ship my Corps back to England, until the discovery of Convoys (space 4), since transports have space 1 (it is Div level after all!) Brits may ask French for a trench :)

Guys, can we agree to transfer one French city to Brits ? In final version I made Calais British base, but we need to do something for this game!

Tigranes said:

I would agree to that if Cyc does. I know that in reality Britain did not control any French cities during the war however the Civ3 game engine does not allow for setting up independent structures in the field such as hospitals, factories, etc. The only real way to give Britain a base would be to have one of the existing cities on the Western Front, either in Belgium or France, given to the British.

Save resent to Tigranes. I think we could agree to some sort of temporary setup. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Well, if you donate me Calais next turn for the duration of war British people will be very thankful! :)

Moff, since I have discovered very regrettable Seaplane Tender loss, with all respect to secrecy, can you just share at least general story how that unique ship got sunk?

Tigranes said:

Sorry Tigranes, I forgot to mention that incident in my battle report. I was wondering what that ship was but a quick right click on it revealed it had only a 8 defense factor. Easy kill I thought. So I sent one of my BC's with a speed of 6 which was able to reach out and sink her and still have enough movement to get back to the safety of my minefield belt. The way I spotted her was through movement 6 ships patrolling and she was sitting within range of my forces.

Britain Week 35, 1914

Battle of Mons

The Battle of Mons was the first major action of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in the First World War. It was a subsidiary action of the Battle of the Frontiers, in which the Allies clashed with Germany on the French borders. At Mons, the British army attempted to hold the line of the Mons-Condé Canal against the advancing German First Army. Although the British fought well and inflicted disproportionate casualties on the numerically-superior Germans, they were eventually forced to retreat due both to the greater strength of the Germans and the sudden retreat of the French Fifth Army, which exposed the British right flank.

BEF Headquarter, City of Mons, Belgium August 23 (well, it's really August 30ish, we one week behind compared with real WW1).

General Haig and Field Marshal Sir John French reading last French Report

F. -- General Haig!
H. -- Sir, yes Sir!
F. -- French wonder why the niether the Neutrals nor the British are helping Liege....
H. -- I beg your pardon? You mean you, Sir John French wonder WHY we sit on this hill for the 4rd turn in a row? I was the one who advised action from the very beginning!
F. -- No General! I mean French French, not me French. We cannot risk any action at the moment. Take a look at German Army sieging Liege:

mons.jpg

F. -- What can we do with 3 Corps and 2 guns? They got 16/19 Corps commanded by Falkenhayn, base defense 15 against my Corps 27/27 with base attack 11. We have no chance!
H. --Sir! We simply cannot procrastinate any further! Brave Belgians are yellowlined. Germans got Skoda Bombard 35 gun with crazy rate of fire. I am willing to bombard and attack Falkenhayn with my 27/27 Corps, and you can attack 11/17 Rupprecht. Gen. Plumer than can attack any Elite division on the top of the stack, and we retreat to Calais, which will be lended to us next turn, I hope!
F. --All right then. But you go first! It is not fit for Field Marshal to die so early in the game, I mean, War!

And so starts the very first battle for BEF. Counterbattery artillery kills monster Siege Gun. Armored car and light gun score 2 hits on Falkenhayn (14/19 now). Brave Haig gets yellowlined but defeats Germans. What a victory! Reluctant (27/27) French rushes on 11/17 Rupprecht. British score first hits, but gradually both Corps get yellowlined. Germans go red first, they down to 2 hit points, while English still on their last yellow dot. And then British loose point after point after point, while Germans loose none! Filed Marshal French killed in action! What a twist of luck!
Plumer Corps take care of Elite Guard Unit, no prisoners though. Indeed a glorious battle!

In Baltic British Submarine Flotila dies while attacking her second Old Battleship, even though odds favor British!

A mine gets cleared near the danish coast. 2 destroyers with Survivors arrive to London, contrubuting 2000 gold to British funds and 2000 ponts for Entante VP pifggy bank. Another abandoned Survivors from submarine attack picked near Norway.

Old coastal submarines arrive to main naval base Scapa Flow for upgrading to the regular Sea-going submarines. They still cannot go Ocean, though.

British Admiralty laments the death of Engadine, our only Seaplane carrier, which was used to scout Heligoland Bite. Apparentely I mis-clicked something, and unit was left outside of the stack of Grand Fleet, blocading Germans! :wallbash:

Italy Week 36, 1914

Duke Acosta Corps kill lonely German Reserve Division in Isonzo valley. Victorious Italian Fleet returns to Naval Base in Taranto to recuperate in 1 turn.
