The world is not enough
I had forgotten that the HG gives the city it's built in extra happinness compared to other cities as GaryNemo pointed out. This would give us republic-like trade in Doug so I've changed my mind - we should aim for both HG and Col in Doug. This is a little more difficult since Neu has accumuluated more shields and could RB a wonder now.
So I think we should send a van or two into Doug and then rush buy the HG and start colossus. Keeping cash reserves in case the AI starts these wonders is probably a good idea (once one of the AI civs finishes the pyramids the others will switch to HG, Col or MPE). This in turn means that at the moment we'll have to be very careful about rush buying, probably only temple in EF, trireme in LC plus some vans and needless to say, wonders. And let's not forget that if the AI is about to finish a wonder we really want we might be able to sell temples to finish ahead of the AI (the temples temporarily become less important once we get the HG).
I think having every city well defended is too expensive at this stage (the core cities are already OK militarily), also the AI is too stupid to send loads of tiremes with elephants towards us. Also the AI usually doesn't declare war without warning, it will start by demanding something, e.g. a tech and we'll simply swallow our pride and give the AI what it demands in exchange for a treaty. We can always demand tribute later. Also the AI judges our strength by the number of military units we have, not type of units so in that respect having two warriors is better than having one stealth fighter
.
However, I admit that our eastern defenses "are as thin as parchment" and really need some work.
Maybe we should increase taxes to maximum for a few turns (maybe 5 or so) to get more cash for rush buying units, caravans, city improvements and wonders ?
