New PBEM adaptation of TGW-Div 1.6: Playtesting!

Just a question -- why risk 180 shields worth CB against the artillery on the tile that will fall to the ground troops anyway? :)

Britain

Our lonely Mesopotamian gun shelled Turkish Infantry protecting the supply road to Basra. Not much can be done here, and our Palestine forces went into offensive this turn, to distract Turks from Basra.

Navy shelled infantry protecting a road in Syria.

BEF was reinforced by British volunteers and trying to outflank Metz. Given how railroads help to instantly reinforce cities under the danger the only tactic one can employ is to try to cut the city from the rest of the Empire.

British were so low on cash this turn that they reluctantly cashed 1 War Material in order to supply French with some intelligence about Trieste.

Italy

French offensive coincided with the remarkable event -- folks from liberated vineyard tile pledge allegiance to the Italian culture! What a nice timing, this game really holds some nice surprises in it vaults :D

Italian Army decides to thank French for an extra Wine by providing France with Belgian Dye! Expeditionary Forces were sent to threaten Cologne in hopes to distract Germans even more.

Italian Parliament drafted a resolution calling for unification of Trieste with Italian Kingdom. Some politicians, however, worried that French may keep the city for themselves, after so much blood they shed there.

"Tiger" Clemenceau received a secret letter from Italian King asking about French intentions about the city which means so much for Italy!

:dunno: I am used to fighting the Germans. I can't kill them. They won't leave. So the only thing I can do is bombard them with my Artillery. Normally, my CBs do the trick. But these guys were in Trenches on a Hill and I had better uses for my ground troops.

If you like, I can withdraw my troops and you can show me how the Italians do it.... :p

The French fully intended on gifting Trieste to the Italians when it is no longer needed for a toehold on this part of the Continent. We are mainly here for the lobster and wine. Well... after tasting the wine, we are here mainly for the lobster. ;)

Week 13, 1915

Ottoman Empire

Army Loxum arrives in Basra to kill a British MG after light artillery bombardment. Then a Turkish Sipahi gallops down and captures a British worker near the greater Basra area. The worker was immediately executed in revenge for all the misery the British and French fleets have put the Empire through.

Austria-Hungary

A terrible but brief fight breaks out in the Trieste area. Newly arrived Austrian counter battery guns knock out 3 French 155mm guns losing 1 Austrian counter battery gun. Three Austrian armies, one led by Conrad, attack the French trenches outside Trieste. Conrad dies while facing Joffre but not until he brings him down to 5HP. Then the second Austrian army attacks Petain. Petain is the victor but is brought down to 10HP. The last Austrian army attacks and kills a French Rifle A.

Germany

A mysterious explosion is detected near Amsterdam by a German CL. Two submarines engage the British fleet off the coast of Norway. One submarine dies while attacking a British CA but the other submarine sinks the Queen Mary BC. The only survivor was machine gunned by the German crew to prevent recapture by the Royal Navy.

German artillery shell the British outside of Metz and the French outside of Liege.

Defense of Trieste. German artillery shell the French Trenches in a follow up bombardment of the earlier Austrian attack. Two German armies and many troops are brought down. In the fighting Petain loses his life as do 2 French Rifle R and 2 French Rifle A. Counterbattery fire destroys two French 155mm guns. Germany loses 6 Rifle As in the fighting.

How do you spy on enemy cities? I can't seem to do that but it looks like Britain can?

Do you have wireless communication tech? It has old school Intelligence Agency, you build it, plant a spy and then my spy will expose your spy

The Russian forced resume maneuvers again in hopes of shelling the Germans again. The Russian countryside has returned to green instead of that dull gray.

The Nicolas Gang is back, cratering the hills 2 tiles East of Samsun.
________________________________________________

Trieste ~ What can I say? We've taken the city. It has 3 Resistors and is starving. The French are not prepared to gift the city to the Italians just yet. We need more time and anxiously look forward to some Italian reinforcements.

The battle started with three 155mm hitting R-Inf for 2HP each. Then Joffre attacked, killing one of them, but he lost too many HP to press on. A TA redlined another R-Inf. Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. R-Inf kills R-Inf. Ditto. Ditto. Ditto. R-Inf loses to R-Inf, who promoted. Frustrated, one more 155mm was sent up and shelled the valuable Austrian, redlining him. A-Inf kills an R-Inf. An A-Inf was sent in to Trieste to clear out the stubborn R-Inf, which it did, taking the city and securing it for the French. VIVA LE FRANCE!!! Trieste still has 3 Resistors hidden in it which we are trying to coax out with Austrian French wine. The city is starving and we hope to change this quickly.

Units still on the hill turn to eyeball the Austrian troops to the NE. A Counter Battery is fired, taking out an Austrian CB. In the other direction, a 2nd CB takes out a German CB.

Up North, newly recruited Resistance members fill our front line cities.

p.s. The wine is better today. :)

Britain

News of the capture of Trieste galvanized British. Liege, Gaza, Trieste -- this glorious list will grow :goodjob:! Not counting Lodz and AI cities Centrals have really nothing to boast about and we didn't fight for the full year yet! The lesson from the French success is that BEF needs some big guns if it wonna be successful against citadels like Metz. Unfortunately Lord Fisher is pushing British research toward Battlecruiser and Queen Elisabeth type of Super Dreadnought with Lethal naval bombardment, but King personally promised Lord Kitchener, that Field Howitzers will be the next British Tech!

Our mission in Iraq risks to become a total disaster now when Turks have 4 Corps. British sent a special envoy to Russia asking for some Cossack activity in Western Armenia and/or Romania supported by Nicolas Gang. Lets distract those Ottomans and Bulgarians. Armored Car was trying to avenge the death of our Workers in Mesopotamian swamps, but Turkish Sipahi flew away even deeper into Kuwait itself!

British troops reached the outskirts of Jerusalem. What a glorious sight! The Holy City is just 1 tile north from the hill our soldiers are standing now. Shelling did very little to the defenders. We have too few troops to attack the city and our planes fail to hit anything, not even a road!

BC Inflexible proves to be inflexible about Turkish DD ventured her way SW off Cyprus. Turkish ship was already yellow, we wonder what she was doing before? Turks were sunk with all hands lost.

Back in the Northern Sea British DD did what DDs are supposed to be doing -- sunk German sub near the coast of Denmark. Lots of anti-submarine zigzagging was involved in guessing the location of the invisible sub. The battle lasted longer than usual so we hope that we sunk Ocean going Mittle U type sub, produced in Kiel by Submarine Yards every 4 turns. After Germany researches 1917 tech she can actually build submarine yards in every port in ADDITION to building Mittle U subs by the regular shields. So Atlantic can be threatened by unrestricted submarine warfare. But until then we will just enjoy enforcing naval blockade: not a single German blockade runner risked to leave the overseas ports as far as we can tell.

British CL Cassandra destroyed a railroad north off Memel.

BEF blockaded Metz from 3 sides and ...

Italy

... and Italy sent her boys to press on Metz from the forth side! Never before Entente was presented in such a glorious unity as here, near the city of Metz, which bears a special significance for the French! Just our way to say thanks for the liberation of Trieste!

P.S. Both Britain and Italy recieved wuth a gratitude some unexpected financial gifts from Russia and France. We wonder what we did to deserve such a kindness in the tough times like the Great War? :hatsoff:

Week 14, 1915

Ottoman Empire:

3 Arab Rebels killed in Mesopotamia. What we think was a spy was killed near Jerusalem by a Sipahi.

Austria-Hungary:

Coastal Fortress of Trieste destroyed by Austrian CL bombardment. French positions outside of Trieste bombarded by whats left of the Austrian artillery but all missed. Austrian Cavalry dies while trying to pierce the French lines. Mysterious explosion detected by Austrian DD Flotilla outside Fiume.

Germany:

Russian Rifle R and Light Artillery detected near Memel. An elite German Cavalry and a regular Landwehr division are sent to deal with the situation. Threat to German railroad lines averted with the destruction of the enemy.

On the Western Front German cavalry speed out of Metz to capture two British workers. They are immediately executed.

Trieste counter offensive begins in earnest. 4 German Armies supported by the largest amount of divisions mustered to date by Germany attack French defenses outside Trieste after preliminary artillery bombardment ends. The bloodbath ends with the destruction of the French forces. German losses are heavy with 11 Rifle Rs, 5 Rifle As, 2 Landwehrs, 1 Flamethrower, and 1MG.

The French engineer protecting a counter battery gun enjoying the Austrian wine are also silenced.

The party is over.

Oooops... What were the French losses? And how much artillery helped you here?

French losses were: 3 Trench Mortars, 2 Colonial troops, 19 Rifle R, 1 Rifle A, 2 Counter battery, 5 155mm, 1 Infantry T, and 1 MG.

I had all my trench mortars brought over from the abandoned Warsaw offensive, plus a stash of 210s I still had left. ;)

:crazyeye:

34 units! Mind boggling! I wonder if anyone even alive in France right now... If one has barbed wired trench on the hill that means defenders enjoys +150% (50+50+50)bonus, and it is still not enough for static warfare!. Should I increase trench bonus by 25%? It is 50% right now, and barbed wire always double whatever trench has...

I agree with Tigranes. Not a detailed Battle Report at all. But if that's the way you want to play...

At Kaunas 2 LA fail to hit the Landwehr Division. The 3rd thru 7th each take 1HP from it and a Cossack finishes it off.

The Russians have crossed the 10,000 point mark.
_____________________________________________

At Nancy, 155mm shell Cavalry in Forset for 3HP, The 2nd takes 1HP. R-Inf kills it and promotes.

Hearing about the monsterous-sized German Force in the hills, The troops in Trieste dig in and prepare for the worst. Party over? I should think not. It is the Germans who are standing in the snow and mud, burying their dead, waiting to kill again. Cheers!

Guys, I guess what I really meant is that I am in favor of middle ground in reporting. It is impossible to describe every single move that enemy could see if he would watch you in real time setting. So general description, like troops got yellowlined are just fine, without tracking every single hitpoint. On the other hand I was just wondering what was French losses and I am thankful to Moff for that additional info :) We wonna keep this fun and reasonable, don't we? :king:

Tigranes said:

I disagree. It is already hard enough to kill units as it is. If we remove artillery from the game, for example, and rely only on pure ground combat then the defender will probably win most of the time. I lost an elite Rifle R to a 2/5HP Veteran French Rifle R last night.

Cyc said:

I know what you mean Cyc. It's easy to provide detailed reports for the small battles, but for the large ones it takes a lot of time. I'll have to figure out a system for recording the results without it becoming too much of a chore.

Tigranes said:

Of course, always! :)

The problem I'm facing is a time constraint. Big battles take about an hour or so to setup and execute. Last night I was pushed for time as usual. I'll try to provide better battle reports in the future.

Britain

3 British A Div near Jerusalem went over the top this week, and two of them got promoted to veterans for killing Turks! Unfortunately the third one was annihilated by the Ottoman snipers.

British BCs shelled Beyrut-Haifa road.

BEF was tightening the grip on Metz.

Italy

Italian guns destroyed Walls and Bomb Shellters in Metz. Newly formed Trieste Corps destroyed nearby rails. But the rest of the Italians got puzzled with the lack of French counter attack to releave Trieste and returned to Belgium to return back to Italy next turn. If Trieste falls to Germany this turn nothing will stop Germans from attacking Venice itself!

Austrian fleet was shelled in Ragusa yellowlining semi drednought.

Week 15, 1915

Ottoman Empire:

2 Arab Rebels killed in Mesopotamia and they keep on coming! Russian Cossack detected in the Kut region dangerously close to one of our workers. Army Group sent in to eliminate the threat. Another Turkish army defeats a British Rifle A near Jerusalem.

Austria-Hungary:

Austrian forces sent to the Western Front to bolster the defenses. Artillery shells British positions between Metz and the rest of Germany doing some light damage. Then one of Austria's armies attack and kill a British Rifle A. Then Austrian counter battery fire destroys 2 British counter battery guns in another position near Metz.

Germany:

Germany brings it's artillery from the Trieste front to Metz and shells the British position that was attacked by the Austrians earlier. All defenders are redlined with the exception of two. Two German armies defeat two British Rifle A troops. Then infantry takes care of the rest of the troops killing 5 Rifle Rs, 1 Indian Division, and 1 Canada Division. Corridor now restored to Metz where additional forces are brought in to help defend.

Two msyterious explosions detected near Amsterdam by patrolling German DD Flotillas.

Nothing of any importance happened in Russia this week.

@ Metz - A 155mm fires into Metz and takes 2HPs from an MG.

@Trieste - A 155 fires at the amassed Germans in the Barbed Wire Trenched Hills. It takes 1 HP awat from an A-Inf, The 2nd 155mm Fails.

gps to Tigranes.

Britain

British War Cabinet reevaluating the situation on fronts: things do not look good at all. Central powers crossed the 200,000 (50%) barrier in their Victory Points for killing so many units, mostly. The game maybe over by the end of 1915 if we continue to loose units by such a rate! Perhaps when we get close to that we could boost required points to 1 mil. point to continue until the 11th hours of 11th day of 11month of 1918, but lets live and see...

British engineers observed how Belgian culture beats Metz culture for the tile with rubber, so our two engineers finish a road in one turn. This will allow Belgian cities to build units again!

BEF goes into action this turn. British guns shell Admiral Horthy's Hungarian Corps down to 6/13 HPs. Then General Freyberg finally creates Corps and attacks. Hungarians were down to 1 HP and knocked 5(!) HPs from British Corps 5 times in a row! Our boys prevailed anyway and were sent back to France to recuperate. Then 3 remaining counterbattery guns attacked Hungarians killing 2 CBs (one Elite!) and loosing 1 gun battery to the enemy fire.

In Judea our forces retire from Jerusalem.

Italy

Chaotic withdrawal of French forces from Isonzo theatre combined with the road building delays of French engineers near Metz created very confusing situation. Italians cannot go back to Italy, because French observation balloon counts as a unit and blocks the way even when no other French unit is there! The best way home will be from the Trench kept safe from Belgians, so urgen request was sent to Paris from Italian prime minister: "Lascia andare il mio popolo" (let my people go) ;)

Regia Marina shelled German invaders east off Venice. No other activity undertaken...

The room is large and reeks of polished oak and leather. The large, but heavily curtained windows let French sunlight in on a man pacing back and forth, furiously trying to make what is not into something that is. This man, who speaks not a lick of Italian, is the French Military Attache to the Foriegn Minister's Office, Inspector General Clouseau. He has been holding an urgent message from the Italian Prime Minister for a frantic 15 minutes, trying to decipher it's meaning....

"Let'zee, I have tried everything elze zo far..." he looks at the message again, shaking it slightly and hoping the letters fall into proper place, "How about - 'I was pulled under in my waterpolo game' - maybe?" He shakes his head with a lot more force than he did the message. He now holds it with both hands, tilts it one way and then the other. Moves his head closer to it trying to force his lips to speak Italian. "Hmmm. Maybe -'Lastly, and they are ill of my poopoo' - nnno! Thet cannot be it." He walks quickly to the large wooden doors, opens one and yells "Where's thet confounded translator..."
