So I'm considering buying the following laptop:

Asus M50A1
Intel core duo 2.26Ghz processor
4GB SDRAM
NVidia 9600M GS 1GB video card
Vista home premium

There's a wide range of answers on various forums as to whether Civ IV BTS will run properly on Vista. Some seem to have real problems, others none.

Can anyone please let me know if this system/OS will run BTS properly?

Would getting Complete make any difference?

it should
one thing that you need to make sure is to install the game and all patches with admin rights (i.e. right click on the installer and choose run as administrator - do not assume admin rights because you are using an admin account).

Thanks. I noticed the specs for new Civ IV Complete says it's fully compatible with Vista.

Assuming that resolves all the issues I've been reading about?

BtS and Colonization are marketed as "Games for Windows" - which means that the publisher claims (and proves to Microsoft) that the game is fully Vista compatible. The problem is that Civ4 up to 1.61 is not strictly Vista compatible and only the 1.74 patch solves most problems. This has led to quite a lot of problems for people since the patching process is not implemented in a good manner.
That said - the complete editions (both the European version that comes without Colonization and the US version that comes with Colonization) come fully patched for the base game so that this problem is solved. Also one problem in Vista is that a lot of problems are caused by the Safedisk feature that checks for the original game in the cd drive. This requires working Drive firmware and many vendors have not bothered to update their firmware to Vista. This problem is solved in the US complete edition by removing the safedisk check (it is still present in the European complete edition).

In short:
There should be no problems running Complete on Vista.
